WNBA stars' All-Star Game message on pay increase draws social media reaction
Each WNBA All-Star, including Indiana Fever sharpshooter Caitlin Clark who was sidelined for the game, wore the shirt. The clothing also featured the Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) logo underneath the message.
The shirts read, "Pay Us What You Owe Us." However, the message didn't appear to resonate across social media.
WNBPA president Nneka Ogwumike praised the players for using their platform.
"I'm just so inspired by the amount of players that showed up, the engagement that was there," she said. "That's really what it's all about. Because the more that happens, the more that we're going to be able to get things done. I think today we're going to be able to use this conversation to start rolling the ball on things."
Players have argued that business has been booming for the league and they deserve an increase in salaries because of it. The WNBA was a part of a new $2.2 billion rights deal that will start next season and, with the league planning to expand to 18 teams by 2030, the new franchises are paying a $250 million expansion fee.
The New York Post reported last year that the league was projected to lose $40 million during the 2024 season. The new media rights deal is expected to bring at least a $100 million increase from what the league was making on its current rights deal, which the report said was about $60 million in 2024.
Even through the contention, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said Saturday night that she was optimistic a deal would get done.
"I'm still really optimistic that we'll get something done that would be transformational," she said. "And that, next year at All-Star, we'll be talking about how great everything is. Obviously there's a lot of hard work to be done on both sides to get there."
The current CBA is set to expire on Oct. 31.

Ryne Sandberg dies at 65: Reaction to death of Cubs icon and Hall of Famer
Major League Baseball lost another one of its titans and Hall of Famers with the passing of Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg, who was a 10-time All-Star in his career, passed away at the age of 65 on Monday, July 28, after another battle with metastatic prostate cancer that had returned and spread to other organs in his body back in December. "Ryne Sandberg was a legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise and a beloved figure throughout Major League Baseball," MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. Caminero and Rasmussen help Rays beat Yankees 4-2 in series opener
NEW YORK (AP) — Junior Caminero hit a two-run homer, Drew Rasmussen recovered from a rocky start on the mound and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 4-2 Monday night in the opener of a four-game series. Caminero connected against Cam Schlittler (1-1) in the first inning for his 27th home run. Josh Lowe hit a go-ahead single in the fifth to chase the rookie starter. Tampa Bay won for only the eighth time in 26 games to avoid falling under .500 for the first time since May 24. In the bottom of the first, the Yankees loaded the bases when Rasmussen (8-5) allowed consecutive one-out singles to Jasson Domínguez, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton. The right-hander then walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. and issued a free pass to Ryan McMahon two batters later, forcing in another run. But after the Yankees tied it, Rasmussen retired 12 straight and 13 of his final 14 batters. He permitted four hits and struck out five in five innings. Edwin Uceta fanned four in two perfect innings, and Pete Fairbanks got four outs for his 18th save. Yandy Díaz added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, when the Rays had two infield hits. Schlittler allowed three runs and seven hits over 4 1/3 innings in his third career start. The Yankees have lost eight of 12 following a five-game winning streak from July 6-11.
