Bitcoin just hit $100,000 for the first time in 3 months
The top crypto hit an intraday high of $101,370, the highest level since early February.
A number of tailwinds have boosted the token recently, but broadly it has been moving in line with other risk assets like stocks, as markets settle down after April's historic bout of volatility stemming from tariffs.
Similar to stocks, bitcoin gained on Tuesday on news that the White House had reached a trade agreement with the UK—a positive sign that could help unwind last month's tariff uncertainty and reignite risk appetite among investors.
Analysts have also suggested that April's trade chaos may positioned bitcoin to climb as tariffs diminish the appeal fo safe havens like the US dollar and Treasurys.
Standard Chartered said that inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs have surged to $5.3 billion over the past three weeks, suggesting that demand has ballooned since mid April.
Meanwhile, New Hampshire and Arizona gave crypto bulls more to be excited about, introducing the country's first crypto reserves this week.
But to Zack Shapiro, head of policy at the Bitcoin Policy Institute, the impact of state crypto reserves is likely to be small compared to Wall Street's soaring appetite.
Institutional interest is helping send bitcoin higher, as companies have entered something on an "arms race" to acquire a meaningful stake, he told BI. Strategy, at the forefront of this effort, is now funding a plan to spend $84 billion on more bitcoin acquisitions, Standard Chartered wrote.
Given these factors, bitcoin should make new highs this quarter, the bank's global head of digital assets research wrote on Thursday. The bank has predicted the token to hit $120,000 in the second quarter but said in the note that the target might be too low.
But others think that while progress on trade gives bitcoin fuel for more gains in the near term, heightened volatility is still a risk for traders as tariff uncertainty stays high.
"Plus, at the moment, BTC is rallying on low volume, which is a recipe for short-term volatility," Puckrin said.

Trump Media buys $2 billion in bitcoin as it pursues crypto treasury strategy
Trump Media and Technology Group, the social media company owned by President Trump, said it has bought about $2 billion in bitcoin and related securities as it remodels itself as an investment firm. Trump Media, which owns the Truth Social app, announced in May that it planned to raise $2.5 billion to buy bitcoin, with the goal of creating a reserve of the cryptocurrency. The $2 billion bitcoin purchase is part of the company's "bitcoin treasury plan," Trump Media CEO Devin Nunes said in a news release on Monday. Mr. Trump, the largest investor in Trump Media, has increasingly focused on cryptocurrencies both through his private businesses and his administration. The company's $2 billion bitcoin purchase comes as Trump Media looks to roll out a range investment products, including a plan to sell exchange-traded funds, or ETFs. The bitcoin purchase will "help ensure our Company's financial freedom, help protect us against discrimination by financial institutions and will create synergies with the utility token we're planning to introduce across the Truth Social ecosphere," Nunes said in a statement. The company also said it has set aside $300 million for an "options acquisition strategy for bitcoin-related securities." Trump Media said it plans to continue acquiring bitcoin. Shares of Trump Media rose $1.04, or 5.6%, to $19.71 in Monday morning trading. The stock has declined 42% ths year. For the first quarter, Trump Media reported revenue of roughly $821,000, up from $770,000 in the year-ago period, a regulatory filing shows. The company reported an operating loss for the quarter of $39.5 million, down from $98.3 million from a year ago. A crypto treasury strategy involves buying and holding cryptocurrencies, similar to how companies may invest in more traditional assets like bonds to provide them with financial flexibility. The best-known advocate of this approach is billionaire Michael Saylor, who runs a software company called Strategy (formerly known as MicroStrategy). It owns 607,000 bitcoins – worth more than $72 billion at today's bitcoin price — making it the largest public bitcoin treasury company, according to Saylor's company uses a variety of strategies, such as selling shares or issuing debt, to keep expanding its bitcoin holdings. As the digital currency's price has soared to more than $118,000, shooting up 74% over the last year alone, Strategy's stock price has followed, surging more than 3,500% since 2020. That success has also spawned many imitators, while the White House invited him to its Digital Assets Summit earlier this year. The Trump administration is planning a new U.S. "strategic reserve" of crypto assets. Last week, Mr. Trump signed the GENIUS Act, the first major law governing digital currency. "For the past five years, the only thing better than Bitcoin is More Bitcoin," Saylor wrote in a July 17 social media Associated Press contributed to this report.

Exclusive: Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin has blunt response to Bitcoin treasury firms
Exclusive: Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin has blunt response to Bitcoin treasury firms originally appeared on TheStreet. Consensys chief executive officer and Ethereum co‑founder Joseph Lubin believes the next corporate balance sheet craze will revolve around Ether, not Bitcoin. Speaking in an interview with TheStreet Roundtable, Lubin said he took inspiration from Michael Saylor's well‑publicized Bitcoin strategy: 'We figured that we could probably do an even better job for Ether because Ether is a productive and yielding asset.' Lubin now chairs SharpLink Gaming (SBET), a Minneapolis‑based sports betting tech firm, that has pivoted into what he calls an Ether treasury company. SharpLink first raised money through a private placement and 'made an initial purchase of 425 million Ether, which we staked immediately,' Lubin said, adding that the holding has since grown to roughly 280,000 Ether through an at‑the‑market equity program. Every new dollar of equity, he explained, is converted straight into Ether and staked the same day. 'People buy SBET because they can sit on their hands from there on and be assured they will get the benefit of having more and more ether accumulated with respect to each one of their shares,' he said, describing the pitch as 'Ether concentration.' Why Ether over Bitcoin Unlike Bitcoin, Ether can be staked natively for yield and restaked into newer protocols such as EigenLayer. Lubin said SharpLink works with Galaxy Digital and ParaFi Capital to craft strategies that are 'prudent with respect to risk but also do quite significant yielding,' aiming to outcompete future Ether exchange‑traded funds on payout. Regulation, once the biggest obstacle, has flipped, according to Lubin. 'For a few years, the United States government was trying to kill Ethereum. Those are fortunately behind us,' he said. With 'the new SEC and the new administration,' he expects enterprises and traditional finance to adopt tokens, decentralized finance and on‑chain assets en masse, driving transaction volume — and Ether burn — higher. Ethereum's 'broadband moment,' as Lubin put it, will be reinforced by Layer‑2 networks such as Consensys‑backed Linea, whose forthcoming token Lubin teased as a 'game changer' that will loop economic value back to Ethereum's base layer. How high could Ether go? Lubin declined to name a number but argued that as corporate treasuries, staking protocols and everyday applications compete for a finite supply, price is likely to find a new equilibrium at much higher levels. Figma IPO could value design software maker at $16 billion
Design software company Figma on Monday published an updated prospectus for its initial public offering. The company said it expects to sell about 37 million shares at $25 to $28 each. That would generate as much as $1 billion in proceeds, between the company and selling shareholders. The IPO could value Figma, led by co-founder Dylan Field, a fully diluted valuation of $14.6 billion to $16.4 billion. Field plans to sell 2.35 million shares, which could be worth as much as $65.8 million. In a 2024 tender offer, investors valued the company at $12.5 billion. In 2022, Adobe had agreed to acquire Figma for $20 billion, but the deal was scrapped after regulators objected. The flow of technology companies joining U.S. exchanges has slowed since late 2021. Concerns over inflation and a recession made some investors less interested in backing fast-growing but money-losing companies. But a few technology stocks have become available in recent months. CoreWeave went public in March, and Circle and Chime shares started trading in June. Figma filed to go public on July 1, announcing plans to trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "FIG." On Monday, it provided preliminary results for the second quarter, showing $9.0 million to $12.0 million in operating income on $247 million to $250 million in revenue. That would imply year-over-year revenue growth of 39% at the low end and 41% at the high end. Growth in the first quarter exceeded 46%. During the second quarter, Figma added clients and expanded business with existing ones. The company's operating margin would be ticking up to 4% to 5%, up from 3% in the same quarter a year ago, based on the preliminary results. Figma said it has authorized the issuance of "blockchain common stock" in the form of "blockchain-based tokens." So far, though, Figma said it isn't planning to issue this type of stock. In July, Figma disclosed investments in a stablecoin and a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund. Mike Krieger, a co-founder of Instagram who is now chief product officer of artificial intelligence model developer Anthropic, has joined the board. Luis von Ahn, co-founder and CEO of Duolingo, is also joining the board, according to the filing.
