Regular exercise and eating a plant-based diet may also help prevent Alzheimer's disease.When it comes to protecting your brain health, what you do in the evening matters more than you might think. While you can't change risk factors like age or genetics, everyday habits can chip away at your brain's defenses or help strengthen them. Research shows that certain dietary choices and poor sleep may play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease.
The good news? A few simple changes to your evening routine can make an impactful difference. Some nighttime habits, like drinking sugar-sweetened beverages and consuming heavy meals, can disrupt sleep, increase inflammation and contribute to cognitive decline over time. Here's what experts recommend leaving out of your nightly routine to help lower your risk of Alzheimer's and support brain health.
If you typically reach for a sweet tea or soda with dinner, it's worth reconsidering, especially if you want to support your brain health. 'Curbing sugary drinks in general, regardless of the time of day, is important for brain health and so much more,' says Sheri Gaw, RDN, CDCES. Gaw cites a study that found a considerably higher risk of dementia in participants who consumed seven servings of sugar-sweetened beverages per week. Excess added sugars have been linked to increased inflammation, insulin resistance and oxidative stress, all of which can negatively affect the brain over time.
Instead of reaching for a sugary beverage, consider winding down with a glass of kefir. Along with being an excellent source of probiotics and protein, recent research suggests that drinking kefir may be beneficial for slowing Alzheimer's disease.
Your nightly glass of wine could be interfering with one of the most important factors for brain health: sleep. 'Quality sleep is crucial to mental health and cognitive function, and drinking alcohol before bed can disrupt sleep quality,' explains Gaw.
Alcohol interferes with the release of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Even small amounts of alcohol in the evening can fragment sleep cycles, reduce restorative deep sleep and lead to frequent nighttime awakenings.,
To support better sleep and long-term brain health, consider swapping that evening cocktail for a calming, alcohol-free alternative. Herbal teas like chamomile, rooibos and lavender can promote relaxation without disrupting sleep. And if you do choose to drink alcohol, limit how much you drink—no more than two drinks for men, one drink for women.
Drinking caffeine too late in the day could prevent you from getting the sleep you need. 'Experts recommend at least seven to nine hours of sleep per night for brain health. Large doses of caffeine closer to bedtime impact sleep duration and quality,' says Gaw. 'Research shows that it's best to avoid coffee at least eight hours before bedtime, and steer clear of highly caffeinated pre-workout supplements at least 13 hours before sleep.'
Since sleep plays a critical role in clearing waste products from the brain, including beta-amyloid proteins linked to Alzheimer's disease, protecting your rest is one of the simplest ways to support long-term cognitive health. If you're craving something warm in the evening, consider a caffeine-free herbal tea to help you ease into a restful night.
'High sodium intake has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, with research suggesting that excess sodium can trigger inflammation, reduce blood flow to the brain and damage blood vessels,', says Sheila Patterson, RD, CDCES. It may also lower levels of nitric oxide, a compound that helps relax blood vessels and support healthy circulation. To cut back, be mindful of sodium-packed foods, like canned soups, frozen meals, processed snacks or takeout. Instead, opt for whole, minimally processed options, and season meals with fresh herbs, citrus and salt-free spice blends to keep flavor high and sodium low.
While dark chocolate is usually considered a healthy option, consuming it after 5 p.m. may hinder your ability to get the quality sleep you need. 'Dark chocolate is a sneaky source of caffeine and theobromine, two stimulants that can sabotage your sleep,' says Katharine Rosenthal, RD, LD. 'And poor sleep isn't just exhausting, it's one of the biggest long-term risk factors for cognitive decline.' Instead of reaching for dark chocolate after dinner, choose options that promote better sleep. To support better sleep and brain health, aim to finish your last substantial meal at least two to three hours before going to bed. In the evening, opt for lighter, balanced options. The best choices offer fiber, healthy fats and protein to help keep you satisfied without weighing you down.
Eat more . 'Antioxidant-rich foods play a crucial role in promoting healthy aging and maintaining cognitive function by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation—two factors linked to age-related diseases like Alzheimer's,' says Lindsay Fencl, RD, CD. 'Add more berries, walnuts and dark leafy greens to your diet,' she recommends.
Eat a plant-forward diet. Consume a low-sodium, well-balanced and colorful diet, such as the MIND diet. 'The MIND diet (a combination of the Mediterranean and the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets) supports brain function with a focus on berries, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fish, beans and leafy greens,' says Gaw. Not sure where to start?
Supplement with creatine. Numerous studies conducted over the past decade suggest that creatine supplementation can significantly enhance memory, attention and processing speed. 'A recent study in Alzheimer's patients found that supplementing with 20 grams of creatine was associated with improvements in cognition,' says Fencl. While these results are promising, the study was small, and more research is needed.
Move your body often. Studies show that exercise may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease. If exercise isn't currently part of your routine, start where you're at. Find something you enjoy and can stick to. Whether it's walking, bicycling or yoga, all movement is worthwhile.
The best way to support brain health and help prevent Alzheimer's disease is through healthy, sustainable habits. To help lower your long-term risk of cognitive decline, skip the nightly sugar-sweetened beverages, evening alcohol, excess caffeine intake and heavy meals. Instead, focus on a plant-forward, antioxidant-rich diet, like the MIND diet, and regular exercise. You don't have to overhaul your current lifestyle habits completely. Small changes can lead to big results over time.

State and federal prosecutors have announced a flurry of arrests and charges in recent days for more than 320 defendants who allegedly engaged in various health care schemes worth a collective $14.6 billion in intended losses. Taken together, the cases represent the largest mass interception of health care fraud in Justice Department history, according to federal officials, who publicized the cases on Monday as part of the 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown. 'This record-setting Health Care Fraud Takedown delivers justice to criminal actors who prey upon our most vulnerable citizens and steal from hardworking American taxpayers,' Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. 'Make no mistake – this administration will not tolerate criminals who line their pockets with taxpayer dollars while endangering the health and safety of our communities.' The takedown involved multiple investigations, some dating back years. One effort, dubbed Operation Gold Rush, began in 2023, and has since netted charges in New York, Illinois, California, Florida, and New Jersey against 19 defendants, who are accused of working to submit $10.6 billion in fraudulent health care claims to Medicare for urinary catheters and other medical supplies using over one million stolen identities. The alleged scheme, carried out by defendants with ties to organized crime in Russia, Estonia, Kazakhstan, resulted in a flood of hundreds of thousands of complaints to the government health service, and unwittingly involved over 7,000 physicians whose identities were used without their knowledge. Medicare was ultimately hit with more than 1 billion catheters worth of fraudulent claims. 'I don't even know if [the United States] has the ability to manufacture 1 billion catheters in such a short time,' Isaac Bledsoe, director of strategic projects and initiatives at the Department of Health and Human Services' inspector general's office, who co-led the investigation with the DOJ and FBI, told The Washington Post. 'The absurdity, the brazenness of these actors is really just astounding.' More than 99 percent of the fraudulent payments never reached the perpetrators, federal officials said. Another alleged scheme announced as part of the bust involved a $650 million plot in which a Pakistani national who, working with at least 41 clinics, allegedly recruited patients from Arizona's Native American reservations, some of them homeless, and used their identities to submit claims for substance abuse treatment that were never given. All told, between the operations, law enforcement seized more than $245 million in cash, luxury vehicles, cryptocurrency, and other assets as prosecutors warned of a growing push by transnational criminal networks to exploit the U.S. health care system. 'These criminals didn't just steal someone else's money. They stole from you," Matthew Galeotti, who leads the Justice Department's criminal division, told reporters Monday. 'Every fraudulent claim, every fake billing, every kickback scheme represents money taken directly from the pockets of American taxpayers who fund these essential programs through their hard work and sacrifice." Ultimately, the takedown involved 324 defendants across 50 federal districts and 12 state attorneys general offices.

On Monday's episode of "Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard," Munn spoke about how her cancer journey prompted her to let go of distractions and focus on the things she truly cared about. The "X-Men: Apocalypse" actor was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy in 2023. "When I got the diagnosis, immediately, the negative thoughts in my head, I dropped all of that. Because when you are diagnosed with cancer you have one job," Munn told podcast host Dax Shepard. Munn said her sole focus at that point in time became recovery, and with all her energy dedicated to surviving cancer, she had no room to think about anything else. "That's all your mind is thinking about, and you're like 'How do I get through this? How do I get through this? How do I live? How do I survive?' Because there's no way to climb Everest with extra baggage on your shoulders," Munn said. When she recovered, she realized the experience had completely changed her mindset. "I'm like, oh, now that I got to the other side, I'm not going to — I can't imagine picking it back up," Munn said. "That's what cancer did for me," she added. "It was literally one step at a time, right, so when I have the thoughts that creep in, I think very quickly and let it go." Munn isn't the only public figure who has publicly spoken about their cancer journey. In April 2024, Shannen Doherty had said on her podcast that she was getting rid of some of her belongings after her breast cancer returned as stage 4. Doherty died in July 2024 at 53. In November, Kathy Bates said that she decided against having reconstruction surgery after getting a double mastectomy in 2012 due to breast cancer. In the US, breast cancer accounts for about 30% of all new cancer diagnoses in women each year, per data from the American Cancer Society. Although breast cancer mainly occurs in middle-aged and older women, the disease is on the rise among those who are 50 and below. Another day, another class action lawsuit in the food world. A lawsuit initially filed in February by the California Federal Court claims that Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt and Light Grey Celtic Sea Salt (both products of Celtic Ocean International LLC) are "contaminated with lead and arsenic." According to the public filing from ClassAction, heavy metal testing has been performed and tested positive for 460 ppb (parts per billion) of lead and 140 ppb of arsenic. For reference, in bottled water, the FDA currently allows a maximum of 5 ppb of lead, while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allows for 15 ppb of lead in public drinking water (such as tap water from the pipes).The Plaintiff, Mark Gonzalez of Los Angeles County, is filing the claim individually and "on behalf of all others similarly situated." The suit is claiming that "no level of lead exposure is safe," and that the Good Manufacturing Practice Quality Product label, among other packaging details, insinuates that the sea salts are "healthy." The lawsuit alleges that Celtic Ocean International LLC has failed to warn consumers and is exposing them to unlawful lead contamination, which could lead to damage in the organs, negatively impact the cardiovascular system, and accumulate over time, leaving chronic exposure. RELATED: "Once inside the human body, lead may travel to different tissues and organs, including the liver and kidneys, where it can cause damage to cells and tissues," the lawsuit said. Celtic Sea Salt is currently available at Amazon and Walmart. Considering that similar lawsuits have come to light, like General Mill's Cocoa Puffs being accused of having high levels of lead for $5 million back in 2024, the FDA is actively working on the Closer to Zero campaign. This initiative is meant to reduce childhood exposure to contaminants from foods by "developing new and improved testing methods to measure lower levels of contaminants in food." In the same vein, Ziploc was just accused of deceptive labeling.
