How Gen Z are turning a $5 Kmart buy into a high fashion piece: 'Insanely smart'
The simple hair accessory is to thank for Gen Z's favourite clothing upgrade hack, and now everyone can do it too.
Fashion influencer Jess Bartol from Melbourne, has shared how to transform any basic tank top into a Kookai dupe using a three pack of Metal Heart Hair Ties ($5) from Kmart's hair aisle.
The hack gives serious Kookai Solene Top and London Top vibes - minus the hefty $90 price tag.
'Now, if you're anything like me you've been obsessed with Kookai and this style of gold buckle detail,' Jess explained in the clip.
'But they're quite expensive just for the dress itself, and I just feel like this is more of a sustainable, versatile option.'
In the now-viral video, which has clocked up nearly half a million views, the stylish creator showed how she simply loops one of the metal hair ties around the strap of her Zara tank top, instantly elevating it into a chic halter-neck look.
'I picked up these three hair ties from Kmart, they're literally $5, and this gold buckle right here is literally the same thing,' she said, holding up the pack.
'You get it, and you loop it around, and tie it like you would do a hair tie, and that's it. How easy is that?'
With zero sewing and less than two seconds of effort, the hack adds instant edge to basic tops and dresses, replicating the sleek buckle detailing Kookai is known for, and no designer label required.
'It just like elevates your basics and I love that so much,' Jess added. 'You could even add the other one on, or buy two packs because it's so cheap, and do one on each side [of your top].'
The Metal Heart Hair Ties includes two gold buckle styles and one metallic heart – giving users plenty of styling options for next to nothing.
'You can put it on anything… to get more wear out of it,' Jess says, calling it her favourite styling trick for updating her wardrobe without breaking the bank.
'Girl you're a genius. Def doing this,' wrote one fan.
'Omg watch these fly off the shelves,' another wrote.
'Girl you ARE SO GENIUSSSSS, I love the dresses too but I'm like goddamn the price.
'This is so iconic,' a third commented.
'This is insanely smart omg.'
The hack comes as more young Australians embrace sustainable, budget-savvy fashion, finding new ways to re-wear and reinvent what they already own, while still tapping into runway-inspired trends.
Kmart may have just (accidentally) created the most affordable 'it' accessory of the season.
And if the internet's reaction is anything to go by, these bargain ties won't be hanging around on shelves for long.

ITV announces Who Wants To Be A Millionaire spin-off series with Jeremy Clarkson - and it's absolutely ruthless
ITV has announced a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire spin-off series with Jeremy Clarkson - and it's absolutely ruthless. Millionaire Hot Seat will see 18 episodes in a fast-paced version of the classic show. Six players will compete against the clock and one another as they answer questions in a bid to win a big cash prize. It will be presented by former Top Gear star Jeremy Clarkson, who has fronted the original show since 2018. The format of the new game sees contestants queue for the Hot Seat where one person at a time will face Jeremy. They then have to answer question on the Million Pound Money Ladder. Millionaire Hot Seat will see 18 episodes in a fast-paced version of the classic show. Pictured: Jeremy on a previous episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire Only correct answers allow the players to climb up the ladder and a wrong answer will kick them out of the game, and decrease the top prize. If a participant passes, they remain in the game and go to the back of the line for the Hot Seat, but in a ruthless twist they aren't promised another turn. The passed question is then given to the next player who must answer it correctly to stay. In another savage twist, only the top prize left on the ladder can be won and the player taking on the question has to get it right to take it home. Millionaire Hot Seat is set to hit UK screens in 2026, with filming beginning this November. It has already proved to be a hit in Australia with over 2,500 episodes aired. ITV has also commissioned a 19 more episodes of the classic show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, including seven celebrity specials. ITV boss Katie Rawcliffe said: 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has reached 18 million viewers on ITV so far this year alone. 'Commissioning a new spin off format to further capitalise on the brand's success and popularity was a no brainer, especially with Millionaire Hot Seat already doing so well in other territories also.' While Matthew Worthy, co-CEO of Stellify Media, the company producing the show, added: 'It is an honour to produce Millionaire for ITV. 'Millionaire Hot Seat is the main show's cheeky younger sibling, and gives us more Jeremy, enjoying more money-ladder moments - but with a whole new tone, pace, and feel.'

Inside nepo babies Sunday Rose Urban and Sam Rechner's cute friendship: Nicole Kidman's daughter and Peter Overton's nephew share sweet holiday photos - and the adorable nickname they use
Australia's very own nepo babies Sunday Rose Urban and Sam Rechner have gone public with their very sweet friendship on social media. The daughter of Hollywood heavyweight Nicole Kidman and the nephew of Nine's Peter Overton are the closest of pals, enjoying holidays together and even having adorable nicknames for each other. Sam, 23, posted a slew of cute photos of Sunday to Instagram on Wednesday to celebrate her 17th birthday, while also revealing his pet name for the famous youngster. 'Happy Birthday ciao ciao mui mui,' he captioned the post, which showed the pair throwing peace signs in a film photo. Another picture taken by Sam showed Sunday looking radiant in a rose-covered frock as she stared down the camera. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Hire @samrechnerrr as a photographer,' she captioned the post. Other photos showed the pals enjoying a summer vacation together, with Sunday sunbathing waterside while wearing a hat over her face. While it is not known how long the two have been mates, they seem to be family friends, with Sunday's mum Nicole Kidman and Sam's uncle Peter Overton living next door to each other while growing up. What's more, Peter's sister aka Sam's mum Annette was said to be best friends with Nicole when they all attended Lane Cove Public School in Longueville together. The families are so close that Nicole asked Sam to accompany her on the Oscars red carpet in 2023, along with her husband Keith Urban. Sam is best known for his work on the screen, playing the role of Logan Hall in The Fabelmans, directed by Steven Spielberg. Sunday on the other hand has become a regular in the modelling world, appearing in campaigns for major brands such as Omega and Miu Miu - perhaps the origins of Sam's nickname for her. Despite scoring many modelling gigs lately, Sunday was initially roasted online last year over her runway debut at Paris Fashion Week. In October, she opened the Miu Miu Paris Womenswear Spring-Summer 2025 show, which was attended by the likes of Willem Dafoe and Hillary Swank. Sunday strutted in a white sleeveless dress - the same one from the campaign image - paired with grey leg-warmers and black peep-toe heels. While her mum Nicole showed her support both at the show and following her runway debut, many critics on the internet hit out at Sunday Rose's walk. Some people suggested she take runway lessons, while others simply complained that too many nepo babies think they can model. Sunday Rose's serious stomp quickly went viral on TikTok, with commenters calling her out and suggesting she find another career path. 'Try painting or acting instead. This is not for her,' one suggested, as another commenter agreed, 'Oh please why be a model so many other things to do.' 'I can hear the heels slapping the floor,' another person critiqued.
