SST revision, expansion to have minimal impact on construction, consumer segment
However, the exercise is likely to have an adverse impact on the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) sector, as well as financial services and private healthcare, it said in a note today.
It said the construction and consumer sectors were likely to be more insulated, noting that the changes to the SST were drafted with the welfare of the majority of Malaysians in mind, particularly in the case of the consumer segment.
It also welcomed the fact that the revised SST framework remained mindful of potential cascading effects along the business supply chain.
Meanwhile, Hong Leong Investment Bank Bhd believes that the expanded SST is a non-event for markets, as it is targeted in nature and deliberately structured to avoid essential goods and services.
"While sectors such as construction, banking, and healthcare may appear exposed, we expect any profit impact to be negligible," it said in a separate note.
It noted that in terms of construction services, most contract structures allow for cost pass-through mechanisms, and new project tenders are likely to be repriced, transferring the incremental cost to the end-customer.
For financial services, it does not expect any material impact on banks, as they primarily serve as tax collection agents on behalf of the government.
"Nevertheless, we believe demand for these services will stay fairly inelastic, given limited substitutability," it added. - Bernama

MOF Warns of RM100 SARA Aid Scam Links
The Finance Ministry (MOF) has clarified that recipients of the one-off RM100 SARA aid do not need to register, amid growing concerns over scam links and misinformation spreading online. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said the aid will be automatically credited to all eligible MyKad holders aged 18 and above starting Aug 31, and any claims that users must sign up through online portals are false and potentially dangerous. 'We've received numerous inquiries and complaints about fake websites and links related to RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid registration. 'Let me be clear, these are scams. Do not click on or share them,' Lim emphasised, while stressing that no application is needed as the aid will be directly credited to recipients' MyKad. On July 23, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that a one-off RM100 SARA cash aid that will be credited via MyKad to all Malaysians aged 18 and above. This part of broader Madani government initiatives, which also include toll hike postponements and a RON95 fuel price cut to RM1.99 per litre later this year. Lim added that in the event eligible individuals do not receive the payment by Aug 31, the government will provide follow-up information and guidance. Meanwhile, Lim also revealed that the government is reviewing proposals to include wet goods such as chicken, fish and meat under the SARA programme. 'The consideration is part of ongoing efforts to align the programme with real consumer needs, especially among lower-income households. 'We're open to feedback. Any expansion will be thoroughly studied in consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the recipients themselves,' she said. As of May 1, the SARA programme covers 14 categories of essential goods, including food, medicine, hygiene products, school supplies and household cleaning items, amounting to over 90,000 eligible products nationwide. Strive for change to the best of one's ability, Anwar reminds PKR members
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reminded Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members to hold firmly to the call for islah mastata'tum, meaning to strive for change to the best of one's ability. Anwar, who is also PKR president, said this during a meeting with Federal Territories PKR members in Putrajaya today. "We may not be able to achieve everything in the blink of an eye, but we will continue to advance the reform agenda step by step," he said in a Facebook post. He said the Federal Territories have long stood as one of the strongholds of PKR's struggle, but the party's strength would only be meaningful if it continued to be grounded in core values and grassroots efforts. "Divisions must remain active through programmes that truly engage with the people, regardless of race, age or background," he said. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said that in charting the path forward, criticisms and reminders must be welcomed in the spirit of the struggle.
