
Petronas offers career support, reskilling as it trims workforce

PETROLIAM Nasional Bhd (Petronas) will provide strong support for employees affected by its upcoming job cuts, as part of its plan to restructure the company for the future.
'This undertaking will require workforce adjustments, with an estimation of 10% reduction of the total workforce. While this is a very difficult decision, it is a necessary one to ensure Petronas can continue to grow and serve the nation.
'Petronas is committed to managing this process fairly, objectively, and systematically,' it said in a statement.
Affected employees will receive a market-competitive separation package that goes beyond the legal minimum, along with access to career coaching, emotional support, medical assistance, upskilling programmes, and financial planning guidance.
To ensure a smooth and responsible transition, the company is working closely with the Ministry of Human Resources, including the Department of Labour and the Department of Industrial Relations, to comply with all regulatory requirements.
Additionally, Petronas is also collaborating with the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso) through the MyFutureJobs platform to help match eligible employees with new job opportunities.
At the same time, it is engaging with various government-linked companies to identify possible job placements within their organisations.
For those interested in starting their own businesses, Petronas' Innovation Garage will offer an entrepreneurship programme to help employees explore new ventures.
The support measures are part of Petronas' broader transformation into a more agile and integrated energy company. By investing in a future-ready, high-performing workforce, the company aims to stay competitive while expanding into cleaner and more reliable energy solutions.
Petronas said while the move is difficult, the company believes that it is necessary to ensure long-term growth and continued service to the nation.

PENAMPANG: Sabah oil and gas companies secured RM2 billion worth of work contracts in 2024, a three-fold increase that reflects growing confidence in local capabilities. This means more jobs and money in the industry now stay in Sabah, instead of benefitting outside companies. 'We scored RM2 billion last year and we hope that it is going to be more this year,' State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said in his keynote at the Oil and Gas Business Opportunities Forum held at the ITCC Grand Ballroom, Saturday. He also said those who compare Sabah's progress in the industry with Sarawak must bear in mind that the latter has 115 years more experience. 'Sabah and Sarawak are not an apples-to-apples comparison. Oil was discovered in Miri in 1910, so Sarawak is 115 years ahead of us. But we are running faster to catch up with Sarawak.' 'When our mind is focused on what needs to be done, things can get done quite well,' he said, adding credit is owed to the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA), signed with national oil company Petronas in December 2021. The turnaround began when Sabah created its own oil and gas company, SMJ Energy, three years ago. Starting with just RM50 million from the State Government and 11 workers, the company now employs 30 people and made RM362 million profit last year. 'We started very, very skeletal. But within three years the company is now worth RM5 billion in assets,' said Masidi, who is also SMJ Energy Chairman. The key was keeping costs low while focusing on making money. Instead of hiring lots of expensive managers, SMJ Energy outsources specific jobs and only pays when work is completed. A big reason for the success is the Sabah Local Content Council, led by SMJ Energy's OGSE and Corporate Executive Director Terry Biusing. This group makes sure more contracts go to Sabah-based companies. 'We have a local content council chaired by Terry and for the last one year there has been a notable increase in the volume of contracts secured by local companies.' He acknowledged that local companies sometimes lack the technical skills for complex jobs. The State encourages them to partner with experienced international firms whereby the foreign company provides expertise while locals do the hands-on work and learn new skills. Fadillah concludes central Asian visits, nuclear energy revival on the horizon

The visit focused on the potential revival of Malaysia's nuclear energy programme, alongside collaboration in the halal economy, tourism, energy investments and Islamic finance. A key milestone was the signing of a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) between MyPower Corporation, a special-purpose agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra), and the Russian state atomic energy agency Rosatom. The agreement paves the way for potential cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology, as Malaysia re-evaluates its long-term energy strategy. As Malaysia advances its National Energy Transition Roadmap, nuclear energy is being seriously considered as a reliable, clean baseload option to diversify the energy mix and achieve long-term climate and energy security goals. Malaysia previously had a robust nuclear development agenda, including plans to commission two nuclear power plants by 2021. However, these plans were shelved, and the Malaysia Nuclear Power Corporation was disbanded in 2018.
