Kelantan records 601 commercial crime cases, losses exceed RM14mil
KOTA BHARU: Kelantan recorded a total of 601 commercial crime cases were during the first five months of this year, resulting in losses amounting to RM14.1 million, according to state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat.
He said that based on statistics comparing cases and financial losses by the modus operandi of commercial crimes, the cyber and multimedia crime category recorded the highest number of cases at 401 incidents, or 67% of the total and resulting in losses amounting to RM7.47mil.
"Common cybercrimes include online fraud such as phone scams, fake purchases via social media, job scams, and love scams.
"The second highest category involves investment scam cases, the use of electronic cards, and other related crimes, with 105 cases recorded, accounting for 17.4 per cent, and losses totaling RM4.54mil," he said at a press conference after the monthly assembly for June, held at the Kelantan contingent police headquarters here on Wednesday (June 18).
Meanwhile, crimes related to finance, banking, cooperatives, and insurance recorded 81 cases (13.47%), with total losses amounting to RM966,336.38.
"For cases involving forgery, embezzlement, and land-related offences, only seven cases were recorded (1.16%), with losses amounting to RM85,000. Corporate cases also recorded seven cases (1.16%), but with significantly higher losses of RM1.05mil," he said.
Mohd Yusoff added that the police are intensifying awareness and prevention efforts through collaboration with relevant agencies and the public to combat the increasingly complex nature of commercial crimes.
"Over the past few months, we have seen an alarming rise in street crimes, including robbery, snatch theft, housebreaking, as well as a growing number of commercial crimes occurring through online platforms.
"Crimes such as online fraud, investment scams, and identity theft now not only result in financial losses but also impact the emotional well-being and sense of security within the community," he said. - Bernama

Shop assistant charged with CBT involving RM114,000
KOTA BHARU: A shop assistant was today charged with 10 counts of criminal breach of trust for allegedly failing to hand over RM114,630.80 to a company 10 years ago, when she was a clerk there. Bibi Kasiran Mohamad, 50, claimed trial for all 10 charges allegedly committed between January and October 2015 at a ticket counter at the Lembah Sireh Bus Terminal, before Sessions Court judge Zulkifli Abllah. She was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and 14 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad suggested the court impose a bail of RM5,000 for each charge. However, the accused's lawyer, Muhammad Khairul Azwan Azhan, sought the court to impose a bail amount of RM15,000. He reasoned that his client, the accused, was currently employed as a pastry shop assistant and is a widower after her husband's death last year. "My client is only paid RM45 a day, besides taking care of her elderly parents and has no previous criminal record," he said. The court set RM18,000 for bail with one surety.

Op Adun: Two Sabah assemblymen, businessman to be charged tomorrow
KOTA KINABALU: Two state assemblymen and a businessman, hauled up by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) under Op Adun, are scheduled to be charged tomorrow. In a media invitation, the Sabah MACC said the trio are expected to be charged at the Special Corruption Court here at about 9am. They will face a total of four charges under the MACC Act 2009. Two of the charges will be brought under Section 16(b)(A) of the Act for offering bribes, while the other two will be under Section 16(a)(A) for accepting bribes. Op Adun is an investigation into the involvement of Sabah assemblymen in the issuance of mining licences. Authorities began their probe following the publication of a series of edited videos by a news portal in November last year. It was reported earlier this week that the MACC had arrested another Sabah assemblyman on suspicion of soliciting and receiving bribes amounting to about RM150,000 in connection with mining licences in the state. The suspect, who serves as an assistant to a minister, was detained when he turned up to provide his statement at the Sabah MACC office at 9.30am on June 23. The man, in his 40s, is the third state assemblyman arrested by the MACC to date in connection with the corruption investigation. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki had previously said that the commission is expected to charge three individuals under the ongoing Op Adun probe. He was reported as saying that the trio, comprising two assemblymen and a civilian, were expected to be charged by the end of this month.

Avoid superstitious acts at grave, says UPSI student's family
JERTIH: The mother of Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of the students who died in the Gerik bus crash on June 9, has called on visitors to her daughter's grave to behave respectfully and refrain from superstitious acts. Kamariah Abdul Latif, 60, said the family had to put up a barrier around Nurly Sahirah's grave at the Tanah Perkuburan Islam Kampung Gong Pasir in Kerandang to curb such behaviour. "We put up the barrier because some visitors were taking soil and kissing the tombstone. "I advise everyone to observe proper decorum when visiting graves and avoid any acts of superstition," she said when met by Bernama at Kampung Gong Pasir, Kerandang, today. Kamariah also reminded the public not to touch the handwritten Quran by Nurly Sahirah, which is kept in the family's house compound. "I make sure no one flips through the pages, and some have even kissed the Quran. "I'm worried the writing will be affected or come off. This is the only memory I have of her," she said. A check by Bernama today found that people from various states, including Kedah, Pahang, Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan, continued to visit the family of Nurly Sahirah, nearly three weeks after the tragedy. Nurly Sahirah was among 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died when their bus was involved in an accident near Tasik Banding, Gerik, along the East-West Highway. Another 33 people, including the bus driver and three passengers in a Perodua Alza, were injured. Nurly Sahirah's brother, Mohd Najmuddin Azman, 28, has appealed to the public to respect the family's privacy. "Please give our parents a chance to rest." Najmuddin said the family has decided not to receive visitors from this Wednesday to Saturday. "The family home will also be closed to the public, and we hope for everyone's cooperation," he said when contacted today. He added that since Nurly Sahirah's death, their father Azman Mohamad, 63, and mother have not had proper rest.
