Jamaican police kill 5 men as department criticised for surge in fatal shootings

San Juan(Puerto Rico), Jul 22 (AP) Police in Jamaica say they have filled five men suspected of plotting to kill someone as the department on the Caribbean island comes under fire for a surge in fatal shootings.
Authorities said in a statement late Monday that police were investigating an alleged murder plot that led officers to the location where the men were shot. The shootings occurred Monday afternoon in St Andrew parish, where the capital, Kingston, is located.
'Officers came under heavy gunfire and responded to the threat to their lives," police said.
Authorities noted that no officers were injured, and that they were looking for a sixth man nicknamed 'Bloodstain" who escaped.
Police said that they reported the killings to Jamaica's Independent Commission of Investigations, a government agency created in 2010 to investigate complaints against Jamaica's police, military and corrections officers.
Security forces on the island have long been accused of unlawful killings and using excessive force.
Last week, the commission issued a statement saying that it was concerned 'over the continued rise in fatal shootings by the Security Forces, in particular fatalities arising from planned police operations, as well as the persistent failure to prioritize the deployment of body-worn cameras." It noted that so far this year, Jamaican security forces have fatally shot 177 people, compared with 80 in the same period last year, representing a 121 per cent increase.
From July 18, 2024, to July 18 of this year, forces have killed 288 people. The commission noted that police didn't use body cameras in any of those incidents.
'A recurring theme in the shooting incidents show that weapons are alleged to have been pointed at officers, but in the absence of third-party eyewitnesses or video evidence, investigators are unable to verify or justify the use of lethal force," the commission said. (AP) RD RD

Hyderabad: Six IT professionals arrested for drug consumption at birthday party, LSD blots, hashish seized in raid
The Excise State Task Force (STF) in Hyderabad on Sunday informed that they have arrested six IT professionals for alleged drug consumption at a birthday party at a farmhouse near the city, reported PTI. The Excise State Task Force, who acted on specific intelligence, raided the farmhouse in Chevella on Saturday night and seized LSD blots, 20.21 grams of hashish, liquor bottles, and three cars, PTI quoted an official release as saying. Adding more, the release said that all attendees were tested using drug detection kits and were found positive for drug consumption. Following the raid, six individuals, all employed in the IT sector, were taken into custody. However, two others, including the farmhouse owner, are absconding. In the meantime, a case has been registered, and further investigation is underway. Earlier on Tuesday, the Prohibition and Excise Department's State Task Force conducted a route watch and busted the drugs party in Kondapur area. They arrested nine people for allegedly planning to organise a rave party at an apartment in Kondapur area. The STF team has seized 2.080 kg of dry ganja, 50 grams of OG Kush (hybrid ganja), among other narcotic substances and LSD blot papers from the possession of the accused, which were meant for the rave party, besides six vehicles, the official said. According to the report, a case has been registered against 11 people. Nine accused have been arrested, while two others are absconding. Also, the Pune Police arrested seven persons after busting a "drug party" following a raid at an apartment on Sunday and seized narcotics, hookah set ups and liquor. The raid was conducted around 3.30 AM on Sunday and a "drug party" was busted at the studio apartment, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Nikhil Pingle said at a press conference. During the raid and subsequent search, the police seized 2.7 grams of a cocaine-like substance, 70 gm of a ganja-like substance, a hookah pot, various hookah flavours, and liquor and beer bottles, Pingle said.

ED arrests ex-Axis Mutual Fund manager in 'front-running' case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Viresh Joshi, a former chief trader and fund manager of Axis Mutual Fund, in connection with a 'front-running' case involving alleged cheating of investors to the tune of ₹ 200 crore. Joshi was taken into custody on Saturday under the anti-money laundering law and has been remanded to ED custody until August 8 by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, reported PTI. The case of front-running involves unethical and illegal practice in the securities market in which brokers or traders execute orders for their personal benefit by using advance knowledge of pending client orders. This malpractice undermines market integrity and puts other investors at a disadvantage. The federal probe agency's investigation stems from an FIR registered by the Mumbai Police in December 2024, alleging that Joshi, while serving as a fund manager at Axis Mutual Fund, "exploited" confidential information on the trades to be executed on behalf of the fund house. He is accused of pre-emptively trading stocks to generate substantial "illicit" gains, thereby cheating the investors of Axis Mutual Fund, which holds assets under management of more than ₹ 2 lakh crore, the ED told PTI. The ED launched searches in the case on August 1, across multiple locations in Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, Ludhiana, Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Bhuj and Kolkata. The agency stated that, "the search operations were part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal profits made by certain entities/persons by indulging in front-running trade activities in scrips traded by Axis Mutual Fund from 2018 to 2021.' According to ED, "The accused had utilised a terminal in Dubai to punch the front-running trade orders through mule trading accounts obtained from various brokers. Other than the case involving Joshi, the investigation has further revealed that many other traders/brokers have also misused the advance inputs on Axis Mutual Fund trades to indulge in front-running, generating illicit trade profits, which are deemed 'nothing but proceeds of crime," the agency alleged. The agency estimates the illicit funds generated by various traders/brokers to exceed ₹ 200 crore, with potential for this sum to be much higher, according to a news report.
