Bulgarian nationalists protest over government plans to adopt euro currency
The anti-euro rally came four days before the Balkan country is expected to receive the green light from Brussels to enter the eurozone.
Demonstrators in Sofia carried flags of the pro-Russian Vazrazhdane party and a huge banner that read 'The battle for the Bulgarian lev is the last battle for Bulgaria'.

An increased police presence kept the protest peaceful.
Bulgaria joined the European Union in 2007 and remains one of its poorest members, plagued by years of instability which has fuelled Euroscepticism among its 6.4 million citizens.
Disinformation campaigns from home and abroad have added fears of economic changes that could bring more poverty.
President Rumen Radev encouraged the anti-euro voices by proposing earlier this month a referendum on the currency, citing public concerns over inflation and purchasing power.
The proposal was turned down by the pro-European majority in parliament, which accused him of acting in favour of Moscow with his last-minute attempt to sabotage the euro adoption, which is aimed at deepening European integration amid growing geopolitical tensions.

Overtime will be ramped up for enforcement teams and more funding for interventions across Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia to disrupt smuggling routes. Ministers are battling to drive down small boat crossings, which have exceeded 25,000 so far this year - a record for this point in the summer. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said: "For six years, the small boat smuggling gangs were allowed to embed their criminal trade along our coast, and have shown a ruthless ability to adapt their tactics and maximise their profits, no matter how many lives they put at risk. They must not be allowed to get away with this vile crime. 'That is why this government has developed a serious and comprehensive plan to dismantle their business model, from disrupting their supply chains across the European continent to clamping down on their illegal working operations here in the UK." Ms Cooper will unveil plans in the autumn to overhaul the appeals system to slash the spiralling backlog and reduce the number of asylum seekers in hotels. As of March, there were 50,976 outstanding appeals - nearly double the number in 2024 and seven times higher than in 2023. The Home Secretary wants decisions to be made in weeks rather than months, as the average wait to hear appeals is 54 weeks. She told the Sunday Times: 'We need a major overhaul of the appeal [process] and that's what we are going to do in the autumn … if we speed up the decision-making appeal system and also then keep increasing returns, we hope to be able to make quite a big reduction in the overall numbers in the asylum system, because that is the best way to actually restore order and control.' It comes amid a wave of anti-immigration protests as asylum hotels become a flashpoint for community tensions Demonstrators clashed with police outside a hotel housing migrants in north London on Saturday, while hundreds of people took part in a demo organised by far-right group Britain First in Manchester. On Sunday, the police watchdog warned there is "every possibility" of a repeat of the unrest that broke out last summer in the wake of the Southport murders. His Majesty's Chief Inspector of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services Sir Andy Cooke said the "tools that amplified hatred last summer remain largely unchanged and unregulated". He said: "The police service should not be caught off-guard again. There is every possibility that similar violence could reoccur. "Online misinformation continues to spread. Russian TikTokkers 'arrested for taking selfies outside oil depot inferno'

Footage circulating online shows two young women posing metres away from the inferno, allegedly caused by drone debris hitting a fuel tank. The pair have since been identified as Dasha Vladimirovna, 21, and Karina Evgenyevna, 19 – who have since been detained for accidentally exposing Vladimir Putin's failures to defend Russia. Flames are seen raging behind the two, with pillars of smoke rising into the sky, after the overnight attack. Dasha and Karina do not appear shocked – in the video, they are rapping to the track Crimson Dawn by singer Endshpil, a famous Russian rapper. Before they were identified, police had issued an appeal to members of the piublic, saying: 'During Internet monitoring, a publication was found of two girls filming a video against the backdrop of a fire in Sochi. 'The police have initiated an investigation, measures are being taken to identify the girls, and their actions will be legally assessed.' It was later confirmed that Dasha and Karina had been detained, and there were calls from pro-war outlets for them to issue a public apology over the stunt close to Sochi Airport. Police have not shared the real reason for their arrest, but it is likely that it is the potential glamourising of a Ukrainian strike on Putin's favourite Black Sea resort. The Kremlin has been taking an increasingly hard line against social media stunts seen as highlighting Ukraine's successes in the war. Ukraine's attack is seen as one of the most symbolically and strategically significant ones – deep within Russian territory since the start of the full-scale invasion. The oil depot sustained a direct hit, causing the explosion of a 2,000 cubic metre fuel reservoir and sparking a fire visible across Sochi. More than 120 firefighters and 35 emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene, and operations at the nearby airport were suspended as a precaution. Despite the official account from the governor of Krasnodar, Veniamin Kondratyev, describing the incident as a result of falling drone fragments, widespread footage circulating online paints a starkly different picture. More Trending Videos captured by local residents show towering plumes of black smoke, an orange-glowing night sky, and the sound of drones overhead. In one video, a panicked resident exclaims: 'It's flying, again! Right to the airport!' Moments later, another voice shouts, 'It's a tragedy! Everything's burning!'
