TELUS Mental Health Index: Significant Savings Gaps And Gender Disparities Challenge The Wellbeing Of NZ's Workforce

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - Today, TELUS Health released its TELUS Mental Health Index ('the Index'), revealing significant savings gaps and gender disparities across New Zealand's workforce that impact overall wellbeing. The report also shows that two in five workers have no emergency savings, while parents express mounting concerns about their children's mental health. Regional disparities further underscore the need for tailored wellbeing support.
'The current economic climate coupled with a labour shortage and mental health challenges is putting immense pressure on our workforce,' said Julie Cressey, General Manager New Zealand, TELUS Health. 'With financial concerns topping the list of personal stress for over half of working people in New Zealand, we're witnessing a significant ripple effect across communities and workplaces. Women and individuals in regions like Waikato and Northland are bearing the brunt of this economic uncertainty, underscoring the critical need for tailored mental health support - a one-size-fits-all approach simply won't suffice in addressing these complex, localised challenges.'
Positive work environments significantly impact employee mental health and wellbeing. TELUS Health data highlights this connection: workers in family-friendly workplaces – currently 56 per cent of organisations – report mental health scores of 62.8, more than two points above the national average of 60.6. The effect is even more pronounced among working parents, with those feeling supported by colleagues scoring 64.5. These findings underscore the crucial role workplace culture plays in mental wellbeing. While a supportive environment is foundational, structured wellbeing programmes remain essential to meeting the diverse needs of all employees and ensuring no one is overlooked.
The TELUS Mental Health Index also found:
Thirty-one per cent of workers say their mental health negatively affects their productivity, with 40 per cent feeling overwhelmed.
Financial concerns are the primary source of personal stress for more than half (54 per cent) of employees.
Mental health risk affects 37 per cent of workers, with anxiety having the worst Mental Health Index sub-score at 53.4.
Parents show significant concern for children's mental health, with scores 7 points below national average.
Thirty-five per cent of parents experience guilt over limited family time.
High workload ranks as a top workplace stressor for 31 per cent of employees.
Women's mental health scores (58.9) trail behind men's (62.4).
Family-friendly workplaces show mental health scores 2.2 points above average.
'In an era where financial insecurity and mental health disparities remain prevalent, employers who champion family-friendly workplaces and prioritise employee wellbeing cultivate more engaged teams and drive positive mental health and wellbeing outcomes,' said Paula Allen, Global Leader, Research & Client Insights, TELUS Health. 'Implementing wellbeing strategies that make workers feel supported and cared for is not only beneficial for employees, but crucial for sustaining organisational vitality, fostering a healthy company culture and ultimately driving business success.'
In the second quarter of 2025, the mental health scores of workers in various regions were:
New Zealand: 60.6
Australia: 63.0
Singapore: 62.9
United Kingdom: 64.7
South Korea: 56.1
Canada: 63.1
United States: 69.9
Europe: 62.4
The Waikato region reported the lowest mental health score (58.0), with Gisborne and Hawke's Bay leading the highest scores in the country (63.2). Northland showed the most improvement, with a 4.7-point increase since January (60.4) and workers on the South Island reported higher mental health scores overall (61.9).
The TELUS Mental Health Index is based on a response scoring system that then turns individual responses into point values. Higher point values are associated with better mental health and less mental health risk. Scores between 0 to 49 correspond with distress levels, scores between 50 to 79 correspond with strain levels and scores between 80 to 100 correspond with optimal levels of mental health.

The research report is conducted globally to examine the mental health of employed people in New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Europe. The data for the TELUS Health Mental Health Index was collected through an online survey from March 14 and March 27, 2025, with 1,000 respondents. All respondents reside in New Zealand and were employed within the last six months. The data has been statistically weighted to ensure the regional and gender composition of the sample reflects this population.

The uncertainty around the US economy created by President Trump's trade war and his domestic agenda should be a golden opportunity for the UK to attract more international capital. John Flint, the outgoing chief executive of Britain's National Wealth Fund, which has been capitalised with £28 billion to help accelerate private investment into the UK's clean energy and growth industries, told MPs last week: 'The world has got very strange in the last few months. The UK looks good right now on a relative or comparative basis. 'There is a government with a big majority, institutions that work, respect for the rule of law … The biggest consumer of capital internationally [America] is on a different track right now. We have a window and a moment where we can appear to be different.' However, the view among some powerful Wall Street investors is that while more opportunities for investing outside the US would be welcome, the UK government hasn't given them any good reason to deploy their capital. As one Wall Street executive told me: 'I think the UK has really significant challenges. It's not leading in enough places to attract capital. It doesn't have the innovation engine going and it has other structural challenges still lingering: inflation, very sluggish growth, very high social spend. 'They've got an entitlements problem, just like we have an entitlements problem. But we have a more innovative, dynamic economy. I don't see a real plan. And they're chasing away capital, not attracting capital.' Flint, who is due to leave his role in August, told MPs that the UK does not yet have a list of investable projects ready to present to prospective investors. When asked how long it would take to create the list, he said: 'I cannot give you an answer, because it depends on so many different factors. Planning is one of them, which I know the government are reforming.' Meanwhile, the government has no apparent plan to stop the decline in UK-listed growth companies. Overseas takeovers of UK-listed companies have accelerated, while those companies have not been replaced with new listings. Worryingly, it was revealed last week that Sir Pascal Soriot, chief executive of AstraZeneca, Britain's most valuable public company, would like to move its stock market listing to the United States. The government's series of U-turns and the rebellion within the Labour Party over welfare reforms have not helped improve the UK's image to global investors, instead raising questions about the government's ability to manage spending. The uproar on Wall Street over Trump's 'liberation day' tariffs in April raised hopes elsewhere that Europe could reverse the increase in global inflows to the US since the pandemic. The US received 41 per cent of global gross capital inflows in 2022-23, the highest share of any country and nearly double its pre-pandemic share of 23 per cent, according to the US Council of Economic Advisers. So far this year, outflows from US equity funds have more than doubled to nearly $87 billion, while more than $100 billion has flowed into European equity funds — up threefold on the same period last year, analysis from LSEG's Lipper Fund research database showed. However, Wall Street is warning that the minor reallocation of capital from the US at the start of the year could be coming to an end as the early impact of Trump's tariffs is less severe than feared. Stuart Kaiser, Citi's head of US equity trading strategy, said: 'There was a period of probably six out of nine weeks where you saw net selling of US ETFs [exchange-traded funds] and long-term mutual funds. So I think the initial shock of the tariff headlines did hurt consumer sentiment and did hurt investor sentiment, but it does also feel like those investors are kind of re-engaging back in.' The UK cannot only rely on America's problems alone to attract more investment. Policymakers need to come up with a catalyst to entice more investment away from the US. HALIFAX — Irving Shipbuilding is scheduled to enter a plea Oct. 1 on charges of violating workplace safety rules after an employee died last year at its Halifax site. A lawyer for the family-owned company appeared in provincial court on Monday for arraignment on five counts of violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act on Feb. 19, 2024. Jamie Knight died that day after he was struck by a piece of equipment during snow removal operations at the yard. The province's Labour Department laid charges alleging the company failed to create a safe work plan and a risk assessment for snow removal. The department also alleges that the company did not ensure the snow removal equipment was used according to the manufacturer's specifications, and failed to appoint a person to direct the machine's movements. Irving is building the Royal Canadian Navy's new fleet at the company's Halifax shipyard, with the next stage being construction of the River-class destroyers. N.C. Couple Makes 'Every Minute Count' After Metastatatic Prostate Cancer Diagnosis: 'So Grateful for any Time I Get with This Man'

Joel Graybeal was diagnosed with prostate cancer in July 2022 and found that it had metastasized Joel and his wife Caroline have been to 160 doctors' appointments together, and Joel credits her for helping make the most of his treatment The two share how they stay optimistic and focused on the presentJoel and Caroline Graybeal refuse to let cancer stop them from living the life of their dreams. The couple met in 2013, when they were seated next to each other at a fundraiser. 'She's the best thing that ever happened to me,' says Joel Graybeal, 65, the managing partner of Triangle Rock Club. 'I've never been more loved, more accepted, more supported, more encouraged by anyone in my life, than Caroline.' They married in October 2017, the second marriage for both. 'It's been such a gift,' says Joel. Since Joel was diagnosed several years ago with prostate cancer, Caroline has been to every one of his 160 doctors' appointments. She researches new treatments and asks questions; after the appointments, he drops her off and drives himself to work. His wife spends hours searching for new recipes and prepares elaborate, healthy meals. They continue to travel, have weekly date nights and play pickleball together. 'I'm so grateful for any time that I get with this man,' says Caroline Graybeal, 60, who retired from her job as president and general manager of a local news station. 'He's my gravity. He keeps me grounded.' The couple lives in Cary, N.C. and shares their battle against Joel's prostate cancer and how they stay positive and determined to live their best lives with PEOPLE. "I used to say every day counts. Now, I think every minute counts,' Joel says. Joel: I was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in early July 2022. My oncologist said not only did I have cancer in my prostate and spots in my bones and my lungs, but I also have two brain tumors. That was a shock. Caroline: The whole thing was just so shocking because he had no symptoms. He felt fine. Joel: A tumor was smack dab in the middle of my brain. The doctor said, 'We can operate on this, but it's probably about the most dangerous and high-risk operation that we could do. We need to get you down to radiation oncology.' We were in Dr. John Kirkpatrick's office at Duke Health 90 minutes later. He pulls up the scans, looks at it, he goes, 'I'll get this for you, Joel,' with 100 percent confidence. They immediately scheduled radiation treatment for five consecutive days. And 13 months later, in September 2023, I had a brain MRI and they go, 'We got it. It's all gone.' I have an aggressive cancer; I've had a variety of treatments, chemotherapy, radiation, surgery. I've completed seven out of 10 immunotherapy treatments. I have had more than 120 in-person doctor's appointments, and about 40 virtual appointments. You can't give cancer the power to take your day away from you. You just can't. Then it wins. You've got to keep fighting. And my wife has been amazing. She has a medical family. Her dad was a doctor and her sister's a nurse practitioner, so she can read reports and decipher them correctly. She has been able to get on the worldwide forums for people with metastatic prostate cancer. She's on there, she's researching. She knows about the studies. And she's been so helpful with the diet piece. Caroline: We stopped any red meat. Instead of doing pasta, we do zoodles [zucchini noodles]. When we do have bread, we use sourdough. They say it metabolizes differently. I don't know if that's true, but they say it metabolizes better than whole wheat. I try to do a protein and then just a lot of vegetables. Joel: I have a standing appointment with a personal trainer every Wednesday. And I use the sauna. Cancer doesn't like heat. We play pickleball pretty regularly, almost every weekend. We try to stay as active as we can. We're more intentional about making sure that we're doing what we want to, living the life we want to. This year has the potential to be a really, really crappy year. If I've got 10 treatments and I'm down for four or five days each time, well, that's 50 days of not living life like you want. We just went to Costa Rica in March to celebrate Caroline's 60th birthday, it was such a spectacular trip. We plan to take our kids and grandkids to the beach in Kiawa in July. We have booked a trip to Turks and Caicos in October to celebrate our anniversary. A couple weeks ago, I took my son and my grandson and we flew to Fort Lauderdale and went peacock bass fishing. My 6-year-old grandson caught his first peacock bass — his feet didn't touch the ground for about two weeks. After I finished my last chemo in 2022, we flew to Florida to see our stepdaughter for her elementary school's grandparents' day. I'm an aerospace engineer by formal training. I used to work in the Pentagon, and I got my pilot's license 45 years ago, and I had been flying again. Caroline grabbed my log book, she grabbed my license and snuck it down there and also got clearance through the people at Duke that I could do this. But she made arrangements for me to fly a P 51, which is a World War II airplane. It is the model airplane that I used to put together when I was an 8-year-old. I've been enamored with this airplane for my entire life. It was the most awesome experience. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me. It's just been such a gift. I mean, I've never been more loved, more accepted, more supported, more encouraged by anyone in my life more than Caroline. Caroline: We are very different people, with very different backgrounds, but we are perfect partners. We balance each other so well. We just blend so easily. We don't have fights. We'll have things we don't agree about, and we're able to talk them through. We're able to be so honest with each other. And he is the nicest human being you will ever meet. He's always helping; he helped his son's friends move. He will do anything he can if you need help. My favorite part of the day is when Joel hugs me every night before we go to sleep. My Fitbit registers it as 'deep sleep' because he calms me so much. I'm not good with uncertainty. I just focus on we have right now. And we have a lot. It's keeping front of mind all of the blessings that we have at the moment and not putting the focus on what may be tomorrow. ... I never thought that I would end up with someone like Joel in my life, someone who you could count on a hundred percent, someone who would be a complete partner, someone who would allow me to be me. I'm so grateful for any time that I get with this man. Sometimes I think the doctors may think I'm a little annoying, but I know a lot. If they talk about a trial, I've heard of it. The research and the cooking — it's the only thing I can do. I'd like to be able to just magically make it go away, but I can't. But I can research. It gives me control over something. Joel: There's no certainty in any of this. No one's told us I've got a week to live, so we're going to take it one step at a time, hope for the best. And it's kind of like, when you drive home, your headlights only show 50 feet in front of you, and when you drive and you move 50 feet ahead, well then, you see another 50 feet. As the rest of it comes, we will deal with it. Caroline: Prostate cancer is probably one of the most variable cancers that there are because there's such an individualized response to treatment even at stage four. So no doctor who treats prostate cancer is ever going to make a prediction on how things are going to go. When we first went in the brain tumor thing, it's like, okay, we feel very comfortable and confident now that they've got that, but he has what they call innumerable tumors in his lungs. And I said to the doctor, 'What about that?' I was extremely nervous. And he says, 'Oh, I'm not worried about that at all. You can live with so much stuff in your lungs.' It's just very difficult to predict. What they are trying to do at this point is keep it from spreading. And so far they've been successful, at keeping it from spreading. But that's where the uncertainty comes in. I have the world's most optimistic partner. I was a religious studies major, and one of my big concentrations was Tibetan Buddhism, and that's a very "now focused" religion. Uncertainty is difficult for me, and that's the hardest part, but it doesn't help myself or him to wallow or freak out. Joel: Well, then it wins. You can't let it win.
