Bill Belichick, UNC not in rush to name starting QB
Saturday was a massive day for the UNC football program, which kicked off Training Camp and inched closer to the start of live football action.
One of North Carolina's greatest storylines entering Training Camp – and one that'll continue until the season opener on September 1 against TCU – is who will be starting quarterback.
The Tar Heels return initial 2024 starter Max Johnson, who is fully recovered from a broken leg suffered in last year's opener at Minnesota. UNC also nabbed South Alabama quarterback Gio Lopez in the transfer portal, while landing a commitment from in-state, 4-star quarterback Bryce Baker.
During media availability to open Training Camp, North Carolina head football coach Bill Belichick spoke on his new team's quarterback battle – and when he hopes to have a decision by.
"We don't have a specific date," Belichick said. "I think the time will be when we're sure. What you don't want to do is pick player A – and then end up going to player B. Let them compete and then once you're sure it's player B, make it player B or player A, whoever goes. I think once we're confident that we know who has earned that spot, cause that's what it'll be, it's not us picking them, it'll be that player earning it.
After the Tar Heels hit the Bill Koman Practice Field, Johnson spoke to the media for several minutes. Johnson echoed Belichick's sentiments, while also describing what he needs to do in order to be named QB1.
"The best man's going to play and whoever that is, I know Coach Belichick's going to make the best decision," Johnson said. "I'm just blessed to be here, be able to compete. It just feels good to be able to do it again.'
'I think just trying to be as consistent as I can be," Johnson continued. "Don't get too high, don't get too low. Don't make the bad plays worse. Focus on what they're (coaches) telling us. Take the checkdowns when it's there, take the shot when it's there and being able to manipulate the defense with your eyes. Don't change because of something good happening, something bad happening."
Exactly 30 days from Saturday, Johnson will know whether he earns UNC's starting quarterback gig or not. He certainly has the collegiate experience factor, but Lopez and Baker have the 2024 live action Johnson doesn't.

Tennessee Titans make roster move before practice, sign Arlington Hambright
Before the Tennessee Titans hit the field for their ninth training camp practice, head coach Brian Callahan met with the media and touched on multiple topics, including Cam Ward, red zone work, and the way the team will attack the next couple of weeks with joint practices on tap. He also updated the injury situation and who will not be suiting up on Sunday. Chandler Brewer, Blake Hance, and T'Vondre Sweat will all be sidelined with injuries. They will be joined by Kevin Zeitler, who will be receiving a veteran's rest day. With the offensive line short on bodies, the Titans made a roster move on Sunday morning, waiving wide receiver Ramel Keyton and signing offensive lineman Arlington Hambright. Hambright should be a familiar name to Titans' fans. The team signed the journeyman offensive lineman in 2024 to add some depth to the interior of their offensive line and spent most of the season bouncing between the practice squad and active roster. Hambright was originally a seventh-round pick by the Chicago Bears and has spent time with five NFL teams during his career. James Franklin talks injury updates for Penn State
Coming off the longest season in Penn State history meant some injury situations lingered a little farther into the offseason than the program is accustomed to seeing. With training camp open in Happy Valley with big expectations placed on the program going into the 2025 season, Penn State head coach James Franklin says the health situations will start getting better in time for the season, with some exceptions. "[Some] of these guys are limited up there," Franklin said when meeting with the media on Saturday in Beaver Stadium. "They are ready to go and I think if you asked them, they could play in a game right now. But our trainers and doctors, you know, smart, we hold them in the limited category until they actually go out and do it." Franklin explained players were to be reevaluated following the first practice of the camp, and that could lead to some quick upgrades with player availability. Franklin did not show concern for a lengthy list of players showing up as limited at the moment. Among the players coming back from injury and standing out is offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh, who started 10 games for the Nittany Lions last season before being sidelined by an injury. Donkoh could be an option at multiple offensive line positions now that he is healthy and Nolan Rucci has proven himself at the right tackle position. That has given the entire offensive line a boost with depth in its favor with a healthy Donkoh in the mix. Of course, the injury updates were not all positive for Penn State this weekend. It has been reported that wide receiver and special teams returner Kaden Saunders will be out for an extended period of time with what has been reported as a long-term injury. Saunders was limited due to injury last season and could potentially be out for the entire 2025 season already. Penn State's 2025 season kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 30 with a home game against Nevada. Follow Kevin McGuire on Threads, Bluesky, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook.
