
Lydia Ko played Augusta. Here's what she thought, what she shot and what she ate
Lydia Ko has become known for playing quite a bit of casual golf since getting married to Jun Chung, who has definitely been bitten by the golf bug. The couple played frequently while on their honeymoon in New Zealand. She's even caddied for Chung while he played in a U.S. Am Tour event.
After Ko won her 23rd career title in Singapore earlier this month, the couple went on a golf spree. Ko went to Pebble Beach for an outing with one of her sponsors, and while there, played Cypress Point the next day. They also played Lake Merced, where she's had so much success, there's a plaque with her name on the 18th fairway, and Pasatiempo Golf Club. In all, they played about eight rounds in 10 days.
It was a round back in December, however, that proved especially interesting. That's when Ko and her husband played Augusta National for the first time.
"I had texted Jason Day actually after my first round and I said, this course is so hard," Ko told Golfweek with a laugh. "I'm so glad I'm not playing in that tournament because it would kick my butt."
Ko and her husband played two rounds at Augusta National with another couple. Ko shot 71-70 on her own ball.
"I think because of how sectioned off the greens are, it was really difficult to just get really close to the pins and set up a lot of birdie opportunities," said Ko. "But on the last day, I finished off with a birdie on the 18th, so that was a perfect way to cap off the trip."
Ko, who partnered with Day to win the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational in 2023, said she got to the tee box on every hole at Augusta and had the same reaction: Wow, this is not what I thought it was going to look like.
"I think the elevation and just the shape of the holes. I thought it was just a slight dogleg, but No. 2 was ultra downhill and it kind of swings to the left but the slope goes left to right. I was like, wow, I understand now, and that's like one of the more fairly easier holes for the guys, I think, when they play."
Ko's first visit to Augusta National was back in 2016 when she was on hand to receive the Golf Writers Association of America Female Player of the Year Award. She caddied for Kevin Na in the Par 3 Contest and hit a shot on the ninth hole, stiffing it to 3 feet.
The LPGA Hall of Famer never actually saw anything beyond the range and the Par 3 Course on that trip, though. This, she said, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
When it comes to Augusta National food, Ko said their flight into Atlanta was delayed, and she tried Chick-fil-A for the first time at the airport. She was impressed with the waffle fries and Chick-fil-A Sauce, opting to stay healthy with the grilled nuggets.
When she got to the club, however, she indulged in the fried chicken.
"That was definitely one of the most memorable bits," said Ko, adding, "I'm a sucker for fried chicken and fries."

'Then I woke up the next morning on Thursday and I woke up in the morning and I felt really dizzy, cold sweats, had no energy. 'I got through about 12 holes, and I was actually playing really solid golf. And then I teed off on the back nine. So it was on the third hole of the golf course, which was my 12th hole, I felt really dizzy and I was in the bunker hitting a fairway shot and I had to sit down for a minute because my eyesight went and my hearing went — and I don't know if anyone has ever fainted before, but your eyesight goes and then your hearing goes, and then it goes all muffled. 'So I sat down, got up, hit my bunker shot, actually nearly made birdie. Walked to the next tee, called the medics, and then before I hit my tee shot, my eyesight went again, my hearing went, and then my knees gave away and I, like, collapsed and fainted. And then I got back up, hit my tee shot. Felt like — sit down, I was thinking, I've only got six holes left. I've got some birdie holes. Like, just finish the day, get to 3 or 4 under and I'm sound. 'Walked off the tee box, 20 yards off, I don't even remember anything. My caddie said my eyes rolled to the back of my head and I was out for over a minute. And the security guard and the medic caught me just before I was about to hit my head on a concrete slab. So I was out for a minute. '... when I woke up from fainting I felt, like, I come out of a really nice deep sleep. Like, I felt really nice. I was like, oh, this feels good. I'm, like, that's not my bedroom. I see birds above me and about 15 people around me and I was like, where the f** am I? Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to swear. Sorry. But yeah, that's what I see when it happened.' Hull said her agent asked new LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler if Hull could finish her opening round later in the day but that, as Hull knew it would be, was denied. A major part of Hull's recovery has been rest, which means she hasn't been able to workout the last two weeks and can't do so for two more. 'I don't like sitting still,' she said. 'Drives me bonkers, not being able to go to the gym. I've been chilling and practicing. I've still been practicing pretty hard. I'm not one to just do something. So just twiddling my thumbs.' Hull will at least get back to competition Thursday, alongside world No. 1 Nelly Korda and Lottie Woad, who nearly won the Evian in her final start as an amateur and is making her professional debut this week. 'Probably won't see me strolling 30 yards ahead of everyone like I usually do,' Hull said. 'Probably be 30 yards behind everyone, but I'll get it done.'

Among its major championships is the US Women's Open, founded way back in 1949. The Women's PGA Championship celebrated its 70th anniversary this season, while the Chevron Championship and the Women's Open have been held since 1972 and 1976, respectively. The youngest major is the Evian Championship, which is a respectable 34 years old, although it has only been considered a major championship since 2013. Aside from the major championships, there are also other long-standing tournaments that attract a number of the world's best players each year. One of them is precisely the Women's Scottish Open, which has been held since 1986. The current edition will feature four players from the top 10 in the world rankings and 14 from the top 25. Other similar tournaments include the KPMC Women's Open, which has been held since 1973 and even held the status of a major championship for several years. Virginia's Ben James leads PGA Tour University preseason rankings for Class of 2026
Fall is quickly approaching, which means college golf is right around the corner. The 2025-26 season is almost upon us, as plenty of the best amateurs in the game will tee it up in search of a national championship. This season, the NCAA Championship returns to Omni La Costa in Carlsbad, California, where the Northwestern women and Oklahoma State men took home titles in May. With the new season also means new PGA Tour University rankings for the Class of 2026. On Wednesday, PGA Tour U announced its preseason rankings for the Class of 2026. This will be the sixth year of PGA Tour U, with David Ford finishing in the top spot last year and earning a PGA Tour card. The preseason ranking includes players from 16 schools, with Ole Miss having four players in the preseason top 25. In all, the top 25 features players from seven countries: China, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, Sweden and the United States. In partnership with the World Amateur Golf Ranking, PGA Tour U ranks players based on the last two years of their collegiate careers. Eligible tournaments include NCAA Division I men's team competitions, official PGA Tour tournaments and select DP World Tour events. The ranking period for the Class of 2026 began Week 23/2024 and concludes June 1, 2026, following the final round of stroke play at the NCAA Division I men's national championship. The No. 1 player in the final PGA Tour University Ranking next June will earn PGA Tour membership, while players Nos. 2-10 will earn Korn Ferry Tour membership for 2026 and players Nos. 11-25 will earn exempt membership for PGA Tour Americas Segment II in 2026. Finishers Nos. 2-5 will be exempt into Final Stage of Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, while Nos. 6-25 will be exempt into Second Stage. PGA Tour University Class of 2026 preseason rankings James is a three-time Golfweek first team All-American. He has six victories in 35 collegiate starts, and he helped the Cavaliers to a national runner-up finish at the 2025 NCAA Championship. James has represented the United States twice at the Arnold Palmer Cup (2023, 2024) and will make his second appearance at the Walker Cup in September. He has made nine starts on the PGA Tour, including the last two U.S. Opens, and finished T-33 at the Valero Texas Open in April. In 2024-25, Maas led the Longhorns with 18 rounds in the 60s and posted eight top-10s, including a victory at the Pauma Valley Invitational. A native of Pretoria, South Africa, Maas has four made cuts in seven starts on the DP World Tour, including a fourth-place finish at the Investec South African Open Championship in March 2025. La Sasso became the second player from Ole Miss to win the NCAA individual title, joining Braden Thornberry (2017). In 12 starts during his junior season, La Sasso tallied three victories and compiled the lowest scoring average (69.48) in program history en route to being named a Golfweek first-team All-American. He is making his fifth PGA Tour start of the summer at this week's 3M Open, and in September he will join James on the U.S. team at the Walker Cup. Morrison posted 10 top-20 finishes during his junior season at Texas, including his first collegiate victory at the Amer Ari Invitational. In June 2024, he became the first American to win the European Amateur and earned an exemption into the 2024 Open Championship, where he made the cut and finished T-60. Morrison has advanced to match play at The Amateur Championship the last two years. Summy's junior season included seven top-10s and a victory at the Maridoe Intercollegiate, and he led the Sooners with 20 rounds in the 60s and a 70.35 scoring average. His 2024 summer was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Sunnehanna Amateur, and this summer he has a T-12 at the Northeast Amateur and T-3 at the Southern Amateur. Oklahoma is the only school that has produced a PGA Tour U graduate each of the first five years (2021-25), and the Sooners lead all schools with eight PGA Tour U alumni. Nos. 6-25
