Kevin Costner sued by stunt performer over unscripted rape scene
Kevin Costner was sued Tuesday by Ella Hunt's stunt double for allegedly forcing her to act in an unscripted and violent rape scene in the unreleased second part of his 'Horizon' saga.
Devyn LaBella is seeking a jury trial as she accuses 70-year-old Costner — who starred in, directed and co-wrote Horizon: An American Saga — of sexual discrimination, hostile work environment, sexual harassment, failure to remedy/prevent discrimination and harassment, retaliation, interference with the exercise of civil rights, intentional infliction of distress and breach of contract, according to the complaint obtained by Variety .
LaBella, 34, claims in her suit that, on May 2, 2023, she 'was the victim of a violent unscripted, unscheduled rape scene,' directed by the Yellowstone star. LaBella says she suffered 'permanent trauma' and that her career came 'to an abrupt halt.'
'For the first several weeks, Ms LaBella professionally performed her stunts without incident. However, this experience changed dramatically. Due to its very physical nature, Defendants informed Ms LaBella she would be doubling for the majority of a scripted, aggressive and intimate rape scene between Ms Hunt's character 'Juliette' and 'Sig,' played by Douglas Smith,' reads the complaint.
On May 2, a day after the scene in question went off with protocols in place, Costner allegedly 'asked Ms. LaBella to 'stand in' for Ms Hunt to 'line up [a] shot'' in the rape scene that was added impromptu, in violation of SAG-AFTRA protocol, and featuring the character Birke, played by '6'2″, 220lbs.' Roger Ivens.
Though it 'was not within the scope of her role as a stunt double,' LaBella 'agreed to help,' though she was allegedly unaware Hunt 'walked off the set, refusing to do the scene.'
Though LaBella's intimacy scenes required an intimacy coordinator's presence — as an extension of Hunt's own contract — the complaint states that, 'Crucially, no arrangements were made for Ms Chaney or any other intimacy coordinator to be present during filming' of the new shots.
The complaint says Costner was present throughout the filming of the scene and 'very 'hands on" and was either involved in or fully aware of every single thing going on.
'Without proper notice, consent, preparation, or appropriate safeguard measures in place, such as the project's intimacy coordinator being called in, Defendant Costner directed Mr Ivens to repeatedly perform a violent simulated rape on Ms LaBella,' the lawsuit alleges.
'There was no escaping the situation, and all Ms LaBella could do was wait for the nightmare to end. … She experienced shock, embarrassment and humiliation while attempting to process the situation.'
After alleging sexual harassment on set, LaBella was not hired to return for the third instalment of the film series, which started filming in early 2024, per the complaint. She says that though she was previously regularly hired for the stunt coordinator's projects, he has not brought her on to anything since.
LaBella says she filed complaints with the California Civil Rights Division in February 2024 and again in November.
The pre- and post-Civil War epic, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1, hit theatres in June. After dismal box office numbers, the second installment — planned for August 2024 — was pulled from theatrical slates. The third and fourth chapters have not yet been scheduled.

ICE condemns app that tracks immigration agents in real time
People pray in Los Angeles as they gather to protest immigration raids and the presence of ICE in their communities. — AP US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials tcondemned a newly introduced iPhone app that lets users anonymously report sightings of ICE activity in real time, warning it puts officers in danger. The app, called ICEBlock , is modeled after Waze but for immigration enforcement. It allows users to pinpoint ICE locations on a map, add details about what they witnessed and send push alerts to others within a five-mile radius. 'In recent years, ICE has faced criticism for alleged civil rights abuses and failures to adhere to constitutional principles and due process, making it crucial for communities to stay informed about its operations,' according to a statement on the app's website. Posts are deleted after four hours, and users can only report once every five minutes within their area to prevent spam, according to the website. Its slogan reads, 'See something, tap something.' ICE acting Director Todd M. Lyons called the app dangerous. 'Advertising an app that basically paints a target on federal law enforcement officers' backs is sickening,' he said in a statement. 'My officers and agents are already facing a 500% increase in assaults.' Developer Joshua Aaron described ICEBlock as a grassroots initiative to keep communities informed about ICE activity. 'When I saw what was going on in this country, I just really felt like I had to do something,' he said in an interview with Time , referring to immigration enforcement raids following President Donald Trump's return to the White House. 'The app is to inform, not obstruct. This is to have people avoid having that confrontation in the first place.' ICEBlock , which became available to iPhone users in April, is currently available only on iOS devices and, according to its website, stores no personal data, making it impossible to trace reports back to individual users. Trump's latest immigration crackdown sparked mass protests in Los Angeles, where he deployed the California National Guard and later the Marines without Gov Gavin Newsom's consent. A court ultimately ruled Trump could keep control of the National Guard in the city. – Los Angeles Daily News/Tribune News Service

Sean Lau says his perspective on fatherhood changed after starring in 'Papa'
Despite having no children of his own, Hong Kong actor Sean Lau Ching-wan delivers one of his most emotionally gripping performances yet as a father in the true crime film Papa . Directed by Philip Yung, the movie – which premiered at the 37th Tokyo International Film Festival in October 2024 – is based on a 2010 murder case in Tsuen Wan, where a mentally unstable teenager stabbed his mother and younger sister before turning himself in. But unlike the typical murder drama, Papa – now screening at cinemas nationwide – doesn't dwell on the horrific crime. 'It focuses more on the emotional wreckage left behind rather than the crime itself. 'It's not a murder tale but a story about emotional survival,' the 46-year-old told StarLifestyle in a recent roundtable interview alongside Lau on Zoom. Having previously directed Port Of Call (2015), another movie based on a real-life murder, Yung was careful to avoid sensationalism. Instead, he spent over 10 years developing the script and even met with the real father at the centre of the case to understand the emotional layers behind the tragedy. 'He has now moved on from the case. I don't know if he watched the movie. 'I learned about his emotions, his late wife and daughter, as well as his mentally ill son. 'Sadness doesn't have to be loud... The father cares for his son but he keeps his grief internal and his emotions well-hidden – that's what makes it more heartbreaking,' he said. A role that demands heart In Papa , Lau plays Nin – a humble cafe owner wrestling with intense survivor's guilt after his son Ming (Dylan So) murders his own mother (Jo Koo) and sister Grace (Lainey Hung). After being diagnosed with schizophrenia, Ming is sentenced to indefinite psychiatric care. Still, Nin continues to visit him twice a month, carrying his grief silently. In the film, Lau (right) plays Nin, a father struggling with survivor's guilt after his son murders his mother and his sister. For Lau, 61, the role marked a turn from the stoic personas he's often portrayed, pushing him to delve into a more emotionally raw and vulnerable territory. To embody Nin, he immersed himself fully in the character's quiet turmoil. 'I believe no man is born knowing how to be a father. 'You learn through life experiences – getting married, having kids and growing with them. 'I carried that mindset while filming and learned how to be a father along the way,' he said. That approach paid off as Lau's performance struck a chord with both audiences and critics, earning him his fourth Best Actor win at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards earlier in April. Lau was named Best Actor at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards on April 27, 2025, for his performance in 'Papa' . Photo: AP He had previously taken home the honour for Detective Vs Sleuths (2022), Overheard 3 (2014) and My Name Is Fame (2006). 'It's rare for my movies to have such a strong emotional impact on others. 'I was shocked because it wasn't impactful to just movie- goers – even friends who watched the film connected deeply with it. 'It made me realise my profession carries more weight than expected,' added the actor, who's married to former Miss Hong Kong winner Amy Kwok. Shifting perspective Yung praised Lau's performance, revealing that the latter had always been his first choice for the role of Nin. 'Kids feel close to him. I wanted the father in Papa to be loving, wise and grounded... Sean brought that out with great realism,' he said. Lau shared that prior to filming Papa , his understanding of fatherhood was fairly simple as he didn't share a close bond with his father and has no children of his own. However, his perspective has since shifted. 'It feels like I've gained some insight on fatherhood after filming, but at the same time, I feel like I haven't fully understood it. 'It's strange how something so simple carries so much weight,' he said. As for whether he had ever considered reaching out to the real father behind the case once more to personally thank him, Lau replied that he didn't want to disturb the man or risk reopening old wounds. 'I don't think we should pry too much into the father's life. I'm grateful for his tolerance. It was his patience that allowed us to complete this story.'

From IMAX Cameras To Star-Studded Cast: 5 Fun Facts About Christopher Nolan's 'Odyssey'
Set in ancient Greek mythology, the legendary Greek King Odysseus sets out on a perilous 10-year journey back home to Ithaca, after the Trojan War. Facing mythical creatures, treacherous seas and countless trials, we follow this hero in the greatest cinematic epic of all time. Known for his cinematic masterpieces such as 'Inception' and his Academy Award-winning film, 'Oppenheimer', Christopher Nolan is a favourite name among film enthusiasts and critics alike. With each film of his proving to be a hit at the box office, Nolan's upcoming 2026 Greek mythology film, 'Odyssey', has been the talk since its announcement. As we wait for the premiere of his next work, here are some fun facts about 'Odyssey': 1. It Will Be Shot Entirely With IMAX Cameras From the man who grew an entire field of corn to skip the use of CGI, 'Odyssey' will be the first film ever to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras. To put it into perspective, 'Oppenheimer', which was Nolan's film known to have used shots on IMAX, only had 23% of its footage or 70 minutes, shot with the format. This means we're looking at quality sound and image for his most anticipated film. 2. It Will Be Shot At 'Goat Island' Just as Homer imagined Odysseus resting at the 'Island of Wonders', which is now known as Favignana or 'Goat Island' off the coast of Sicily, Nolan will be shooting at the very location where it is said that the Greek King set foot. The film was also said to be shot in other locations around the world, with rumoured locations to feature Monaco, the UK and Greece. 3. It Features A Star-Studded Cast When you've got a decorated director on the cusp of his next biggest film, its cast should also reflect his storytelling to its maximum potential. Joining Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland is speculated to play his son, Telemachus, in the film. Other notable cast members include Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Mia Goth, Robert Pattinson, Jon Berthal, Elliot Page, and Lupita Nyong'o. 4. Film Parents! It is confirmed that Christopher Nolan will team up with his wife, Emma Thomas, for the production of 'Odyssey'. Three-time Academy Award winner and longtime production partner, Thomas, had co-produced all of Nolan's films with him, including 'The Dark Knight' and 'Dunkirk'. Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, who worked on 'Interstellar, and 'Tenet' with Nolan, also joins the project. 5. It's Set To Release In 2026 Christopher Nolan's 'Odyssey' is set to premiere worldwide on 17th July 2026. With only two released visuals from the movie and cast members filming in Sicily, details of the film are yet to be revealed. However, there is just over a year left until the premiere, so fans can anticipate more teasers in the coming months. Are you excited about Christopher Nolan's adaptation of Homer's 'Odyssey'?
