‘Aspirational in the silliest sense': why The Lizzie McGuire Movie is my feelgood movie

The Guardian21-04-2025
Three years ago, my fiance and I were winding through the narrow streets of Seville when he began a sentence with the words: 'Imagine if.' Imagine if, he pondered, you went to a foreign country and it turned out that you looked exactly like one of their local celebs. People would approach you for autographs … they would scream at you on the street … you wouldn't know what was going on. I stopped still and gawped at him. 'That's the plot of The Lizzie McGuire Movie,' I said. And that's when I found out that the man I was going to marry had never seen the greatest film of all time.
Movies with the word 'movie' in the title are not usually considered the world's best and yes, officially The Lizzie McGuire Movie is a flop, with a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But the coming-of-age comedy was released in 2003, at a time when critics were allowed to hate teenage girls a little more openly than they're allowed to hate teenage girls today. That might be 'irrelevant' because the 'experts' were 'technically correct' in noting that the movie is not a masterpiece, but I believe it is at least a masterpiece of the genre. By which I mean: at one point, an Italian woman manhandles Hilary Duff before handing her a giant wheel of cheese.
The Lizzie McGuire Movie is a spin-off of the Disney channel show of basically the same name. Our lovable hero, Lizzie (Duff), graduates middle school and goes on a trip to Rome with her classmates. When she gets there, she realises – via gifted cheese – that she is the spitting image of the Italian pop star Isabella Parigi (who – hold onto your jaws as I say this – is also played by Duff). Hijinks ensue.
In short: Isabella's singing partner Paolo Valisari whizzes Lizzie around on his moped and subjects her to a makeover montage. Why? Because he wants Lizzie to perform as Isabella, who has left Italy, at the International Music Video Awards. Are his motivations nefarious? You bet they are! But the only way for Lizzie to discover this is by donning a sparkly lilac top with a square inexplicably cut out around her belly button.
Nostalgia clouds the mind but I do think this movie is genuinely funny – Alex Borstein as school trip wrangler Miss Ungermeyer is a particular highlight ('Put your money in your front pockets,' she warns the kids after catching sight of slick pop star Paolo). While the film is undeniably a trite tableau of teen movie cliches, it avoids the harshest and grossest ones that were popular at the time. No one is mocked for having an eating disorder or stalked oh-so-romantically. It is aspirational in the silliest sense – while other movies might've inspired you to flirt like this or dance like that, nothing in The Lizzie McGuire Movie could be copied: you're either in danger of being mistaken for an Italian pop star or you're not. This means it didn't make 11-year-old me feel bad about herself, and it still makes adult me feel good.
I often think about the overlap in 'boy' and 'girl' culture. A young teenage girl will consume – or at least try out – the same stuff as a teenage boy, because of the value society affords anything masculine (and because we wanted boys to kiss us). As a teen girl, I watched Fight Club and played Fifa, but how many straight boys read The Princess Diaries or watched Lizzie McGuire? There are huge gaping holes in men's cultural knowledge: most have never seen a Duff-Duff duet in the Colosseum, one Duff in purple, the other in green, both singing the words 'hey, now' a total of 23 times.
I couldn't marry a man who had never heard the lyrics 'Hey, now, hey, now, this is what dreams are made of', so I left my fiance at the altar three months after our trip to Seville. I'm kidding, of course – but naturally I did force him to watch the film before we married, and unbeknownst to me he even slipped a reference to it into our vows. In front of who else but Italian civil officials, my husband promised to watch the film with me at least once a year. It was a light aside in vows that were otherwise (I swear, I swear) deeply meaningful, but I'm still going to hold him to that promise – until death do us hey, now.

Loris Karius lifts lid on relationship with Diletta Leotta after she revealed moment he locked himself in her room

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) LORIS KARIUS has spilled the beans on his glam romance with TV stunner Diletta Leotta. The ex-Liverpool goalkeeper explained the difficulties of living miles apart from his wife and how he's able to make up for his absence. The pair first met in 2022, welcomed baby Aria in 2023 and tied the knot in a plush 2024 bash straight out of a fairy tale. But it's not all roses and romance, they're juggling marriage and parenthood from different countries. Karius now plays for German Bundesliga two side Schalke after leaving Newcastle while Diletta's continues her DAZN gig in Milan. But according to the goalkeeper his wife loves it and creates an atmoshphere where its right for them to feel the love even from a distance. He told Sport Bild: 'Diletta even advised me to extend at Schalke. "She thinks the club is great and she likes everything she has seen here so far. "Diletta also thinks that royal blue is the perfect choice for my sporting success. She is fully behind this decision." He added: 'But of course it's hard for me when I can't see my little daughter Aria for days. The 32-year-old goalkeeper also admitted he's open to a second child even though he's not planned anything yet. He added: "We would love to have a second child, we don't know when yet and nothing concrete is planned so far." The goalie also revealed that his missus is the real celeb in the family – especially in Milan. He added: 'She gets recognised more than me. She's a superstar over there.' But Karius wasn't quite ready for the full Italian family welcome. On meeting Diletta's clan in noisy Sicily, he fled the lunch table and locked himself in the bedroom for a lie-down. His wife Dilette revealed on a podcast: 'He was shattered by life, bless him. 'He said, Please stop, I need a break. "He went upstairs to his room locked himself in and threw himself on the bed destroyed by life." Since his Liverpool nightmare, Karius has done the rounds – Besiktas, Union Berlin, Newcastle and now Schalke in Germany's second tier, where he just signed a deal until 2027. 11 Diletta Leotta is one of DAZN top footie presenters Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta 11 She was in the U.S working during the just ended Club World Cup Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta 11 Every now and then she'd drop a stunning photo on her Instagram page for her followers Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta 11 The presenter first met Karious in 2022 and now they have a daughter Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta 11 Diletta admits Karius couldn't handle meeting her family for the first time Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta 11 She's happy to stay in Milan while her husband stays in Gelsenkirchen playing for Schalke Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta 11 Italian television presenter and model, married to German professional footballer Loris Karius Credit: Instagram / @dilettaleotta

Headteacher celebrates 'rollercoaster' 15 years at school

PUPILS at a Powys primary school have thrown their departing headteacher a special rollercoaster-themed farewell, to honour his love of theme parks. Adam Shearman has been the headteacher of Llanelwedd Church in Wales Primary School, near Builth Wells, for 15 years, but is heading to another school in the county in September. Llanelwedd deputy head Satu Haikala said staff and pupils 'brought Disneyworld to Llanelwedd' as a way of giving Mr Shearman a fitting send-off at the end of term. Members of staff planned a special surprise to honour Mr Shearman's love of theme parks with a surprise roller coaster ride around the school grounds. The playground was decorated as a theme park and a special cart had been designed as a 'rollercoaster', where children in Year 6 pushed Mr Shearman through specially decorated theme lands that included references to his favourite theme parks; as well as to the other schools that he has supported over the last 15 years. All the pupils wore Disney-themed outfits and lined up in rows for Mr Shearman to be pushed through. They waved, cheered, threw streamers and joined in the fun. Mr Shearman had no idea that staff and pupils had conspired to organise the leaving party. 'I didn't have a clue,' he said. 'Bearing in mind we have 113 children, not one of them said a word. They knew it was a secret. 'When I walked into school I was met by our deputy headteacher, dressed as one of Snow White's dwarves. 'I then walked into assembly to see the whole school dressed as Disney characters. The staff were dressed as Snow White and her dwarves.' Another teacher, Paul Walby, who is also leaving this term, was dressed as Snow White herself. Ms Haikala, the school's deputy head, said: 'We had a collection and didn't make enough to send Mr Shearman to Disneyworld, so we brought Disneyworld to Llanelwedd.' The children also sang songs from their recent production of the Wizard of Oz. Mr Shearman joined the school in 2010, when it had just 43 children; he now leaves the school with 94 pupils, with a further 19 in the school-based pre-school setting. On the school's Facebook page he said: 'I find myself reflecting on the journey we've shared. 'Llanelwedd school has never been just a place of learning, it has been a living, breathing community where curiosity is encouraged, resilience is built and compassion is celebrated. 'Together, we've weathered challenges (and flooding), embraced change and created a culture that values both academic achievements and empathy. 'Over the years the school has grown and developed, but at its heart is the children. The children at Llanelwedd are like family.' The was described as 'thriving' by Church in Wales inspectors who visited just before Easter. 'The true legacy of a school lies not in its buildings or measured by the awards it wins but is in the hearts and minds of those who pass through its doors,' added Mr Shearman. 'As I move on to new adventures, I leave with immense pride and unwavering hope for the future of this remarkable school. 'I know the school is in very safe hands with the new headteacher, Ms Haikala, and the wonderful staff team here. 'I would like to thank the whole school community for their support, good wishes and contributions. It has truly been an honour to serve as the headteacher of this very special place.'

Nostalgic 90s sequel that 'ruined my Friday night' soars to number 1 on Netflix

To no one's surprise, the highly anticipated sequel to an Adam Sandler movie comedy – coming 29 years after the original – has soared straight to number one on Netflix upon its release. As part of Sandler's mega deal with the streamer, reportedly worth $250million (£186m) and renewed multiple times, he has re-visited popular territory with Happy Gilmore 2. The 1996 film followed the titular character, played by Sandler, a failed ice hockey player trying to raise enough money to stop the foreclosure of his grandmother's house, who fortuitously discovers he can hit long shots in golf and gains a fan following. But just as the former Saturday Night Live actor has often split opinion, among the rave reviews from die-hard fans are many decrying the quality of this new 'zero-star' sequel, branding it 'tripe' and 'a terrible waste of time'. Jaja B even admitted in their reaction on Rotten Tomatoes: 'I think this is my last/final break-up with a once great Adam Sandler.' In the follow-up film, a terrible stroke of bad luck puts golf's one-time bad boy back on the back foot and in desperate need of a comeback – which is offered to him by Maxi Energy Drink CEO Frank Manatee (Benny Safdie), who is sponsoring a new golfing league of which he wants Happy to be the star. It was cameo central and cheap, no effort jokes. Don't meet your heroes,' wrote Sean M in his reaction on the review aggregator site. Stephen M agreed, calling it 'pointless' and 'awful', although it does currently hold a fresh 74% audience rating at the time of publication. 'Sandler is rinsing that Netflix money and producing tripe. No funny moments at all. Happy Gilmore was great, but this one is the worst movie I've watched,' he complained. 'The movie left a sour taste in my mouth [and] was a terrible waste of time,' added Austin C while Rog S moaned: 'This movie was a flaming pile of garbage.' Another fan echoed these thoughts, branding Happy Gilmore 2 'by far the worst Adam Sandler movie ever produced', despite calling the star 'one of my all-time faves'. 'I'm shocked that so many personalities read this script and attached their names to the film. This ruined my Friday night,' they added. Happy Gilmore 2 does boast an impressive cast, welcoming back the likes of Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, original director Dennis Dugan and Ben Stiller in his previous role as Hal from both Happy Gilmore and Hubie Halloween. The movie also features pro-golfer John Daly as a fictionalised version of himself, and multiple members of Sandler's immediate family, including daughter Sunny, alongside Safdie, Bad Bunny and a swathe of cameos from the likes of Haley Joel Osment, Steve Buscemi, Post Malone, Kid Cudi, Eminem, Travis Kelce, Rob Schneider and Oliver Hudson – and a whole host of professional golf stars as themselves. Other viewers had more fun with the film though and urged people not to see it as high art, but purely entertainment. 'Is this going to win Oscars? No more than the first did… It was a ride of fan service with familiar faves and call backs in nearly every scene, and it works for what it is,' insisted Marcus J, while Bailey L added: 'It is just as it intended: Stupid, yet funny as hell. The cameos alone make this movie perfect. It's just fun to watch if you give in.' 'To see Adam come back and make a movie filled with cameo appearances and pay homage to those who passed away almost brings a tear to my eye. This movie is great had me laughing the entire time and it filled me with a sense of nostalgia I haven't felt in a while,' shared Johnny G. Original Happy Gilmore cast members who died in the intervening years included Carl Weathers, who played Happy's mentor, Frances Bay, who was Grandma Gilmore, Richard Kiel and Joe Flaherty. Meanwhile Liana O described it as the 'best comedy I've seen in years' while Syah Izani K commented: 'I laughed from the beginning to the end of the movie.' 'This is just as good as the first one,' enthused Joshua C in his reaction. 'It brought back the golden age of comedy movies. I haven't even finished it, just got to Stephen Smith in it and couldn't even wait to write a review.' More Trending Which could explain the film's positive rating so far, alongside Sandler's passionate fans. Happy Gilmore 2 has received mixed to negative reactions from critics, with Empire saying it 'never ascends higher than 'hit-and-miss'' but has 'sheer goofy, golf-y geniality' in a three-star review. But The Daily Beast called it potentially 'the worst sequel of all time' and observed: 'Arguably the least inspired film in the actor's canon, if not all of movie history.' Happy Gilmore 2 is streaming exclusively on Netflix now. Got a story?
