CIA in White House: Issue being probed, says Ford

The Hindu8 hours ago
Chicago, July 13: Charges that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had penetrated the White House during the Nixon Administration were being investigated, President Ford said on Saturday.
He expressed confidence that the facts would become known as a result of his own efforts, the expected inquiry by Congress and digging by the American press.
Mr. Ford was replying to questions at a news conference here. Asked about alleged CIA penetration of the White House and other Government departments, Mr. Ford replied: 'As far as I know personally, there are no people presently employed in the White House who have relationships with the CIA of which I am personally unaware.'
Mr. Ford's denial came at the end of a week which heard allegations, during a Senate Committee Inquiry into alleged illegal activities of the CIA, that the Agency had men within the White House.
One report had linked Alexander Butterfield, a former high-ranking White House official to the CIA, but Mr. Ford said there was no precise information on this.
Mr. Butterfield disclosed to the committee looking into the Watergate scandals that Presidential conversations at the White House had been taperecorded.

Shah's inaction against Pinarayi indicates a CPM-BJP deal: KPCC President

Thiruvananthapuram, July 14 (UNI) Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee President Sunny Joseph today alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken no action against the Pinarayi Vijayan led state Government despite calling the regime corrupt, indicating a political deal between the BJP and CPI(M). Though Amit Shah, during his visit to Kerala, listed several instances of corruption in the state government, the central investigation agencies under his ministry probing these cases do not appear sincere in proving his claims, the Congress leader claimed. "Amit Shah must now explain the status of investigations by central agencies into cases such as the Dollar Smuggling, Gold Smuggling, Exalogic, and LIFE Mission scams. These probes have virtually come to a standstill. Who gave the order to halt these investigations ? Wasn't it Amit Shah himself ? Instead of taking real action, he is now deceiving the public with mere political rhetoric," the KPCC President alleged. Pinarayi Vijayan, "who never dares to offend the RSS or BJP, is being kept in power to serve their interests," Sunny Joseph added. He claimed this is driven by Amit Shah's and BJP's blind opposition to the Congress. "While central agencies aggressively pursue non-BJP leaders over baseless allegations, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan - accused in multiple corruption cases - is being given complete protection" he opined. If Amit Shah is sincere in what he says, he must take action, Sunny Joseph demanded. UNI DS AAB RKM

Cash-hit cong-ruled states not able to fill job vacancies: Prahlad

Hubballi: Congress-ruled states like Karnataka are unable to fill job vacancies due to the precarious financial condition they face, alleged Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday. Responding to a question related to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reportedly targeting the BJP government at the Centre on the issue of unemployment, Joshi hit out at the former, accusing him of making statements based on what his advisers tell him, instead of himself going into details. 'Mr Rahul Gandhi doesn't always go into details. He will just give a reaction based on some feedback that his advisers give him. He doesn't go personally into details. Actually, post Covid, especially if I can say, employment rate has increased like anything, EPFO numbers itself show that,' Joshi said. Speaking to reporters here, he said as far as filling up vacancies in the central government are concerned, from 2022 to till date, every month there is Rozgar Mela, and every month 50,000 to one lakh people are being absorbed into the government. 'So far, in the last two-and-half years, more than seven-and-half lakh people have been recruited into various government departments and institutions,' he added. Noting that the ruling Congress in Karnataka had not filled more than 2 lakh vacancies in the state, the union minister said these vacancies have not been filled as the government is unable to pay the serving employees itself on time. 'They (Karnataka government) are not able to pay the serving employees on time. The payment of salary is delayed by ten to fifteen days to twenty days. Their (government) financial condition is precarious, so they are not filling up the vacancies,' he claimed. 'Before talking about something else, I will ask Mr Rahul Gandhi to look at what is happening in Karnataka, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh. They have governments in three states and they are in very bad shape,' he added.

Congress flags concerns over ‘Trump using MASALA deals' as India-US negotiate trade pact, cites think tank warning

With an economic think tank stating that India should avoid rushing into a trade deal with the US, the Congress on Monday warned against MASALA — Mutually Agreed Settlements Achieved through Leveraged Arm-twisting — deals, and said in 'our desire to curry favour, we have to be very careful'. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, 'Earlier there have been Masala Bonds issued by companies outside India but denominated in rupees. The International Finance Corporation did so in 2014 and 2015 and HDFC and NTPC followed a year later.' Now the New Delhi-based Global Trade Research Institute (GTRI) has sounded a warning on the trade deal being negotiated by India with the US, he said in a post on X. 'Given the totally arbitrary and frankly bizarre manner in which President Trump functions, GTRI has now drawn attention to what it calls MASALA (Mutually Agreed Settlements Achieved through Leveraged Arm-twisting) deals,' Ramesh said. Clearly the prime minister's 'acronym-itis bug' is proving infectious but while it may be in a colourful language the warning cannot be ignored, he said. President Trump has spoken 21 times since May 10th on how he used MASALA to get Operation Sindoor to abruptly stop,' Ramesh said. His remarks came after experts said India should avoid rushing into a trade deal with the US that compromises core sectors like agriculture. They cautioned that Washington is not sparing even its key partners like the EU. The US has shot off letters to 24 countries and the European Union (EU) imposing tariffs that are as high as 50 per cent on Brazil. On its key trading partners like the EU and Mexico, 30 per cent duties have been proposed from August 1. GTRI had said India must recognise that it is not alone in facing US pressure. The US is currently negotiating with over 20 countries and seeking concessions from more than 90. 'Yet most are resisting because they see these MASALA (Mutually Agreed Settlements Achieved through Leveraged Arm-twisting) deals for what they are politically driven, transactional demands offering no lasting trade certainty,' GTRI founder Ajay Srivastava said. He added that both the EU and Mexico are major trade partners of the US, and Washington can impose tariffs on them to pressure them into quick deals, India cannot expect a balanced deal. Another trade expert said India should tread cautiously while negotiating the trade pact with the US. From Japan and South Korea to the EU and Australia, countries are resisting Trump's trade deals that demand tariff cuts without reciprocal US concessions, mandate guaranteed purchases of American goods, and leave the door open for future tariffs even after a deal is signed, the GTRI said. A team of Indian trade negotiators will soon visit Washington to further talks for the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). 'India should stay the course and avoid trading away core sectors like agriculture. A hasty deal under pressure could have irreversible consequences, especially when such agreements may not survive the next shift in US politics,' Srivastava said.
