NDTV Exclusive: Why Shabana Azmi Calls Her Rocky Aur Rani Co-Star Jaya Bachchan "Very Funny"

New Delhi:
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar, completed 2 years on July 28, 2025. The film boasted of an ensemble cast, led by Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in titular roles.
In conversation with NDTV on the film's anniversary, Shabana Azmi spoke about her bonding with another veteran actress in the team - Jaya Bachchan. She played the role of the antagonist in the film, Dhanlakshmi Randhawa.
What's Happening
Thanks to social media and a deluge of pap videos, Jaya Bachchan is infamous for her interactions with photographers and, mostly, her disapproval of them popping up everywhere.
Speaking of the reputation that the younger generation has of the veteran, Shabana Azmi refutes it as she calls her Rocky Aur Rani co-star "very, very funny".
"Jaya is very warm, and a completely different person from the image that the media has created about her. She was the reason why I had joined the Film and Television Institute of India after watching the short film Suman. I've never seen acting of that kind. And I said, wow, there's some place where we can learn acting of that kind. And that's where I want to go."
Shabana Azmi highlights the iconic moments when Kanwal (Dharmendra) and her onscreen character Jamini share the most-talked-about kiss, and Jaya Bachchan faints in the most dramatic manner.
She says, "We were laughing even on the set. She is extremely funny."
About Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahaani
A cute-meet love story between a flamboyant Punjabi boy, Rocky and an opinionated Bengali journalist Rani. They fall in love despite their clashing personalities and diverse cultural backgrounds.
As their families oppose, the lovebirds decide to swap their homes for three months to win them over before getting married.
In A Nutshell
Shabana Azmi spoke of her lovely bond with Jaya Bachchan on the sets of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The actress also spoke about how Jaya Bachchan is vastly opposite to the image she has in the media.

Neeraj Pandey On AI-Edited Raanjhanaa Ending: "Even If Eros Says It Has The Rights, Still No Excuse To Do It"

The Tamil version of Raanjhanaa, Ambikapathy, is set to be re-released in theatres on August 1 with an alternate, a happier ending using Artificial Intelligence (AI), a move by production banner Eros International Media that has left film's director Aanand L Rai "heartbroken". Film personalities including Kabir Khan, Kanika Dhillon, Varun Grover, Renuka Shahane, and Tanuj Garg have already called the development "preposterous" and "unethical". Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey, known for movies such as Special 26 and Baby as well as web series Special Ops, is the latest voice to join the ongoing discourse. "AI is just a tool. A human being is operating it. So it's the intent behind its use that matters. And if a piece of cinema is being altered without involving the director and writer, then it's utterly disrespectful. They could have done better. "I'm honestly zapped to hear this. If Eros says, 'We have the rights, we can do anything,' that's still no excuse. A little communication wouldn't have hurt. If they had just spoken to Anand and the other creators involved in birthing that film, it would have been the right thing to do," the director told NDTV. While Neeraj Pandey admits that cinema has evolved with every technological shift, AI is "a giant leap". "While it (AI) is still nascent, it will develop rapidly. Hopefully, we'll use it well -- and not misuse it," he adds. In a statement, Eros International Media clarified its position on the re-release of Ambikapathy, Raanjhanaa 's Tamil version, calling itself "the sole producer and exclusive copyright holder of Raanjhanaa". "The re-release of Ambikapathy with an alternate AI-assisted ending is a legally compliant, transparently labelled, and artistically guided creative edition intended for Tamil-speaking audiences. It does not replace or alter the original Raanjhanaa, which remains untouched and widely available across all platforms. This version is part of a global and longstanding tradition in cinema of offering alternate edits, localised adaptations, and anniversary re-releases. "As the sole financier, producer, and rights holder of Raanjhanaa, Eros holds complete ownership and control of all intellectual property, moral rights, and derivative rights under Indian Copyright Law," the company said in the statement. While Eros respects the contributions of all creators involved in Raanjhanaa, it is imperative to reinforce that under Indian law, the producer is the legal author of a film, it further said. "Mr Rai's disassociation from the Tamil alternate version is his personal choice, but his claim to ownership or moral authority over the work is neither contractually supported nor legally enforceable. The alternate ending was crafted under the direction of a human creative team using AI only as an assistive tool -- not as an autonomous content generator." The company also refuted claims by Dhanush suggesting that Aanand L Rai personally invested funds to secure his casting in Raanjhanaa. Eros also took on Aanand L Rai and his production banner Colour Yellow Productions for the "unauthorised use of 'world of Raanjhanaa" in his upcoming film Tere Ishk Mein also starring Dhanush. "Eros strongly objects to the illegal and misleading attempt by Mr Aanand L Rai and Colour Yellow Productions to position the upcoming film Tere Ishk Mein as part of the 'world of Raanjhanaa ', despite having no legal rights, approvals, or IP ownership to do so. "Eros has formally issued a Cease & Desist notice dated July 25, 2025, demanding that all parties immediately cease unauthorised references, marketing, and creative use of any derivative elements of Raanjhanaa." Both Raanjhanaa and its Tamil version Ambikapathy are now embroiled in a moral, ethical and legal battle. It would be interesting to see the reaction of the viewers of the original Ambikapathy when the Tamil version of Raanjhanaa re-releases in theatres tomorrow, with a new, AI-edited climax.

Alia Bhatt Turns Heads In Stylish Gym Athleisure, Fans React As Video Goes Viral

Alia Bhatt will be seen in a female-led installment titled Alpha and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. Alia Bhatt is a fitness lover and loves to keep herself fit. Recently, she was spotted in a gym athleisure in Mumbai and looked radiant. The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani actress was clicked by the paparazzi, and the video of her casual yet stylish appearance has gone viral. In the video, shared by Filmygyan, we can see her dressed in a crop top paired with high-waisted leggings and a bun. Alia did not pose for the camera. Her toned physique grabbed fans attention. Many dropped heart emojis and some also called her beautiful. Watch the video here: Recently, Alia's reaction to War 2 went viral. Taking to her Instagram story, Alia re-shared the War 2 trailer and wrote, 'Mazedaaaaaar. See you on the 14th. In a cinema near meee." While the message may seem like a routine show of support at first glance, the specific mention of August 14 and her playful tone have only intensified speculation about her cameo in the film's post-credit scene. The buzz around Alia's entry into the YRF Spy Universe has been swirling for months, particularly with the announcement of Alpha — YRF's first-ever female-led spy film, co-starring Sharvari Wagh, set to release on December 25, 2025. According to a report by India Today, both Alia and Sharvari are said to appear in a mysterious post-credit cameo in War 2 — one that subtly teases the narrative of Alpha. 'It's short, yes, but it has tension, mystery, and a hint of what these two women are capable of. It's not just a cameo — it's a setup," a source told the outlet. Another insider revealed that the cameo was filmed under tight security earlier this year, with only a handful of crew members on set to preserve the secrecy. Alia Bhatt was last seen in Jigra, released in 2024. Backed by Dharma Productions, Viacom 18 Studios and Bhatt's Eternal Sunshine Productions, Jigra featured Alia Bhatt as a troubled woman who attempts to rescue her brother (played by Vedang Raina) from an East Asian prison. Up next, the actress will join the YRF Spy Universe in a female-led installment titled Alpha and is set to collaborate with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the romantic drama Love & War, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal. "Ahaan Panday And Aneet Padda Are Numb After Saiyaara Success": Director Mohit Suri To NDTV

After the staggering success of Saiyaara, debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda have disappeared but only temporarily. The breakout stars of the romantic drama are currently out of the country, taking a much-needed break while their first film continues its historic box office run. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Saiyaara director Mohit Suri and production banner Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani, who launched the fresh-faced duo, say the two are still processing the scale of what has happened. "I think they are numb," says Akshaye Widhani. "It's happening around you, but you don't know how to react. And it's their first film. The love that is pouring in is unreal. They're not in the country right now, and I think that's a good thing. Let them be normal kids for a bit. When they come back, it's back to work." Mohit Suri, known for creating some of Bollywood's most iconic love stories, says he speaks to both actors every day. "Once in the morning, once at night," he smiles. "They keep sending me videos. They're so happy, they're getting recognised. For them, every day is new, and they want to share it with me. They keep asking, 'Why aren't you here?' It's very sweet." Mohit Suri says the excitement Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda are feeling reminds him of earlier moments in his career. "I saw this look on Emraan's face when his first film (Footpath) released. I saw it with Aditya and Shraddha during Aashiqui 2. That mix of disbelief and pure joy. Ahaan and Aneet don't yet know what's coming next but they're soaking it all in." The Strategy: Keep The Mystery, Trust The Film Much of Saiyaara 's impact came from the fact that audiences met Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda for the first time as Krish and Vaani, not through interviews, media appearances or viral reels. That was no accident. In an exclusive chat with NDTV, Akshaye Widhani explained YRF's bold pre-release strategy - keep the newcomers away from all promotions. "We wanted to save the mystery for the big screen," he says. "As debutants, we didn't want them to be judged by doing something wrong in an interview, or a misstep on an Instagram reel because that would impact how you perceive them." Instead, the studio leaned into something they've always been known for: music. "We had great music we could get behind," Widhani said. "We loved the title track from the day we heard it, and we thought we had a winner. So, we began our music campaign early. Much earlier than most films do because we understand music takes time to travel" Gen Z and the Return of Big, Messy, All-Consuming Love Beyond the box office numbers and marketing strategy, what's truly remarkable about Saiyaara is how deeply it resonated with Gen-Z, a generation often accused of being emotionally detached. Director Mohit Suri says he's been overwhelmed by the way young audiences have responded to the film. "I think we were underestimating this generation," he says. "We thought because they casually get involved, or because texting and swiping is easy, they don't feel. But the fact is they were all waiting for something like this." Saiyaara didn't hold back. It told a story of intense love, heartbreak, longing and vulnerability and Gen-Z embraced every emotion. "The heart is still in the same place where we left it in the middle of the chest," Mohit Suri laughs. "And it still hurts when it breaks there, not online." He's seen hundreds of videos, messages, and love letters from young fans. "Every generation says, 'This generation doesn't know love.' But love will always exist after me, after this generation, and after the next." With Saiyaara, Mohit Suri didn't just make another love story. He reminded an entire generation what it feels like to fall - hard. And judging by the reaction, Gen-Z was ready to believe in big, messy love again.
