Former NFL MVP questions if Jayden Daniels will be a 'one-hit wonder'

Former NFL MVP questions if Jayden Daniels will be a 'one-hit wonder'

USA Today19 hours ago
The Washington Commanders open training camp in less than three weeks. Quarterback Jayden Daniels will begin his second NFL season, and hopes are extremely high for Daniels and the Commanders after last season's surprising 12-5 campaign.
After such a phenomenal season, what can Daniels do for an encore? Washington general manager Adam Peters spent the offseason surrounding his franchise quarterback with a revamped offensive line, led by five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil, and also acquired former Pro Bowl wide receiver Deebo Samuel to pair with Terry McLaurin.
Some believe Daniels could suffer a sophomore slump. He wouldn't be the first young superstar to take a step back in his second season. However, former NFL MVP Cam Newton takes it a step further, raising the question of whether Daniels could be a one-hit wonder.
On a recent edition of his podcast, "Funky Friday," Newton's special guest was rapper Wale. Wale is also a Washington Commanders superfan.
"Do you fear that Jayden Daniels could be a potential one-hit wonder?" Newton asked Wale.
"No," Wale responded. Then, Newton asked what made Daniels different.
"He loves the game too much," Wale answered. "You know, you got people that don't love the game, they love what comes with the game. That boy loves the game. He just loves the game."
Then, Newton brought up a comparison that no Washington fan wants to hear: Robert Griffin III.
"There was nobody who had the game in a chokehold like Robert Griffin III," Newton said. "I see that same thing happening for Jayden and, you know, being in that community, do you fear that?" he asked Wale.
Wale brought up a great point from a Washington fan perspective. Fans are optimistic about Daniels and this new regime, but that "PTSD," as Wale called it, remains until there is sustained success.
You can watch the episode here:
It's easy to dismiss Newton as a hater here. However, remember, he shares a similar history with both Griffin and Daniels. Newton won the Heisman Trophy in 2010 and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft. In 2011, he was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Griffin won the 2011 Heisman, was the No. 2 pick in the 2012 NFL draft and the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. Daniels was the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner and the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Newton experienced much more success in the NFL than Griffin. Griffin had a phenomenal rookie season, but that was it. Newton was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and the 2015 NFL MVP. He never reached the highs of that season again.
Daniels is considered a much more advanced passer than either Newton or Griffin at the same stage of their careers.
As for Newton's question, will Daniels be a one-hit wonder? Don't bet on it. But we'll see soon enough.

He entered the NFL in 2022 as a rookie free agent out of N.C. State with the New York Jets. He played in seven games, starting four, as a rookie and had 300 yards and a touchdown. He signed a futures deal with the Cardinals in January. Bam Knight 2025 contract details Knight's deal is for one year and the league minimum. If he makes the 53-man roster, his salary and cap hit will be $1.03 million. Who is Mike DeBartolo? Meet Nationals interim GM set to make first overall pick in 2025 MLB draft

The Nationals shook up their front office on Sunday, firing manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo amid a 37-53 season. Martinez and Rizzo brought Washington a World Series title in 2019, but they've struggled in recent years to match their success. Rizzo, specifically, had been the Nationals' general manager since 2009 and with the organization since 2007. Owner Mark Lerner decided that the organization needed a change, especially as Washington holds the No. 1 pick in this year's draft. Advertisement In Rizzo's place, the Nationals named Mike DeBartolo as the interim general manager. While DeBartolo is only in charge in an interim capacity, he is tasked with making an important decision while holding the No. 1 pick. Here's who will be making the first pick of the draft for the Nationals. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Who is Mike DeBartolo? Mike DeBartolo is a baseball executive who has been with the Nationals since 2012. He started out as an intern, then worked his way up to become the assistant general manager over the past few years. During his time with Washington, DeBartolo held positions including Baseball Operations Assistant, Manager of Baseball Research and Development, and Director of Baseball Operations. He was named Assistant General Manager in 2019 and has also served as both Vice President and Senior Vice President since then. Like his brother, Ethan will make the jump from high school to join an MLB franchise, and he may go first in the draft like Jackson did with the Orioles in 2022. If Washington doesn't take Holliday, they could also go with a college pitcher. LSU's Kade Anderson, FSU's Jamie Arnold and Tennessee's Liam Doyle are all expected to go high on Sunday. However, both of those picks were extremely successful. Advertisement In 2009 and 2010, Washington held back-to-back first overall picks that would change the franchise. In 2009, the Nationals took Stephen Strasburg out of San Diego State, and in 2010, they took Bryce Harper out of high school. Both players would become franchise players, and Strasburg played a key role in the team's first World Series title in 2019. MORE: Juan Soto, Trea Turner lead list of MLB All-Star snubs

Former Raiders Starter Lands New Job Ahead of 2025 Season

Former Raiders Starter Lands New Job Ahead of 2025 Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Las Vegas Raiders had several years where their defense was among the worst units in the NFL. From 2017 to 2020, the Raiders never ranked in the top 20 in points allowed or better than 19th in yards allowed (via Pro Football Reference). Advertisement Consistency was difficult to find during that stretch, as the team continued to experiment with which defensive combination would work best. As the team transitioned into life in Las Vegas in 2020, the team was unrecognizable from 2017. One key holdover, however, was safety Erik Harris. He played in 61 of the team's 64 games over those four years and started 30 of them. Harris was both a fixture and a bright spot for a wildly struggling defense. Former Las Vegas Raiders Safety Erik Harris (25).Stan Szeto-Imagn Images Harris went on to play for the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers after his tenure with the Silver and Black. He was waived by the 49ers at the beginning of last season and did not appear in the NFL in 2024. Advertisement With Harris now officially retired from the NFL, he is taking on a new job in his post-playing days. On Monday, Harris was announced as the head football coach at Gulf Breeze High School in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Originally from Pennsylvania, Harris went to college at Division II California University in Pennsylvania. He went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft but played one year for the New Orleans Saints before joining the Raiders. There, he spent three years in Oakland and one year in Las Vegas, totaling 189 tackles, including four for a loss, as well as five interceptions, 20 passes defended and a forced fumble. He also had two defensive touchdowns during his time with the Raiders. Harris had two pick-sixes during the 2019 season, one of which clinched a Week 4 win against the Indianapolis Colts.
