‘She Is The Kindest I Know': Karan Johar On Jaya Bachchan's On-Set Behaviour

Last Updated: Karan Johar expressed that Jaya is not like Dhanalakshmi at all and was, in fact, the crew's favourite person on set. Remember Jaya Bachchan's role of Dhanlakshmi in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani? When internet users got to know about the veteran actress's character, they quickly began to compare Jaya Bachchan's character in the film to her public appearances, where she is often snapped speaking coldly with the paparazzi. Many assumed that this is how the actress behaves on set. But during a 2023 interview, Karan Johar quashed all assumptions and said that Jaya is not like Dhanalakshmi at all and was, in fact, the crew's favourite person on set. Talking to Midday, Karan said, 'I want to put this on record, Aunty J, as I call her, is far from what you think she is. She is the kindest, warmest, largest-hearted person I know. My crew, if you ask them who is the favourite person on set, they would say Jaya Bachchan. She is the only person who remembered the 14 AD's names, knew what they did, where they lived and how many siblings they had; she cared enough for all of them." 'When she used to feel a crew member was overworking, she would send for samosas and mithai or get a cake on set. People loved her," he added. Elaborating further, the filmmaker said, 'She just has an aversion to invasion of her privacy, not paps. Jaya Aunty doesn't hold back. She is not this person at all. She is not Dhanlakshmi, far from it. I just wanted to cast her in a role different from what she had done in her career. She had never played the antagonist or a character with grey shades. She has always been the lovable mother or the Guddi girl, so for me it was just casting against what she has done." Karan Johar goes on to re-emphasise that Jaya is grossly misunderstood. 'Everyone who writes on Twitter, Jayaji is playing herself, I am like, No dude, you don't know anything about Mrs Jaya Bachchan. She is the warmest, kindest and most giving human being. She is so calm and composed." 'She would sit there on set, chat with all the ADs and she would play pranks. She is great fun. And she is nothing like this. It is just that if you put cameras in her face, she is going to get annoyed. I wish everyone could get an experience of the large heart that Jaya Aunty has. She is not like this at all," he concluded. Jaya Bachchan's Role In Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani Jaya Bachchan essays the role of Ranveer Singh's grandmother and the angry matriarch of the Randhawa household. Although Dhanalakshmi took over the family's small sweets business and turned it into a grand empire, she remained committed to certain traditional values. As such, she had certain expectations for her daughters-in-law, such as covering their heads with a dupatta and focusing on housework rather than pursuing their aspirations. When Ranveer falls in love with Alia Bhatt's character Rani, Dhanalakshmi stands in their way as an obstacle. She opposes their relationship, but when things didn't go as planned, an otherwise curt Dhanalakshmi turns to manipulation and cunning tactics to achieve her goals. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, the family entertainer marked Karan Johar's directorial comeback on the big screens. Besides the lead actors, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani brought together an impressive cast, including veterans like Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Jaya Bachchan. The movie also had special cameo appearances by Varun Dhawan, Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. When Karan Johar defended Jaya Bachchan's image; 'She's the warmest person I know,' says; the ‘Rocky Aur Rani' set loved her

When Karan Johar directed 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' , he made it a point to cast veteran actress Jaya Bachchan in a role completely different from what she had done before. As Dhanlakshmi Randhawa, the strict matriarch of a powerful family, Bachchan portrayed a cold, authoritarian figure. But, as Karan revealed in an interview with Mid-Day in the year 2023, she is nothing like that in real life. In fact, she was the most loved person on set. 'My crew, if you ask them who is the favourite person on set, they would say Jaya Bachchan,' he said. From remembering every AD's name to sending sweets and snacks for overworked staff, Jaya Bachchan, or "Aunty J" as he fondly calls her, was the heart of the set. A Misunderstood Persona Karan addressed the long-standing perception that Jaya Bachchan is unfriendly in public—an image shaped by viral videos showing her frustration with paparazzi. He clarified that what people often interpret as rudeness is simply her aversion to invasion of privacy. 'She just has an aversion to invasion of her privacy, not paps,' he said, stressing that she is a calm, giving person who enjoys playful banter and camaraderie when she feels safe. 'She is not Dhanlakshmi. Far from it,' he insisted. For Karan, casting her in a grey-shaded character was about breaking her usual on-screen image of the lovable mother or the innocent Guddi girl. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Find your perfect SUV for road trips and city life. 'Everyone who writes on Twitter, 'Jayaji is playing herself,' I'm like, no dude, you don't know anything about Mrs. Jaya Bachchan,' he said. Karan Johar's previous directorial outing was 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' which starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead. The movie received mixed reviews. When Jaya Bachchan said addressing someone as ‘tu, tum' are ‘big red flags': ‘Aapne kabhi mujhe nana ko ‘tum' karke baat karte huye suna hai?'

Jaya Bachchan, often criticised for her stern responses to the paparazzi, once shared her thoughts on 'bad manners,' emphasising that addressing someone as 'Tu, Tum' is derogatory. 'Bad manners for me would be a big red flag. Ek cheez jo mujhe bahut buri lagti hai jab log 'tu, tum' karke baat karte hai…chahiye kisse se bhi ho…Aapne kabhi mujhe nana ko tum se baat karte huye suna hai? (One thing that really upsets me is when people address others with 'tu', 'tum', or whatever it may be. Have you ever heard me using 'tum' for your grandfather?) I think these things require conscious efforts, which your generation doesn't do,' the Guddi actor told granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda and daughter Shweta Bachchan on her YouTube podcast in 2024. Taking a cue from this confession, let's understand whether how we address someone makes any difference. Words build or break bonds. Respect doesn't begin in grand gestures. 'It begins in the way we address, acknowledge, and speak,' said Delnna Rrajesh, psychotherapist, energy healer and life coach. 'We often underestimate how much the way we speak becomes the culture we pass down. If we speak with sharpness, our children absorb that as normal. If we interrupt, dismiss, or use commanding tones under the guise of 'just being casual,' we unknowingly plant seeds of emotional distance. When someone says 'Tu' instead of 'Aap' in close relationships, it's not always disrespectful. But when tone carries entitlement, command, or indifference, the relationship begins to erode,' shared Delnna. As a therapist, she reiterated having seen this happen silently. 'The parent who constantly feels disrespected by their adult child. The spouse who starts to shrink from conversations because they don't feel spoken to, they feel spoken at. The child who begins to mirror the same sharpness in school or with friends,' shared Delnna. So, here are a few real-world, practical ways to build respectful communication: *Start with 'aap' when in doubt. Even if your culture or family is informal, beginning with gentleness sets the tone. *Watch your tone, not just your words. 'Please' doesn't work if it's laced with sarcasm. *Never correct someone in public. Respect means preserving dignity, especially when the other is vulnerable. *Avoid commands. Use requests. Replace 'Do this' with 'Can you please help me with…?' *Acknowledge, don't assume. 'Just because someone is younger or close doesn't mean they owe you informality,' said Delnna. *Model what you want to see. If you interrupt, shout, or disregard, expect that energy to echo back at you eventually. *Repair when you slip. A genuine 'I'm sorry for the way I said that' can heal more than you imagine. In the end, the greatest way to teach values to the next generation is not by lecturing them, but by living them. 'Your children won't remember every piece of advice but they will remember how you made them feel,' said Delnna.
