SMEs still lagging in digitalisation journey, says Gobind
The Digital Minister said that to address the issue, the ministry is working hard through initiatives like the Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI), recently launched by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, to help SMEs accelerate the adoption of digital technology in their operations.
'The government has also set aside RM50mil for digital matching grants for SMEs and digital grants for vendors.
'Global technology companies based in Malaysia, such as Microsoft and Alibaba Cloud, are working closely with the government to assist SMEs through multiple programmes,' he said in his keynote address at the CTOS SME Biz Day 2025 yesterday.
Gobind said the government is also committed to ensuring that SMEs are prioritised in navigating current geopolitical challenges with funds allocated for this purpose, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Monday.
He said the government's initiatives have always been designed to provide SMEs with the resources, knowledge and support they need to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
'Our vision is to create a digitally empowered Malaysia, where every business, regardless of size, can thrive in our national digital ecosystem.
'We are committed to fostering an environment that supports innovation, digital adoption and, ultimately, building up Malaysia as a strong digital nation,' he said, Bernama reported.
On Monday, Anwar announced that the government has agreed to increase government guarantees under the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme by RM1bil to assist SMEs affected by the recent United States' reciprocal tariff announcement in securing loans from commercial banks.
Additionally, another RM50mil will be allocated to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation to expedite efforts for SMEs to explore new markets through participation in international trade expos and exhibitions, as well as facilitating business matching with foreign buyers.

Germany's Merz praises EU-US trade deal despite industry backlash
BERLIN: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has welcomed the newly announced trade deal between the European Union and the United States, describing it as a measure to prevent unnecessary trade conflicts. The agreement, which imposes 15-percent tariffs on most EU exports, has drawn mixed reactions, with industries expressing concerns over its economic impact. Merz stated, 'We have thus managed to preserve our fundamental interests, even if I would have wished for more relief in transatlantic trade.' The deal notably reduces tariffs for Germany's automotive sector from 27.5 percent, providing relief to one of the country's key industries. However, Germany's industrial and business groups have voiced strong opposition. The BDI federation warned of 'considerable negative repercussions,' calling the agreement a 'fatal signal' for transatlantic economic relations. The chemical trade association VCI described the tariffs as 'too high,' while the BGA exporters association labelled it a 'painful compromise' that poses an 'existential threat' to businesses. Economist Clemens Faust of the IFO institute criticised the deal as a 'humiliation for the EU,' highlighting the perceived power imbalance in negotiations. Despite these concerns, Merz pledged full support for the European Commission in finalising the agreement's details. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil cautiously endorsed the deal as a 'good first step,' adding that its economic and employment effects would be closely monitored. - Reuters

Gobind: Generative AI could unlock RM479b for Malaysia's economy, but must be a ‘force for good'
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Widespread adoption of AI by businesses and workers in Malaysia is set to accelerate the nation's economic growth across various sectors, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. In a statement today, Gobind said that Generative AI alone is projected to unlock up to USD113.4 billion in productive capacity for the country. Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 in Shanghai, China, yesterday, he underscored the shared responsibility of countries worldwide to ensure that AI continues to be a force for good. 'In this artificial intelligence (AI)-shaped era, collaboration is essential. Only through shared commitment, innovation and vigilance can we ensure that the digital world remains a force for good. 'The overarching goal is to bridge the digital divide among nations and enhance digital collaboration to ensure the development and governance of emerging technologies benefit humanity,' he said. Gobind said Malaysia welcomes the outcome document of the Global AI Governance Action Plan, and highlighted domestic efforts, including the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO) last December to coordinate and drive the country's AI agenda. As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Gobind said that the country is spearheading the ASEAN AI Safety Network and leading the conversation on AI safety. The Network, according to Gobind, will act as ASEAN's regional platform for AI safety, facilitating best practice exchanges, research collaboration, standards development and responsible AI adoption. 'By driving innovation, enhancing decision-making and optimising the use of precious resources, AI is not just changing industries — it is accelerating global development. 'And in doing so, it reminds us that the technologies of tomorrow must be built together, across borders, with a shared vision for a better world,' he said. Gobind also said Malaysia will host two major global events this year, the inaugural ASEAN AI Malaysia Summit in August and the Smart Cities World Expo Kuala Lumpur in September, aimed at bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and academics to discuss AI, innovation and digital transformation. — Bernama
