Top surfers gear up for 6th Indian Open of Surfing in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: The surfing spotlight returns to Karnataka's coastal city of Mangaluru as the sixth edition of the Indian Open of Surfing is set to get underway at the Tannirbhavi Eco Beach on Friday.
Scheduled from May 30 to June 1, this is the second stop of the 2025 National Surfing Championship Series. Organised by the Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by the Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India (SFI), this year's edition continues to serve as a pivotal leg in the National Championship series, drawing India's finest surfing talent for three days of high-stakes competition and valuable ranking points.
Originally scheduled at Sasihithlu Beach, this year's competition has been relocated to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach due to unfavourable weather and wave patterns at the former site. While Sasihithlu has been synonymous with the Indian Open of Surfing for years, the new venue promises comparable wave quality while ensuring better safety conditions for surfers and spectators alike.
The three-day contest will see over 50 top surfers compete across four divisions: Men's Open, Women's Open, Groms (U-16) Boys, and Groms (U-16) Girls. Among the biggest highlights for this round is the return of defending National champion Ramesh Budihal and Kishore Kumar, two of India's top-ranked surfers who missed the previous edition but are now ready to make a statement.
They will join an elite lineup including Harish Muthu, Kamali P., Ajeesh Ali, Srikanth D., and Sanjay Selvamani, all of whom have impressed on the Asian circuit in 2024, including standout performances at the Asian Surfing Championship and the Maruhaba Cup. Their performances were key to India securing a 5th place rank in Asia last year and also securing two quotas for the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
Adding a dramatic layer to this year's edition is the surf forecast, with wave heights predicted between 10 to 12 feet across the competition dates. Due to cyclonic activity and unpredictable weather patterns over the Arabian Sea, the ocean may prove to be an unpredictable competitor and play a spoilsport to the event schedule.
The heightened challenge will also have implications for national rankings, especially with the Asian Surf Championship 2025, a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games, on the horizon.
The event continues to enjoy unwavering backing from key partners. The New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) returns as the Title Sponsor for the second consecutive year, while Karnataka Tourism presents the championship for the sixth year running.
'We're excited to bring the sixth edition of the NMPA Indian Open of Surfing to the coast of Mangalore. With a strong field of athletes and a challenging forecast of 10–12 ft waves, we are in for an intense and exciting three days of competition," said Rammohan Paranjape, vice president of the Surfing Federation of India and director at Mantra Surf Club.
In the lead-up to the sixth edition of IOS, local Grom events have been underway, aiming to unearth the next wave of surfing talent in the region. These grassroots competitions not only build momentum ahead of the national championship but also set the stage for a sustainable pipeline of talent.

India U20 women all set for first friendly against Uzbekistan in Tashkent

New Delhi [India], July 12 (ANI): The Indian U20 women's team have arrived in Tashkent to play two friendly matches against Uzbekistan U20. The first of them will be played on Sunday at the Do'stlik Stadium at 20:30 IST. The Young Tigresses, who had been training at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru, landed in the Uzbek capital on Friday morning and had a gym session in the evening. On Saturday evening, they had their official training session before the first game. India are using these friendly games to prepare for the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers next month, where they will face Indonesia, Turkmenistan and hosts Myanmar. Head coach Joakim Alexandersson said, 'We wanted to face a strong opponent to get an idea of what awaits us in the Asian qualifiers. We also want to assess how all players perform their roles in such games, especially as we get closer to finalising the squad for the qualifiers. These matches also help us gain valuable experience, not just on the pitch, but also from travelling and adapting to different conditions. 'The weather in Tashkent is quite similar to Bengaluru so far, so no issues on that front. The hotel, accommodation and food are also fine.' India U20 women travelled with a squad of 24 players, which saw a last-minute change as Anika Devi Sharubam replaced goalkeeper Melody Chanu Keisham due to the latter being ill. Uzbekistan, led by head coach Vladimir Panov, are also preparing as hosts of Group G of the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers, where they will take on Bahrain, Northern Mariana Islands and Jordan. The Central Asian nation also hosted the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2024 but lost all games and finished at the bottom of Group A. Uzbekistan U20's 23-member squad for these friendlies against India includes four players who travelled to Bengaluru in May with the senior team for the two FIFA friendlies against India. For India, there are two such players -- goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem and defender Shubhangi Singh, who were in the two matchday squads against the Uzbekistan senior team as the Blue Tigresses lost 0-1 on both occasions. Sharing his thoughts on the opponents, Alexandersson said, 'They are a pretty physical team, especially their strikers. They play quite direct with minimal risk, often pressing high and looking to exploit the space behind the defenders quickly. So we need to be prepared for all of that.' The Indian senior team and the U20s were training in the same facilities in Bengaluru, preparing for their respective Asian qualifiers. They played a practice match against each other last month, and a few U20 players also trained with the senior team during the camp. While the Blue Tigresses got their job done, emerging victorious in Thailand to qualify for the AFC Women's Asian Cup, it's now time for the Young Tigresses to do the same. 'Preparations in Bengaluru have been very good. There were a lot of strength and conditioning sessions, and we've definitely improved physically. We also played a practice match against the senior team before they left for Thailand. That was a very motivating experience for the girls. It inspired them and gave them confidence for these upcoming games. We have a few players who weren't fit enough to travel to Uzbekistan and have stayed back in Bengaluru. After these friendlies, we will finalise the squad for the qualifiers,' Alexandersson said.(ANI)

Underrated SENA hero of 2020s: KL Rahul becomes 2nd Indian with two or more Test centuries at Lord's

London [UK], July 12 (ANI): Opener KL Rahul became the second Indian batter after former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar to have more than one hundred at 'Home of Cricket', the Lord's. Rahul achieved this milestone during the second session of the third day of the Lord's Test against England on Saturday, where he scored 100 runs off 177 balls, which was laced by 13 boundaries in his innings. Other than Rahul, Vengsarkar has also achieved this milestone during his time. He did it on three occasions. This is KL Rahul's fourth ton in England, which is the joint second most by an Indian along with Rishabh Pant, Sachin Tendulkar, and Vengsarkar. The most centuries by an Indian batter in England is by former India skipper and head coach Rahul Dravid (6). Currently, Rahul has the most centuries among Indian/Asian openers in England with three tons. With this ton, the right-hand batter became an Indian batter with the most SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) tons this decade of the 2020s. He has five tons so far from the 2020s, and below him are Pant (4), Shubman Gill (3), Yashasvi Jaiswal (2), and Ravindra Jadeja (1). The 33-year-old cricketer continued his strong record as SENA Indian opener in this decade of the 2020s as he scored the most runs till do date. Rahul has scored 1129 runs in 14 matches. Below him are players like Rohit Sharma (691 runs in 11 matches), Jaiswal (674 runs in 10matches), Gill (347 runs in six matches), and Mayank Aggarwal (268 in seven matches). Till now, in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, KL Rahul has scored 337 runs in five innings of the three Tests at an average of 67.40 with the help of two centuries and one fifty. He is the fourth-highest run-getter so far in the series. In first meet post injury, long-jumper Sreeshankar sails to 8.05m

Sreeshankar's father S Murali, also his coach, was a relieved man. He was there beside him on Saturday. His team was expecting around 7.9m but eight was beyond expectation. 'It was such a good sight,' he told this daily, his words laden with emotions. 'We were expecting somewhere around 7.9m. He didn't have competition behind him, only practice. It's not easy. But to see him jump 8.05m is more than satisfactory.' The coach said the road to recovery was not easy but helped by experts at the IIS and NCOE. Murali said that they shifted from Palakkad to Trivandrum because they could use the scientific facilities at the centre. Priyam Singh, a physio with JSW, has been by Sreeshankar's side when he was injured and now when he is back. 'Priyam was a great help and Sree's rehabilitation process was over around the end of the year in 2024 at IIS and by January we shifted to NCOE so that he can practice and recover,' he said. He said that Sreeshankar has been training well and clearing 8m but needs to get a bit more consistent. 'With Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games next year, our target would be those two mega events first but our ultimate goal would be the LA28.' The world championships in Tokyo could be touch and go as they don't have much time to qualify. But they will try. For the record, entry standard is 8.27m and Sreeshankar has 8.41 as his personal best. This has been a terrible year for horizontal jumpers. National record holder Jeswin Aldrin (8.42m) has not crossed 8m and in fact his personal best this season is 7.83m. Solomon David is the season leader with a jump of 7.94m. For now, Sreeshankar is back as the leader of the India pack.
