Zabariah assumes duties as Court of Appeal president

By: Bernama Text Size: PUTRAJAYA: Federal Court Judge Datuk Zabariah Mohd Yusof ( pic ) will assume the powers and responsibilities of the Court of Appeal president following Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim's retirement yesterday. In a letter dated yesterday, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, who is assuming the powers and duties of the Chief Justice, said Zabariah's appointment, effective yesterday, is made under Section 9 (3) (a) of the Court of Judicature Act 1964.
Advertisement According to the letter, she is to exercise the powers and duties of the Court of Appeal president until the position is permanently filled. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Sebli, Federal Court Chief Registrar Datuk Zamri Bakar and Court of Appeal Registrar Jumirah Marjuki. Zabariah was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner and later served at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on January 5, 2009. She was confirmed as a High Court judge on Aug 9, 2010, and on Jan 2, 2013, was assigned to the Seremban High Court. In 2016, she returned to serve as a High Court judge at the Kuala Lumpur High Court. Zabariah was appointed as a Court of Appeal Judge on March 21, 2016, and as a Federal Court judge on Dec 5, 2019. She turned 66 last April 10, but was given a six-month extension. In March, Zabariah was appointed as a member of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC). Malaysia seeks solution after 25pct US tariff on exports
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia remains committed to resolving outstanding trade issues with the United States following the imposition of a 25 per cent tariff on Malaysian exports. The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) said it is in active discussions with US counterparts to clarify the scope and implications of the tariff, and to work toward a timely, mutually beneficial resolution. It added that these ongoing efforts reflect Malaysia's commitment to achieving a fair and sustainable outcome for both sides. "While we acknowledge the concerns raised by the US regarding trade imbalances and market access, we believe that constructive engagement and dialogue remain the best path forward," MITI said in a statement. The US is Malaysia's second largest trading partner and largest export destination, with total trade in 2024 rising nearly 30 per cent to RM324.9 billion (US$71.4 billion). Exports to the US reached RM198.7 billion (US$43.7 billion), while imports rose to RM126.3 billion (US$27.7 billion). MITI said Malaysia views unilateral measures as potentially disruptive to business operations, supply chains, and investment flows that benefit both countries. It said the country strongly believes that mutually acceptable solutions will safeguard the interests of both countries, while ensuring that bilateral trade and investment remain a positive force for sustainable economic development. "The government of Malaysia remains committed to protecting the interests of Malaysian businesses, workers and consumers. It will take all necessary steps to mitigate the impact of these new measures," it added.

The move, detailed in a letter to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, marks a sharp escalation in US-Malaysia trade relations. Trump cited Malaysia's 'Tariff, and Non Tariff, Policies and Trade Barriers' as the basis for the decision. The president claimed the US has suffered 'many years' of unsustainable trade deficits with Malaysia. He described the imbalance as a threat to both the US economy and national security. Trump further expressed disappointment over the lack of reciprocity in the bilateral trading relationship. 'Our relationship has been, unfortunately, far from Reciprocal,' he wrote in the letter dated July 7. He added that goods transshipped to avoid the tariff would still face the highest applicable rate. Trump suggested that Malaysia could avoid the new tariff by encouraging companies to manufacture in the US. 'There will be no Tariff if Malaysia, or companies within your Country, decide to build or manufacture product within the United States,' he wrote. The letter left open the possibility of further tariff hikes if Malaysia raised its own trade barriers. Trump said any increase in Malaysian tariffs would be matched by equivalent US tariff additions. The letter appeared to blend formal diplomacy with campaign-style rhetoric aimed at domestic audiences. Anwar praises Brazil visit success in boosting ties and cooperation
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has declared his visit to Rio de Janeiro for the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit a major success in enhancing bilateral relations and expanding Malaysia's global strategic cooperation. In a Facebook post, the Prime Minister stated that the trip met its key goals, reinforcing ties not only with Brazil but also with other BRICS nations. Anwar emphasised Malaysia's growing reputation among international investors, crediting the MADANI Government's dedication to attracting high-quality investments that drive economic growth. 'Malaysia's name continues to be on the lips of international investors as a result of the unwavering commitment of the entire MADANI Government team,' he said. He urged the public to remain focused on progress, dismissing negative voices that undermine these efforts. 'Our journey is far from over, and we will continue to forge ahead with determination and commitment to bring real change to the country and future generations,' Anwar added. The Prime Minister thanked all involved in the mission's success, including ministry officials, the Malaysian Embassy in Brazil, security personnel, and media representatives.
