Rangers' concern can't be Champions League - true marker is vs Celtic
Which, according to former Scotland international Colin Hendry, is to win the Scottish Premiership title back from Celtic.
Rangers will go into a two-legged encounter against the Greek giants, starting next week.
"Russell would have been 34 or 35 at the time and it was his first few weeks in the job at MK Dons," Hendry wrote in The Sunday Post. "We met for an hour and I was impressed.
"He was young, he was enthusiastic and he was honest. Russell showed me that he had something about him. I left the meeting thinking that I was going to follow his career.
"There is no doubt Russell will have learned so much from those four or five months in the EPL (with Southampton). Rangers will get the benefit of that.
"It is not going to be easy for him, that's for sure. It's a massive ask to go to Rangers and turn them into title winners. But that's what he has signed up for.
"He knows the level of expectation and he knows that he will need to deliver. Rangers is a massive football club and they want success. They are fed up seeing Celtic being so dominant.

"The Champions League tie against Panathinaikos will be important, of course it is. But the true marker is what the club does in the Premiership.
"Winning the league is what truly matters. Last season, the team showed that they could beat Celtic. But the true marker is what the club does in the Premiership.
"But it was going to Motherwell, St Mirren and Hibernian. They are the fixtures where they faltered. They need to get that right.
"I found it tough psychologically, with the demands of having to win but not just by one goal. No, the fans wanted us to win by three or four.
"That's what Rangers is about. But that kind of pressure isn't for everyone. Whether a manager or a player, you need to have something special about you to cope with that every week.
"It's been clear in the past decade or so that too many people at Rangers haven't been up to the task and it needs to change."

Anthony Elanga labels Newcastle team-mate Alexander Isak as one of world's best
The 23-year-old winger completed his move to Tyneside last Friday and is united with fellow Sweden international Isak, who has been at the heart of transfer speculation this summer. Liverpool were one of those said to be interested in securing the striker's services, but it is understood Newcastle value him at around £150million in a bid to fend off potential suitors. Although Isak has been surrounded by intense speculation, newcomer Elanga has so far enjoyed working with his international colleague. 'A player of Alex's stature there's always going to be noise around him,' Elanga said. 'For me, he's one of the best players in the world, one of the best attackers in the world. I've played with him at international level so I can say so. 'There's always going to be noise, but at the end of the day he's a Newcastle player right now. I'm just trying to focus on what he's doing in training, showing his qualities and speaking to him every day. 'Whenever I speak to Alex it's always about good things – how my family is, how his family is and that's the first thing he asked me – how my family is – because he sees them all the time when he comes with the national team. 'I always try and focus on the present and the now. Alex being the player he is, one of the best attackers in the world, I think there's always going to be noise around him, but he's the type of player who is always staying focused. Anthony Elanga. Newcastle United player. 😁 — Newcastle United (@NUFC) July 11, 2025 'What he's shown in training is second to none. I'm looking forward to continuing training with him. 'Not just him, but Anthony Gordon who I'm also close with. He's helped me a lot settling in – he came from a different city as well. It's been amazing so far.' Elanga arrives for a reported fee that could eventually amount to £55million and has been thrown straight into action, joining this week's training camp in Austria ahead of pre-season starting on Saturday with a clash against Celtic. Newcastle are aiming to build on last year's stellar campaign which saw them secure their first major domestic silverware in 70 years by winning the Carabao Cup in March, as well as securing a Champions League spot. Elanga is ready to make his impact, suggesting 'anything is possible' this season. Asked how far Newcastle are from challenging for a Premier League title, he replied: 'We just take it game by game, focusing on each day that comes to you, wanting to improve, wanting to learn, wanting to take in information that the gaffer says. Anything is possible. 'The players we have, the coaching staff and adding Martin (Mark) from Midtjylland as set-piece coach. Those little one per cents are only going to make us improve even more. 'We're really on the right track. Having been involved in the sessions this week, I can really sense that feeling of we really want to grab something and win something this year. 'We take it game by game, focus on every session. Anything is possible really.'

Ex-Rangers star wins controversial appeal against historic EFL club – freeing him up for possible shock return to Ibrox
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) JOSH WINDASS has won his controversial appeal against Sheffield Wednesday and consequently been released from his contract. The historic Championship side are in economic turmoil, with Dejphon Chansiri's ownership turning into a farce. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 3 Josh Windass in action for Sheffield Wednesday last season Credit: Alamy 3 Could he make a sensational comeback at Rangers? Credit: PA:Press Association Rangers were able to snap up the club's player of the year last season, Djeidi Gassama, for a cut-price £2.2million as a result of the financial mismanagement going on at Hillsborough. Prior to that deal being sealed, there were reports that Windass could be set for a shock return to Ibrox. Now that he has been freed by the Owls, those rumours have ramped up once again. Both Rangers and Wrexham have been mentioned as potential landing spots for the attacking midfielder, who initially joined Gers from Accrington Stanley in 2016. He scored 19 goals across 73 games for the Light Blues in all competitions before leaving in August 2018 for Wigan Athletic. Over the past few weeks Wednesday's players weren't paid on time and several stars voiced concerns and wanted to quit. Indeed, multiple players went as far as to hand in notice periods while they waited on their wages. Windass submitted a former appeal after being told his contract wouldn't be voided, and it's believed he won his case and as a result the club agreed to release him. Striker Michael Smith has also had his contract waived. A short statement by the club on social media said: "The Owls can confirm that the current contracts of Michael Smith and Josh Windass have been terminated by mutual consent. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane "Sheffield Wednesday thank Michael and Josh for their services and wish them well for the future." Both players will leave Hillsborough with immediate effect. While Smith is 33, Windass is a couple of years younger at 31. Given he probably has a few years of football left in him, he has been linked with a number of clubs - including Rangers. Coventry City, Derby County and Norwich City are among the other clubs who could swoop. If Windass was to re-join the Light Blues it would most likely be as a backup or rotational player. 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Buddhist Monk on The Open leaderboard as he soars at Portrush despite lost luggage and reveals ultimate golf dream
Thai Sadom Kaewkanjana star performing superbly at the 153rd Championship but there's another Major he craves above all else Sadom Kaewkanjana brought his Buddhist monk focus into a flying Open start. The Thai star carded an excellent day-one 68 at Royal Portrush to thrust onto the leaderboard. Kaewkanjana took a break from golf in 2023 to live as a Buddhist monk and practice mediation having come tied-11th the previous year in The Championship at St Andrews. Speaking after his opening round, the 27-year-old said: 'Yeah, it's my responsibility in Thailand, so I think it's a new experience being a Monk. "They help your concentration on the golf course or outside the golf course. It's made me focus. Forget everything outside, just live in the present. So I really enjoy being a Monk. Stay in the present, just stay in my mind. 'Honestly, I play in my country, I haven't played on a links course before. So when I play a links course, it's a new experience for me. I really enjoy to play a links course. It's fun to play with a windy course and tough conditions. Kaewkanjana's effort was even more impressive given his preparations had been hampered by lost luggage on the way to Northern Ireland. He said: 'Finally. I got it back yesterday around 8pm. Just one [suitcase]. Very happy. I travel a lot around Asia. "I like to travel in Asia and maybe in Europe, so I really enjoy to play professional golf, very excited to watch the top players play in the same conditions, same golf course and learn how to play like them.' Kaewkanjana's ultimate golfing dream is to get himself to Augusta one April as he said: 'My goal has been to play in the Masters my whole life. I want to play one time. So to get in the world ranking into the Top 50, that's my goal.'
