Joe Franchi: Ebbw Vale need best game to beat Llandovery

The Steelmen host Premiership champions Llandovery in the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 12.15pm, S4C) with the prize of either facing Cardiff at the Arms Park or hosting Newport a week on Sunday.
Ebbw, SRC Challenger Shield holders, crucially earned home advantage for the play-offs by finishing second in the regular season behind the Blue and Blacks.
Jason Strange's men were given a tough time by Carmarthen Quins in the quarters last weekend but got the job done 45-35.
Courtesy of a draw bracket that strangely puts first against third and second versus fourth, they now face a Drovers side who are hunting a third title on the spin and who beat them 39-7 in March's SRC Cup final.
Crucially, this time it's on Ebbw soil and that gives Franchi & Co a real shot avoiding the same fate as last season, when overpowered by Newport at Spytty Park in the last four.

'We had a good regular season when finishing second and want to go a bit better than last year by getting into the final, and then hopefully get some silverware,' said hooker Franchi, a Premiership title winner with the Steelmen in 2016.
'We have kicked on and are in a better place than last year after some good additions to give us an extra edge.
'We've played Llandovery three times already this season and are 2-1 up but we are under no illusions about what it will take.
'They are probably the best attacking side in the league so we will have to be on our mettle defensively.
'We back ourselves at home and our unbeaten run gives us confidence but I'd say it will take our best performance of the season to get the victory and move on to the final.'
It's fair to assume that Franchi will be at the heart of the effort against the Drovers after a remarkable try-scoring season.
The hooker has so far chalked up 25 scores – perhaps the 'Catch 'n' Kynes' that helped Ebbw to the title nine years ago will be renamed.

'There's only one Ronnie Kynes! I'm driving the bus this year and we work so hard on our maul,' said Franchi.
'It's not just a case of sticking our heads in and seeing what happens, there is a lot in the process and the work has shown with the tries scored by me and Ieuan [Morris, his fellow hooker who is on 10].
'It's a great weapon and one that we will try to use on Saturday but you can't be one-dimensional at this stage of the season. We have other tricks up our sleeve but always have the lineout drive to go back to.'
Franchi's twin Dom returns to the XV at inside centre while full-back Morgan Richards and wing Ieuan Evans also start, with no changes up front.
Ebbw Vale: Morgan Richards; Ieuan Evans, Ethan Phillips, Dom Franchi, Ryan Gardner; Evan Lloyd, Gruff Tough; Luke Garrett, Joe Franchi (captain), Adam Williams, Dylan Bartlett, Curtis Gregory, Jack Pope, Sion Parry, Ryan Jenkins.
Replacements: Ieuan Morris, Morgan Williams, Adam Court, Cam Regan, Lewis Young, Rory Harries, Cameron Davies, Ewan Bowden.
Llandovery: To come

Rangers' concern can't be Champions League - true marker is vs Celtic

That's because they need to focus on their 'true marker' for success this season. Which, according to former Scotland international Colin Hendry, is to win the Scottish Premiership title back from Celtic. Rangers will go into a two-legged encounter against the Greek giants, starting next week. "Russell would have been 34 or 35 at the time and it was his first few weeks in the job at MK Dons," Hendry wrote in The Sunday Post. "We met for an hour and I was impressed. "He was young, he was enthusiastic and he was honest. Russell showed me that he had something about him. I left the meeting thinking that I was going to follow his career. "There is no doubt Russell will have learned so much from those four or five months in the EPL (with Southampton). Rangers will get the benefit of that. "It is not going to be easy for him, that's for sure. It's a massive ask to go to Rangers and turn them into title winners. But that's what he has signed up for. "He knows the level of expectation and he knows that he will need to deliver. Rangers is a massive football club and they want success. They are fed up seeing Celtic being so dominant. No, the fans wanted us to win by three or four. "That's what Rangers is about. But that kind of pressure isn't for everyone. Whether a manager or a player, you need to have something special about you to cope with that every week. "It's been clear in the past decade or so that too many people at Rangers haven't been up to the task and it needs to change."

Rangers players true feelings on Celtic escape Ibrox dressing room as 49ers 'marker' goes beyond £40m gauntlet

Colin Hendry is a big fan of the new Ibrox boss and reckons he will be a hit this season Former Rangers defender Colin Hendry insists the Ibrox dressing room are "fed up" watching Celtic dominate Scottish football. And he insists the new owners 49ers Enterprises will know Russell Martin 's real task is to dethrone the Hoops - not the Champions League clash with Panathinaikos. ‌ Back in 2021, Hendry was left impressed by Martin during his time at MK Dons as he discussed a move for his son Callum from St Johnstone to the English Football League side. ‌ The transfer didn't materialise but the ex-Scotland international has continued to track the progress of Martin - and is delighted to see him in the Ibrox hot seat. But he reckons that the route to Europe's elite competition and a £40million league phase jackpot doesn't matter as much to Martin and the Rangers' support as catching Brendan Rodgers' men. And he reckons he knows exactly how James Tavernier and Co will feel about watching Callum McGregor regularly bring silverware to Celtic Park. Hendry told The Sunday Post: "Russell would have been 34 or 35 at the time and it was his first few weeks in the job at MK Dons. "We met for an hour and I was impressed. He was young, he was enthusiastic and he was honest. Russell showed me that he had something about him. I left the meeting thinking that I was going to follow his career. Duncan Shearer: Winning the Championship is priority, but Ross County cannot let Premier Sports Cup cash chance slip past

Ross County started their competitive season with a bit of whimper – drawing 1-1 with League Two Stranraer in their Premier Sports Cup opener before losing a penalty shoot-out. For full-timers, who will have had plenty of time on the training pitch this summer, and who have aspirations of winning the Championship and bouncing back to the top-flight at the first attempt, a false start against part-timers who finished third-bottom of the SPFL last season has to go down as a disappointment. Don Cowie has, however, brought in nine new signings during the transfer window, including some good experience, and perhaps they just needed a little bit more time. It was no surprise County's goal at Stranraer came via now-Northern Ireland international cap Ronan Hale. Staggies supporters will have taken great encouragement from Hale's interview with The Press and Journal over the weekend, where he appeared to commit his future to the club. I hope he does stay beyond the window, because I've enjoyed watching the boy. I think he's been a fantastic signing for them, and they will need his goals to fulfil their Premiership promotion ambition this season. Ross County's second Premier Sports Cup group B game is another big long trip – this time to League One Queen of the South. Cowie is building his side up for the league season, which is the priority, yes, however, they still need a result in this one. While the manager will be most concerned about getting a shape and a balance to his side at this stage in the year, obviously he wants to qualify out of that League Cup group. Of course he does. County have taken a financial hit with relegation, so they cannot treat the cup as an extension of pre-season. They need to try to progress, because, obviously, the further they progress, the more money they'll get. They're not going to get the riches Chelsea got for winning the Club World Cup on Sunday, but every penny's going to be a prisoner this year for Ross County. Another interesting interview in the P&J in recent days was David Wotherspoon opening up on why he decided to return to Caley Thistle and help them get out of League One this term. The veteran, like several Inverness players, past and present, pointed to the draw of boss Scott Kellacher's magnetic personality – but I imagine the quality of the surface at Caledonian Stadium was also a lure for as gifted a player as the long-time St Johnstone attacker is. Caley Thistle's competitive action gets under way with a Premier Sports Cup home group game against Elgin City on Tuesday, which will be the chance for a positive start in front of what should be a good crowd. But I'm convinced Wotherspoon can drive them to success in the third-tier this term. He's a fantastic player. And he'll play in that division very easily. They just need to add goals – they seem to have everything else in regards to the shape of their team. I would love to see somebody there who can get them 20-plus goals, because I think it will be difficult, given Billy Mckay's coaching commitments and advancing years, for him to be able to do it. He doesn't get in behind defences as often as he used to. But the need to bring in a goalscorer will be being balanced against the financial constraints at ICT. While Alan Savage has taken them out of administration, the last thing they will want is to go down the same road as they did before, with the club almost going to the wall. They have been creative in their business already – like taking a chance on talented Highland League player Jordan Alonge from Forres Mechanics. Alan and chief executive Charlie Christie will be very wary about pushing things too far this summer – but also conscious of doing what they can, alongside the manager, to get Caley Thistle back up the divisions again. Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin will have been pleased with his side's first pre-season outing in front of the Red Army – with 2,200 making the short trip to Cove Rangers to watch the Scottish Cup winners tune up for the new campaign. Despite eight changes, and a switch of goalkeeper, the Dons recorded a clean sheet and a 2-0 win, via goals in each half from Ante Palaversa and Nicky Devlin. These games are not about results, as before you play these pre-season matches, you've basically already decided, injuries notwithstanding, when each substitution will be made. But supporters still don't like seeing their side struggle against perceived lesser opponents. However, Aberdeen came through the bounce game against League One Cove in solid enough fashion. Again this summer, Thelin has made quite a few signings – with more to come, I reckon – while a few faces have also exited Pittodrie. There will still be integration, as well as building up the extra bit of fitness across the squad, to be achieved in further friendlies before the Premiership kick-off in August. I understand there is another closed-doors friendly away from home pencilled in for the Dons this week, before a fantastic clash with Ipswich Town on Friday, July 25th, which will be a great game for everybody – most of all for older fans who remember the early 1980s European meetings between the clubs.
