But the Red Devils failed to see his potential, instead shipping the ace on loan to Preston, Granada and Benfica. The latter quickly made Carreras' move permanent for just £5m last summer. And his imminent move to Real a year later shows that there is life after the Theatre of Dreams. ANTHONY ELANGA Sold for just £15m to Nottingham Forest two years ago, Elanga has quickly developed into one of the league's top wingers. His speed and eye for goal saw Forest qualify for Europe for the first time in 30 years. And Elanga is now on the brink of a massive £60m transfer to Champions League side Newcastle. It's proved to be some turnaround from his United days. where Elanga scored four goals in 55 games. Back then, he was seen as little more than a back-up option out wide. Fans certainly warmed to him, his managers less so. Yet Elanga has shown that through hard work and perseverance, big things are possibly for any United player who finds themselves on the fringes. 14 Elanga was a fringe player at Old Trafford Credit: Getty 14 He is now set to join Newcastle for £60m Credit: Getty DEAN HENDERSON Once tipped as a future United No1, Henderson's fall from grace at Old Trafford was a quick one. Numerous loans resulted in Henderson briefly displacing David De Gea in the 2020/21 season, playing 26 times that term. But after a bout of Covid wrecked his hopes of staying between the sticks, he made just three further appearances before another loan move. Crystal Palace then snapped up Henderson in 2023, and again he was forced to battle to become No1, this time against Sam Johnstone. But Henderson finally cemented his spot under Oliver Glasner and featured 44 times for the Eagles last term. His form saw him earn a recall to the England set-up, with Henderson starting twice in the past 9 months. However, his greatest triumph came in May as Henderson inspired Palace to FA Cup glory over Man City. The ace saved a penalty and made several more important stops on a historic day for his club, with Henderson later dedicating the win to his late father. 14 Dean Henderson struggled for minutes with the Red Devils Credit: AP 14 He led Crystal Palace to FA Cup glory in May Credit: Getty ANGEL DI MARIA Not one to shy away from speaking out, Di Maria made no secret of his disdain for his sole year at United. The Argentine ace jumped ship after a dismal spell under Louis van Gaal, having arrived at Old Trafford from Real Madrid on the back of a Champions League win in 2014. Di Maria's failure to settle in Manchester was a shock to many, especially considering his £60m transfer fee. However, the midfielder quickly went on to prove that his shoddy spell in England did not spell the end of his career. Di Maria ended up moving to France with PSG and played 295 times as he clinched five Ligue 1 titles. The icon also starred for a season at Juventus before returning to old side Benfica and leading them to several cups. He is now back in his homeland with boyhood club Rosario Central and returns a legend, having been part of the Argentina side that won the 2022 World Cup. 14 Di Maria had a dismal sole season at United Credit: PA:Empics Sport 14 He ended up winning the World Cup with Argentina Credit: Richard Pelham / The Sun FRED Another maligned midfielder at United, Fred's value was realised by fans soon after his departure. The unglamorous Brazilian was appreciated but not adored at Old Trafford. But he was a constant presence in the squad and ended up playing 213 times in five years. Fred then moved to Turkey with Fenerbahce in 2023 and has since become a mainstay of Jose Mourinho's side. Though he is yet to win a trophy in Istanbul, Fred has helped Fenerbahce close the gap to mega-money Galatasaray. While back at United, supporters have woken up to how integral Fred quietly was. Boss Ruben Amorim continues to struggle with his midfield partnership. And versatile Fred, who could do just about anything that was asked of him, would surely be a better option in there than United's current crop of flops. 14 Fred's contributions went under the radar at United Credit: Getty 14 He is now a key man at Fenerbahce Credit: Getty ANTONY Though technically still a United player, Antony's time at Old Trafford was effectively ended when he joined Real Betis on loan in January. Amorim's desire to not use wingers in a 3-4-2-1 shape meant Antony, who had struggled when getting regular chances under Erik ten Hag, was facing a make-or-break career moment. But after suffering from a severe lack of confidence in England, he immediately found his stride in Spain. Antony struck five goals and two assists in LaLiga for Betis, helping them secure a Europa League finish. He also played a key role on their run to the Conference League final, where Manuel Pellegrini's side were beaten by Chelsea. And Antony is now pushing for a permanent move to Betis, which could cost just £17m — making for a massive hit on his £86m United transfer. 14 Antony failed to live up to his £86m price tag Credit: Getty

Scott McTominay shares true feelings on Man Utd as 'mistake' slammed

Scott McTominay enjoyed a dream debut season with Napoli after quitting Manchester United despite not everyone being a big fan of the midfielder's exit from Old Trafford Scott McTominay claims he wants nothing but success for Manchester United after his exit was slammed as a mistake. The Scottish midfielder was sold by the Red Devils last summer as he completed a £25m move to Italian giants Napoli. His exit brought to an end a two-decade association with the club having progressed through their academy to make over 250 first-team appearances. McTominay 's sale was thought to have been a boost to United's PSR calculations given any fee they received would have represented pure profit. ‌ Despite the circumstances of his departure, McTominay has said that he does not harbour any ill feelings towards his former club. He said: 'I always want the absolute best for Manchester United. It's been my life for 22, 23 years so for me, I wish the club all the success in the world. ‌ 'I'm with them every step of the way. I want them to do well. I'm not someone who doesn't want that.' McTominay ended up enjoying a dream debut season in Naples having played a key role in Napoli's Serie A title success. He made 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals. While the move was certainly a success from McTominay's point of view, some were not particularly convinced that the decision to sell him was the correct one. Former United coach Benni McCarthy recently slammed his exit. ‌ He said: 'There are different reasons why you sell homegrown players sometimes. When they go, the profit lets you sign more players. Having said that, it was one of the biggest mistakes in football to let him leave. 'He was born to play for United. Maybe he wasn't the most technical, but he had fight, and I think it's what they will get back with Matheus Cunha. ‌ Was it a mistake for Man United to sell Scott McTominay? Share your thoughts in the comments below 'Scotty was a player that you look for in a dressing room to get you where you want to be. To let him go for what was a small transfer fee was a big shame. I think everyone at the club regrets that decision. 'For me, with my experience, I know what you need to deliver at a special club. People can say what they like but we tried to bring in great players that would fit. I know the manager always takes the blame, but sometimes the club needs to look at itself.' Ex-United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also a vocal critic of McTominay's sale. Speaking to the BBC, he said: "Scott and Fred together, they were lads you would put your hat on every day to give 100%. How you can sell Scott is beyond me." The Scudetto winner with Napoli had a raft of media commitments to attend to on the day - including a meeting with Aussie tennis ace turned pundit Nick Kyrgios for Talksport. He then checked out the day's main action, which included Cam Norrie taking on the awesome Carlos Alcaraz. And Napoli fans were loving it, particularly when he shared a picture of him giving a high five to a youngster wearing a No 8 McTominay jersey. Thought to be one of his sister Katie's three kids, family man McTominay told the BBC earlier in the day: "I've always lived very close to my mum, an hour away so I could go and see her when I wanted. "Now I'm 1500 miles away and I can't just nip home and see her, my family, my sister and her kids and all that. "It's different. But in life you have to take yourself out of your comfort zone. "If I can go somewhere and establish myself and do well then why not, who is to stop me doing that?" McTominay had alerted his Instagram followers to the visit back on Tuesday, sharing a picture of the pair of them in the back of a car and writing: "Tennis with Mum". Since being allowed to leave Man Utd, McTominay has turned his career around, being named the most valuable player in Serie A this season. Scott McTominay reveals connection to 'one of the best Wimbledon clips' ever

Napoli and Scotland footballer Scott McTominay has revealed his friend was responsible for a viral Wimbledon moment shared every single year. At the 2019 Championships, Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios was heckled by a fan in a video that regularly does the rounds on social media. In a match against Jordan Thompson, a frustrated Kyrgios shouted out he couldn't 'buy a first serve' before a second attempt clipped the net for a let. One spectator, who turns out to be McTominay's close friend, then made the crowd and Kyrgios himself erupt into laughter as he quipped: 'You can't buy a second serve!' 'It was so good,' McTominay said on talkSPORT. 'It gets recycled in our group chat every year.' Kyrgios, working as a tennis pundit for the sports radio station this year, replied: 'I can't believe it. 'So the clip and then the guy who said, 'Can't buy a second serve' – is your mate! That's got to be one of the most played clips of all time.' McTominay added: 'Every year, Josh Coulthard. It comes around in our group chat every year. Always Wimbledon repost it. Shout out to Josh. 'He loves his tennis – he goes everywhere all over the world, and watches and enjoys it. Yeah, what a guy, man.' Kyrgios continued: 'Shout out Josh, [he] created one of the best memes of all time.' Meanwhile, Kyrgios has urged Wimbledon to bring line judges back after a number of problems with the new electric line-calling technology. There are no line judges at The All England Club for the first time in 148 years with the Hawk-Eye camera system introduced for this year's event. 'This has been two days now where there's been malfunctions and things are happening,' Kyrgios said. More Trending 'I think arguably now we should just probably turn it off completely and maybe just get some line umpires for the rest of the tournament. I don't know if that's possible. 'I really hope it doesn't affect these high-level athletes and the level of tennis we've been seeing. 'It would be really unfortunate to see if something like that determines a big point or determines a set, and really does ruin a match.'
