Woman is arrested after five-day-old baby found decapitated and dismembered in rubbish bin in Spain
Details of the sickening crime first emerged last week when detectives launched an urgent appeal to find the mother.
Doctors confirmed the little girl had been born alive and was just five days old when she was killed, likely with a knife.
And on Tuesday Civil Guard officers in Madrid arrested a woman born in Ecuador.
Reports this afternoon said police were searching her house in Vallecas, a working-class neighbourhood in the capital.
The suspect, who has been taken into custody, remains unnamed but has been described locally as a married woman with children.
The police mission to find the person responsible for the horrific crime, named Operation Natal, was launched on December 12 when a shocked recycling centre worker in Loeches, near Madrid, found the baby's remains in several plastic bags.
The operation aims to 'get justice' for the dead infant.
A specialist dog assisted cops in the investigations at the waste plant and sniffed out several remains of the newborn in the area.
Tests revealed the girl had been delivered successfully before being decapitated with a knife and her body parts stuffed into bin bags.
DNA tests carried out on the corpse revealed she was of Latin American or subtropical origin, suggesting her mother would have been from a Central or South American country.
In light of this, the Civil Guard asked for citizen collaboration in case any resident of Vallecas knew an immigrant woman who had been pregnant during the last months of last year.
Detectives believed her remains reached the Loeches plant after being thrown into a container in the Vallecas neighbourhood close to the M-30 motorway.
The Civil Guard, as part of Operation Natal, last week asked for the public's help in identifying a woman they estimated to be aged around 40 who had been pregnant during the last months of last year.
A police spokesman said at the time: 'From the investigations carried out so far, it has been possible to determine that the remains would correspond to a female baby and that she was born alive.
'There are indications that would point to her death being of a violent nature.
'We are seeking the public's help in clarifying this criminal act and asking anyone who could have any information of interest to contact us.'

NEW YORK, July 2 (Reuters) - The jury in Sean "Diddy" Combs' trial will continue deliberations on Wednesday, a day after reaching a verdict on four of the five counts the music mogul faces in his sex trafficking case but failing to agree on a racketeering conspiracy charge. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian said on Tuesday the jury had reached a verdict on the two counts of sex trafficking and two of transportation to engage in prostitution faced by Combs, a former billionaire known for elevating hip-hop in American culture. The judge did not reveal the verdict on those counts. Subramanian instructed the 12-member jury to keep deliberating about the racketeering count after the panel sent him a note indicating jurors had "unpersuadable opinions on both sides." Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to all five felony counts. He faces a mandatory 15-year prison sentence if convicted of sex trafficking. A guilty verdict on either that charge or the racketeering conspiracy count could result in up to a life sentence. Jurors must be unanimous to reach a verdict on any count. Simone Mariella, 28, said her partner, Scott, was taking part in a supercar rally in Barcelona, Spain, when two crooks on an electric scooter targeted him on June 23. The 33-year-old was sitting stationary at traffic lights in the Lamborghini Aventador. Scott had his expensive timepiece pinched before the thief and his accomplice zoomed off on the e-scooter. He was unable to chase after them as he was stuck behind a similar supercar. Sarah Montgomery: Man in court charged with pregnant mother's murder
A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of pregnant mother-of-two Sarah Montgomery, 27, was found unconscious and seriously injured inside her home in Donaghadee, County Down, on Saturday afternoon before being pronounced Hughes, 28, from Ardglen Place in north Belfast, is also charged with child stood in the dock at Newtownards Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where a detective chief inspector told the court he could connect the accused to the charges. No bail application was made on his Judge Conor Heaney confirmed the case would come before the court again on 30 July.
