Mamata Govt moves Calcutta High Court against stay on monthly allowance to Group C, D school employees
A Supreme Court Bench dismissed 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staff employed in state-run and state-aided schools on April 3, upholding a Calcutta High Court order. Following the setback, the Mamata Banerjee government announced an ex gratia of Rs 25,000 for Group C staff and Rs 20,000 for Group D with effect from April 1 until the review case was disposed of in the Supreme Court. The High Court stayed the government's decision in June.
According to the Government, it has the right to grant allowance for the survival of the employees.
After the announcement of the allowance, a section of job seekers, who were on the waiting list for appointment in School Service Commission in 2016, approached the High Court claiming that they were deprived of their right.
Justice Amrita Sinha of the High Court Single Bench in June stayed the disbursal of monthly stipends announced for sacked Group C and Group D school employees whose appointments were nullified by the Supreme Court earlier this year.
The Supreme Court, while terminating the appointments, cited a 'vitiated' recruitment process. On April 17, the court allowed 'untainted' teachers to continue until December with full salaries but denied similar relief to non-teaching staff, citing 'substantially high' irregularities in their recruitment.
Justice Sinha, during the hearing, said, 'The state has decided to give allowances of Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000. How were these figures determined? Will they get paid for sitting at home? For how long?'
State Advocate General Kishore Dutta had told the court that the stipends had already begun to be disbursed from April 1. Justice Sinha responded, 'Why is the state in such a hurry? Certain protocols must be followed.'

In a remark that drew strong reactions, Adoor said, 'Don't give funds just because someone is a woman,' though he added that several talented women filmmakers are now emerging. He criticised the current approach of allocating funds, arguing that public money collected through taxes should not be distributed arbitrarily. 'Many people believe that just by applying, they are entitled to receive money to make a film. That's a wrong notion,' he said. Several filmmakers, including Dr Biju, objected to his remarks during the session and attempted to respond, but Adoor continued his address uninterrupted. He also took a swipe at the recent protests at the K.R. Narayanan National Institute of Visual Science and Arts, claiming that the agitation was aimed at undermining attempts to restore discipline at the institute. According to him, the protests ultimately contributed to the institution's decline. Adoor concluded by reiterating that government funding should not be directed towards commercial ventures but should promote quality cinema. His remarks have sparked backlash from sections of the film industry and civil society, with many criticising the tone and timing of his statements at a conclave aimed at shaping inclusive film policy.

SC stays proceedings against Rahul Gandhi over alleged remarks on Indian Army
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday stayed proceedings against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in connection with alleged derogatory remarks made about the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022. While granting relief, a bench comprising Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant, Udai Shanker Srivastava, in the case. The bench, however, expressed strong disapproval of Gandhi's comments, saying, 'If you are a true Indian, you wouldn't say such a thing.' 'You are the Leader of the Opposition. Say things in Parliament, why do you have to post them on social media?' the court asked. The bench also questioned Gandhi's assertion that 2,000 sq km of land had been occupied by China, calling the statement inappropriate. The Allahabad High Court had earlier, on May 29, dismissed Gandhi's plea seeking quashing of the summoning order issued by a Lucknow court. Gandhi had argued that the complaint was politically motivated and filed with mala fide intent. Srivastava, the complainant, had alleged that Gandhi's comments during the Yatra were defamatory and disrespected the armed forces in the context of the India-China border standoff.
