East Kilbride business wins NHS Scotland contract for 'life-changing' stoma care product
A vital NHS Scotland contract has been secured by a Lanarkshire business for its 'life-changing' stoma bag product.
Confidence Plus was founded in East Kilbride in 2019 by Anne Inch and Lisa Crombie, who created ConfiPlus Stoma Pockets, with support from Business Gateway.
The discrete and easy-to-use stoma bag accompaniment is designed to contain leakage and reduce worry and discomfort. Suitable for use with most stoma bags, the product helps minimise both the physical and mental impact of stoma care.
By improving comfort, security and dignity, ConfiPlus Stoma Pockets empower users to regain their independence and enjoy greater freedom in everyday life.

The product was created by ostomate (a person who has undergone ostomy surgery), Anne Inch, for her late husband Iain, who had an Ileostomy (the surgical procedure that creates a stoma) and suffered from constant leakage during frequent stays in the hospital.
Anne wanted to find a new way to contain leakage and reduce the impact of the stoma.
The first version was made on her sewing machine and she then went on to make more for other patients in her husband's ward after being encouraged by the nurses who saw the impact it had on Iain.
The product first went on sale in the UK in December 2020 and are now made by a medical device manufacturer in Britain, and the team has had support from the Medical Device Manufacturing Centre working in partnership Heriot Watt University and the University of Dundee.
At an early stage in 2019, Anne contacted her former colleague Lisa to ask about getting involved when she started Confidence Plus and Lisa was happy to support. They've been working together to build the business since then.
With just 48 hours to prepare a high-stakes NHS Scotland tender for Stoma Supplies, Lisa turned to Business Gateway for urgent support.
Adviser Debbie Dawkins provided intensive one-to-one guidance and quickly introduced the team to a procurement expert. A two-hour procurement session with consultant Judith Stewart helped improve the bid and ensure it met the robust NHS procurement standards.
Lisa Crombie, co-founder of Confidence Plus Ltd, said: 'When I say I couldn't have done this without Debbie's help, I mean it. She went above and beyond, and we're so grateful for her support and the introductions she made to Judith and Zoe.
"After speaking with Judith, I realised how far off the mark we were. Without her guidance, our tender simply wouldn't have met NHS Scotland's requirements. This success has been game-changing, not just for the business, but for the people we aim to support through ConfiPlus.'
To comply with strict sustainability requirements, Anne and Lisa also accessed three days of Net Zero consultancy support through Business Gateway and developed a Carbon Management Plan, Environmental Policy and Carbon Management Policy demonstrating Confidence Plus's commitment to sustainability and responsible innovation.
ConfiPlus won the NHS Scotland contract, bringing the product one step closer to helping thousands of stoma users across the UK.
With continued support from Business Gateway and other partners, Confidence Plus is now exploring further opportunities to scale and bring its life-changing products to more stoma users across the UK and beyond. The pair have recently launched the business in the US to help stoma patients there too.

Weighing 21.3g with a 0.6-inch screen, it's a smaller, more lightweight alternative. It can't, however, be used to make phone calls or send and receive messages. The Samsung Galaxy Watch7 is also available through Sky for £9 per month on a 36-month contract. It features health and exercise monitoring, and can be used to make and receive calls and messages, but is not compatible with Apple devices. It features a 1.3 inch screen, and weighs 28.8g, and runs up to 30 hours on one charge, or 40 hours on standby. One reviewer said: If you're looking for a budget-friendly smartwatch that covers all the basics like: fitness tracking, sleep, steps, heart rate, and phone alerts; this is a great pick. "It's stylish enough for both men and women, and is reliable enough to become part of your daily routine. I like this alternative to an Apple or Samsung watch, if you don't have one, and you like monitoring your vitals while working out." Another happy customer wrote: "I've been using the Soudorv Smartwatch for a couple of days now, and I'm honestly impressed by how much it offers at such an affordable price. The display is large, bright, and easy to read - even outdoors. "It tracks my steps accurately, monitors my heart rate and sleep quality, and even reminds me to move if I've been sitting too long. The sleep tracker has been helpful in giving me a better understanding of my rest patterns." Scottish Government misses key skin cancer quality targets
A total of 10 of 15 Quality Performance Indicators (QPIs) were met in the last year, with persistent challenges in meeting targets related to pathology, imaging and systemic therapy, according to the latest Public Health Scotland data. The data also shows that the limited availability of pathology services and operating theatres in Scotland is causing delays in diagnosing and treating skin cancer. READ MORE: NHS 'dying before our eyes' as third of Scots go private NHS Scotland: 'neurological patients falling through cracks' NHS Scotland: Nearly £2 billion spent on temp nurses and midwives The quality performance indicator target 7 - which deals with pathology and theatre capacity - remains difficult to achieve, as regional reports highlight limited pathology service capacity and operating theatre availability as key barriers to meeting these standards. Performance on imaging scans for patients with melanoma has also declined and has fallen short of national targets. According to Public Health Scotland, this target worsened in 2023-2024 after some improvement in the previous year. The Scottish Conservatives have criticised the government for "shameful delays" to skin cancer treatment which puts "lives at risk". Scottish Conservative shadow health secretary Dr Sandesh Gulhane MSP said: 'Under the SNP, far too many patients are not being diagnosed and treated in time for skin cancer. 'We know that these shameful delays harm a patients chance of recovery and puts lives at risk. 'The SNP's failure to improve cancer services has led to a shortage of vital pathology support and operating theatre access, while performance on melanoma imaging scans continues to decline. 'With Scotland recently enjoying a heatwave and many people enjoying the sun, it was a timely reminder of the dangers of skin cancer — and the critical need for rapid, effective treatment. 'That's why the Scottish Conservatives have set out common-sense proposals to prioritise early detection, promote healthy lifestyles and guarantee cancer services will have the resources they need to support patients.' Most skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun and, in May, new data published by the charity Melanoma Focus showed 45% of Scottish people suffer from sunburn at least once every year. There are around 17,500 new melanoma skin cancer cases in the UK every year and it is the sixth most common cancer in Scotland. Melanoma is considered the most serious form of skin cancer because it has the highest mortality rate, and deaths from melanoma are projected to continue to rise. The Scottish Government are committing £14 million for NHS Health Boards to improve cancer waiting times and £21 million targeted towards imaging. Ministers have said this is in addition to an increase in funding to address pressures within chemotherapy services, reaching up to £10 million annually by 2027, with £6.6 million released in 2025/26. Health Secretary Neil Gray said: 'Whilst we are treating more patients with cancer on time, within both standards, compared to the same quarter 6 years ago, it is vital we do more to reduce cancer waiting times, especially for those cancers which are more aggressive. 'As we see an increasing number of eligible cancer referrals, that means we also see an increase in demand for diagnostics. That is why we have committed to a range of actions to tackle waits. This includes expanding to seven-day radiology services, increasing recruitment of staff, using mobile scanning units and reducing radiology backlogs so that 95% of referrals are seen within six weeks by March 2026."
