Scott McTominay shares true feelings on Man Utd as 'mistake' slammed
Scott McTominay claims he wants nothing but success for Manchester United after his exit was slammed as a mistake. The Scottish midfielder was sold by the Red Devils last summer as he completed a £25m move to Italian giants Napoli.
His exit brought to an end a two-decade association with the club having progressed through their academy to make over 250 first-team appearances. McTominay 's sale was thought to have been a boost to United's PSR calculations given any fee they received would have represented pure profit.
Despite the circumstances of his departure, McTominay has said that he does not harbour any ill feelings towards his former club. He said: 'I always want the absolute best for Manchester United. It's been my life for 22, 23 years so for me, I wish the club all the success in the world.
'I'm with them every step of the way. I want them to do well. I'm not someone who doesn't want that.'
McTominay ended up enjoying a dream debut season in Naples having played a key role in Napoli's Serie A title success. He made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals.
While the move was certainly a success from McTominay's point of view, some were not particularly convinced that the decision to sell him was the correct one. Former United coach Benni McCarthy recently slammed his exit.
He said: 'There are different reasons why you sell homegrown players sometimes. When they go, the profit lets you sign more players. Having said that, it was one of the biggest mistakes in football to let him leave.
'He was born to play for United. Maybe he wasn't the most technical, but he had fight, and I think it's what they will get back with Matheus Cunha.

'Scotty was a player that you look for in a dressing room to get you where you want to be. To let him go for what was a small transfer fee was a big shame. I think everyone at the club regrets that decision.
'For me, with my experience, I know what you need to deliver at a special club. People can say what they like but we tried to bring in great players that would fit. I know the manager always takes the blame, but sometimes the club needs to look at itself.'
Ex-United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also a vocal critic of McTominay's sale. Speaking to the BBC, he said: "Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100%. How you can sell Scott is beyond me."

Motherwell vs Rangers LIVE score and goal updates from Premiership opener at Fir Park
A new season, new hope - and for Rangers a new era. There have been plenty of false dawns at Ibrox in recent years but will it be different this time? Russell Martin leads the Light Blues into the 2025/26 season with Rangers now under the ownership of 49ers Enterprises following a summer takeover. Martin, who has already negotiated his way through the first Champions League qualifier, will get his first taste of domestic action as a manager with a short trip to Motherwell. And he will come up against his old Norwich City team-mate Jens Berthel Askou as the Steelmen also kick off the campaign under a nee boss following Michael Wimmer's departure. It's three years since Rangers won an opening Premiership game and Martin will be desperate to avoid another false start that kills the early season enthusiasm. There is also the small matter of trying to get a confidence booster ahead of their next Champions League qualifying challenge against Viktoria Plzen. 14:19Gavin Berry A big Ask for Well Jens Berthel Askou hopes to upset Rangers' favourites tag, and get his reign as Motherwell boss off to a flying start. Askou goes toe-to-toe with former Norwich City team-mate Russell Martin at Fir Park for the tea-time kick-off, and says going up against one of Scottish football's giants is a great way to kick off their Premiership campaign. But having watched them overcome Greek side Panathinaikos in Champions League qualifiers, Askou knows that won't be easy. It's always good to start against a top side and really get on your toes from the beginning and get that big test that you're always looking for. You want to compete at the highest level and against the best teams possible, and that's what we get the chance to do. It's about getting a good start. A good start is a good performance where we see there is potential in what we're doing. If we can top that off with a great result, even a win, that will make us even happier, and that is what we will try to do. We're adding quality in what we do every week, and for every game, and we know it's going to be a very big test on Saturday, against a top side that has just performed very well against a really good opponent over two legs. We know we're not the favourites, but it doesn't mean we can't make a result and a good performance, which is what I'm looking to do. I wouldn't say it's an easy job to come up against Glasgow Rangers, no matter what. I know Russell more than I know some of the other coaches, but I haven't played against him before. I expect us to try and do what we want to do, and not let the level of Rangers, or difficulty in playing against a top side, stress us and take away our courage, instead of trying to do it very basically, with fear, and stepping away from our principles. I expect us to do that in a very good way, through many phases of the game, and also for it to be very difficult to do what we want to do on and off the ball, at times. 'That's when we have to be really good, when we feel the game is getting tough and we're making more mistakes, while Rangers are showing their abilities. That's when we have to help each other, and I hope and expect that everyone around us and behind us will help us through these periods. But we've shown to ourselves and whoever has been here to watch us, follow us and support us, that we're in a better place than when we started. 12:44Ross Pilcher Third time lucky? Russell Martin might be a football purist. But while he's in charge at Rangers, he knows he'll be judged on one thing only - winning. And as he prepares for his first crack at the Scottish Premiership as a gaffer, he's convinced he can mould the Ibrox outfit into title contenders. He's only 57 days into the job as manager. At his press conference ahead of today's league opener at Motherwell, he joked that he should still be enjoying pre-season instead of fretting over three points. Unfortunately, that goes with the territory of being Rangers gaffer. In midweek, whilst not anywhere near their best, his team dug out a draw in Athens against Panathinaikos to progress in Champions League qualifying. Martin's pride in that result didn't necessarily come from the performance. After a summer of seismic change, it was their ability to find a way to win. The manager is still in the early stages of implementing a new style of play at Ibrox. They're miles away from where he wants them to be and he's adamant there will be more new signings before the transfer window closes. But while all of this is going on, he has to win football matches. And - then failed to recover sufficiently to challenge for the title - his team will have to do the same in Lanarkshire. 12:42Ross Pilcher Rangers the team to beat says Rothwell Joe Rothwell says everyone wants to beat Russell Martin's new-look Rangers - but insists they're ready to get off to a Premiership flyer against Motherwell. The Ibrox midfielder has already helped the club navigate a difficult Champions League qualifying tie against Panathinaikos. And now he's gearing up for their league opener at Fir Park on Saturday night. Rothwell expects it to be frantic in Lanarkshire with The Steelmen out to spoil Gers' Premiership start. But the 30-year-old - who arrived from Bournemouth this summer - is adamant that Martin's men can compete with Celtic for the title.

Cliftonville teenage strike sensation set for Championship move after successful trial
The Belfast Telegraph revealed earlier this week that the 17-year-old forward was a target for the Deepdale outfit and it is understood that agreement has been reached between the clubs and a deal is expected to be completed this month. In Jul,y the highly rated Reid played two matches during a week long trial at Preston Academy, scoring and assisting in a 3-2 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, and followed that up with a brace and another assist in a 4-3 win against Wrexham. The Welsh side were one of a number of clubs who have been monitoring the young striker's progress over the past year. So too Celtic, where he has been on trial, while Aberdeen and Luton have also been linked with him. Following Reid's successful trial, Preston made their move and with a two-year scholarship and one-year professional contract on the table, it is an appealing deal for the teen, with personal terms to be ironed out by his representative Ben Heath. Reid has been viewed as one of the bright young talents coming through at Cliftonville for some time having moved to the Reds from west Belfast club Glendowan. Last season, playing for the club's youth and reserve teams he scored over 50 goals. Many in the game feel he has the ability and attitude required to have a genuine shot at making it across the water. Cliftonville are fast becoming renowned for producing quality young players, with numerous English and Scottish sides keeping an eye on who is coming through at Solitude, with first team manager Jim Magilton encouraging them to rise up the ranks.

Incoming £60m Chelsea star thinks Benjamin Sesko is better than him and Man Utd ace
As Manchester United and Newcastle United continue to pursue Benjamin Sesko, some comments from one of his team-mates have bobbed to the surface Benjamin Sesko's RB Leipzig team-mate Xavi Simons has previously said the Manchester United and Newcastle United target is a better player than himself and Kobbie Mainoo. Sesko, 22, could soon be heading to the Premier League. Newcastle recently tabled a formal bid of around £70million for the powerful striker. He has been one of the most exciting young strikers in world football for the best part of a year and has previously been linked with Arsenal. One person who ranks him highly is Simons, who has been the ex-RB Salzburg's forward's team-mate for many years. The Dutchman, who is being tracked by Chelsea, has even said the striker is a better player than himself. Earlier this year, during a Q&A session, Simons was asked to rank other young players globally. After favouring Mainoo over Warren Zaire-Emery, he was then asked to compare the young United midfielder with Sesko - he immediately chose the young striker. Simons was then asked to pick between himself and the centre-forward. Without hesitating, he said Sesko again. The United and Newcastle target returned the compliment when he expressed his admiration for the Dutchman, following the midfielder's permanent switch to Leipzig in January. After Simons netted twice against Werder Bremen, Sesko said: "I love to play with him. He makes things fun. I'm really happy for his two goals because now he is going to have even more confidence." Interestingly, Simons also looks set for a Premier League move, but to one of United's biggest rivals. He was dropped from RB Leipzig's squad for a pre-season friendly against Atalanta as a result of the fierce transfer speculation. Simons recently removed any mention of the Bundesliga side from his Instagram bio, signalling his desire to leave the club. Sky Sports confirmed there is no injury concern for the former Barcelona wonderkid and that his absence is due to transfer speculation surrounding him. He has made his intentions clear to his club that he wishes to relocate to Stamford Bridge. Fabrizio Romano reports that discussions between Chelsea and Leipzig are at an "advanced" stage. The German outfit are believed to be seeking £60million to release him. Chelsea have already splashed considerable cash, having acquired Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and numerous others. Meanwhile, Newcastle have submitted a formal bid for Sesko. The Magpies, who face the prospect of losing Alexander Isak this summer, have tabled £65.5m, with add-ons believed to be worth approximately £4.3m. The Magpies have already witnessed numerous prime targets reject their approaches this summer for alternative destinations. Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford recently spurned their interest so he could rejoin Manchester City. He joins the growing list of players, including Pedro, Delap, and Hugo Ekitike, who have turned down the club. Newcastle are hoping to beat United to Sesko's signature, which will see Eddie Howe land an impressive insurance policy should Alexander Isak end up departing.
