You snooze, you lose - Evenepoel admits team error
The Belgian, considered one of the main general classification contenders, admitted his Soudal Quick-Step team misjudged the situation as the bunch relaxed after an early climb, only to be surprised by Visma's acceleration in crosswinds 17km from the finish line.
"I think after the climb it was quite relaxed in the bunch and we believed it was going to go to the sprint — a big mistake by us," Evenepoel said.
"It was a pretty unfortunate situation for us today. We had this marked as the last chance of an echelon (a split in crosswinds) and we kind of fell asleep because of the relaxed environment, especially after the first 100 kilometres."
Olympic champion Evenepoel, who finished third overall last year, remained upbeat about his chances.
"Tomorrow will be an explosive stage, and Tuesday will also be a tricky one — there are many more chances," he said.
"It's still very long, and the timing was stupid, but I'm already happy I could stay on the bike. I think the most disappointing thing is that we couldn't go for the stage win with (teammate and sprint specialist) Tim Merlier."

Miedema's 100th goal fires Dutch to 3-0 Euros win over Wales
LUCERNE, Switzerland :Vivianne Miedema scored her 100th international goal to send the Netherlands on their way to a 3-0 win over Wales in their Group D opener at the Women's European Championship at the Allmend Stadion in Lucerne on Saturday. Wales came into their debut match at a major tournament as underdogs against the 2017 champions and, after frustrating the Dutch for long periods of the opening half, Miedema's milestone strike before the break ended the Welsh resistance. The Welsh were pinned back in their own half for long stretches, often making things difficult for themselves with some wayward passing but also regularly putting their bodies on the line in the box to block the constant Dutch danger. Jill Roord hit two powerful efforts in the first half, one saved by Wales keeper Olivia Clark, the other thundering back off the upright, while the Welsh intent was underlined by Lily Woodham picking up a booking inside 25 minutes for time-wasting. Wales looked like hanging on until the interval but, deep into added time, Miedema struck a curling shot from outside the area which sailed into the far top corner, a goal worthy of the captain's milestone in her 126th international appearance. The Dutch doubled their lead less than three minutes after the break, with Danielle van de Donk laying a pass back to Victoria Pelova in the box who blasted a shot through the legs of defender Gemma Evans and beyond the keeper. Roord again hit the woodwork, as the Netherlands almost added a third immediately, and they did find the net again in the 57th minute. Musiala suffers suspected broken ankle in Bayern clash with PSG
ATLANTA :Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala sustained a suspected broken ankle during the first half of their Club World Cup quarter-final against Paris St Germain on Saturday. The 22-year-old Germany international was injured in added time before the break following a collision in PSG's penalty area. As Musiala challenged defender William Pacho for the ball, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inadvertently rolled over Musiala's left ankle, twisting it at an alarming angle. Bayern's medical team rushed on to the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly shaken, dropped to the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala who was carried off the field on a stretcher.
