Rangers' concern can't be Champions League - true marker is vs Celtic
Which, according to former Scotland international Colin Hendry, is to win the Scottish Premiership title back from Celtic.
Rangers will go into a two-legged encounter against the Greek giants, starting next week.
"Russell would have been 34 or 35 at the time and it was his first few weeks in the job at MK Dons," Hendry wrote in The Sunday Post. "We met for an hour and I was impressed.
"He was young, he was enthusiastic and he was honest. Russell showed me that he had something about him. I left the meeting thinking that I was going to follow his career.
"There is no doubt Russell will have learned so much from those four or five months in the EPL (with Southampton). Rangers will get the benefit of that.
"It is not going to be easy for him, that's for sure. It's a massive ask to go to Rangers and turn them into title winners. But that's what he has signed up for.
"He knows the level of expectation and he knows that he will need to deliver. Rangers is a massive football club and they want success. They are fed up seeing Celtic being so dominant.

"It's been clear in the past decade or so that too many people at Rangers haven't been up to the task and it needs to change."

Newcastle are aiming to build on last year's stellar campaign which saw them secure their first major domestic silverware in 70 years by winning the Carabao Cup in March, as well as securing a Champions League spot. Elanga is ready to make his impact, suggesting 'anything is possible' this season. Asked how far Newcastle are from challenging for a Premier League title, he replied: 'We just take it game by game, focusing on each day that comes to you, wanting to improve, wanting to learn, wanting to take in information that the gaffer says. Anything is possible. 'The players we have, the coaching staff and adding Martin (Mark) from Midtjylland as set-piece coach. Those little one per cents are only going to make us improve even more. 'We're really on the right track. Having been involved in the sessions this week, I can really sense that feeling of we really want to grab something and win something this year. 'We take it game by game, focus on every session. Anything is possible really.'

Credit: PA:Press Association Rangers were able to snap up the club's player of the year last season, Djeidi Gassama, for a cut-price £2.2million as a result of the financial mismanagement going on at Hillsborough. Prior to that deal being sealed, there were reports that Windass could be set for a shock return to Ibrox. Now that he has been freed by the Owls, those rumours have ramped up once again. Both Rangers and Wrexham have been mentioned as potential landing spots for the attacking midfielder, who initially joined Gers from Accrington Stanley in 2016. He scored 19 goals across 73 games for the Light Blues in all competitions before leaving in August 2018 for Wigan Athletic. Over the past few weeks Wednesday's players weren't paid on time and several stars voiced concerns and wanted to quit. Indeed, multiple players went as far as to hand in notice periods while they waited on their wages. Windass submitted a former appeal after being told his contract wouldn't be voided, and it's believed he won his case and as a result the club agreed to release him. Striker Michael Smith has also had his contract waived. A short statement by the club on social media said: "The Owls can confirm that the current contracts of Michael Smith and Josh Windass have been terminated by mutual consent. Thai Sadom Kaewkanjana star performing superbly at the 153rd Championship but there's another Major he craves above all else Sadom Kaewkanjana brought his Buddhist monk focus into a flying Open start. The Thai star carded an excellent day-one 68 at Royal Portrush to thrust onto the leaderboard. Kaewkanjana took a break from golf in 2023 to live as a Buddhist monk and practice mediation having come tied-11th the previous year in The Championship at St Andrews. Speaking after his opening round, the 27-year-old said: 'Yeah, it's my responsibility in Thailand, so I think it's a new experience being a Monk. "They help your concentration on the golf course or outside the golf course. It's made me focus. Forget everything outside, just live in the present. So I really enjoy being a Monk. Stay in the present, just stay in my mind. 'Honestly, I play in my country, I haven't played on a links course before. So when I play a links course, it's a new experience for me. I really enjoy to play a links course. It's fun to play with a windy course and tough conditions. Kaewkanjana's effort was even more impressive given his preparations had been hampered by lost luggage on the way to Northern Ireland. He said: 'Finally. I got it back yesterday around 8pm. Just one [suitcase]. Very happy. I travel a lot around Asia. "I like to travel in Asia and maybe in Europe, so I really enjoy to play professional golf, very excited to watch the top players play in the same conditions, same golf course and learn how to play like them.' Kaewkanjana's ultimate golfing dream is to get himself to Augusta one April as he said: 'My goal has been to play in the Masters my whole life. I want to play one time. So to get in the world ranking into the Top 50, that's my goal.'
