Director RS Prasanna says 'Sitaare Zameen Par' is an 'honest film'

Khaleej Times04-06-2025
Director RS Prasanna has shared his excitement and insights about his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, which stars Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and actress Genelia Deshmukh in the lead.
The film, set to release on June 20, 2025, has already generated buzz, especially after the release of its trailer in May.
Sitaare Zameen Par is a sequel to Khan's 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. The film faced criticism for perceived similarities with the international film Champions, a remake of the Spanish drama Campeones.
Yet, Prasanna remains confident in his film's unique approach and powerful message.
"... the core emotion comes from Taare Zameen Par. The thought and the mindset began with that film," he said. "Hopefully, this picture will take that thought and mindset in a new direction."
The director revealed how the idea of Sitaare Zameen Par came about, recounting a personal memory from 2007 when Aamir Khan won the Best Debut Director award for Taare Zameen Par.
"As we began pre-production, I kept referencing Taare Zameen Par," he shared, adding, "Aamir Sir and I often discussed scenes from that film. One day, he suggested that we view Sitaare Zameen Par as an extension of that emotion. It was a natural progression."
Sitaare Zameen Par casts actors with special needs, including individuals with Down's syndrome and autism.
"...They're the true heroes of this film," he said. "We couldn't have made this film without them."
The director elaborated on the challenges and joys of working with these exceptional actors.
"It was not difficult to direct them. They were the ones who directed us," Prasanna admitted, adding, "They taught us how to interact with them. All we needed to do was guide them on technical aspects like camera angles and lighting. Their acting was natural, real, and powerful. They made the set a better place."
Prasanna also highlighted the role of casting directors Tess Joseph and Anmol Ahuja in the lengthy audition process, which included over 2,500 auditions and workshops.
Prasanna was all praise for Aamir Khan, describing him as not just a star but also an ideal collaborator. "There is something called Aamir magic," the director said.
The film, scheduled to release on June 20, 2025, follows the story of a basketball coach who works with a group of individuals with intellectual disabilities. ANI

Philippines allocates Php192.7-million aid as thousands displaced by Kanlaon Volcano unrest

The Philippine government has provided more than Php192.7 million worth of humanitarian assistance to communities affected by the continued unrest of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported on Sunday. The aid comes as thousands of residents across 30 barangays have been forced to flee their homes due to the volcano's activity. As of the DSWD's 6.20am update on July 6, a total of 94,228 individuals have been affected. Of these, 5,940 people are currently staying in evacuation centres, while 10,621 others have taken temporary shelter elsewhere. Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating magmatic unrest. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the emission of 1,590 tons of sulfur dioxide on July 5, with plumes rising up to 650 meters high. The agency on July 6 also recorded 10 volcanic earthquakes. Authorities have ordered evacuations within the 6km permanent danger zone (PDZ) around the volcano due to the threat of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), ashfall, rockfalls, and possible lahar flows during heavy rains. At least 5,031 homes have been reported partially damaged. Phivolcs continues to monitor the volcano closely, and civil aviation authorities were advised to avoid flying near the summit. Meanwhile, residents are urged to remain alert, wear masks or use damp cloths to protect against ash inhalation, and prioritise the safety of vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, pregnant women, and those with respiratory conditions.

The Indian connection to Brad Pitt's ‘F1: The Movie' that everyone's talking about

In his latest film, F1: The Movie, Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt introduced car racing at the highest level to a wider audience, and something else equally distinct. A style of Indian weaving that's now grabbing more attention: the Tangaliya. At a behind-the-scenes shoot , Pitt sported an indigo-coloured Tangaliya shirt, by the fashion label 11.11/ The organic cotton shirt was chosen by the costume designer Julian Day to lend authenticity to Pitt's character of Sonny Hayes, an F1 racer past his prime who leads a struggling team back to the podium. The Fight Club actor paired the shirt with denims and the look is absolutely droolworthy. Frankly, we can't have enough of it, either! View this post on Instagram A post shared by 11.11 / eleven eleven (@1111clothing) Julian Day, in an interview to the Indian media outlet News18, explained that the selection of the 11.11/eleven eleven piece was deliberate and driven by the narrative of the film. 'Its soft indigo tones helped create the right palette for him," Day was quoted as saying by News18. 'Indian brands are so hot at the moment. Their use of natural fabrics and dyes and how they are handcrafted play so well in this current environment." That cool quotient, however, comes with a lot of effort. The Tangaliya weave, native to Surendranagar, in the Saurashtra region of the west Indian state of Gujarat, is labour-intensive and is at least seven centuries old. It involves twisting threads of contrasting hues around the fabric's yarn that gives it a distinct look of raised dots. Garments made with it, including shirts, shawls and skirts, are sturdy and are traditionally used to depict a variety of motifs. The Indian government has granted the weave a geographical indicator, or GI tag, implying that products from originating from a particular region possess a superior quality. 11.11/eleven eleven piece is founded by Mia Morikawa, a graphic design graduate from Central Saint Martin's University of the Arts, London, and Shani Himanshu, Master's in Fashion Design from Domus Academy, Milan. F1: The Movie, led by a stellar cast comprising Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon and Damson Idris, roared to the top of the global box office over its release weekend, minting around $150 million (Dh550.9 million).
