According to news agency Reuters, the company accused French prosecutors of launching a "politically-motivated criminal investigation" which, it claims, threatens its users' free speech. Denying all allegations against it, X said that it would not cooperate with the probe. Sharing a post via its Global Government Affairs account, X said 'Based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech'.
"For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities' demands, as we have a legal right to do," the post added.
French lawmakers accuse X of "manipulating its algorithm'
French prosecutors opened a preliminary probe into the social media platform earlier this month. It was based on suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction, reports Reuters. According to it, the probe authorized police to conduct searches, wiretaps and surveillance against Musk and X executives, or summon them to testify. If they do not comply, a judge could issue an arrest warrant.

French authorities have launched a politically-motivated criminal investigation into X over the alleged manipulation of its algorithm and alleged 'fraudulent data extraction.' X categorically denies these allegations.
This investigation, instigated by French politician Eric Bothorel, egregiously undermines X's fundamental right to due process and threatens our users' rights to privacy and free speech. Mr Bothorel has accused X of manipulating its algorithm for 'foreign interference' purposes, an allegation which is completely false.
French authorities have requested access to X's recommendation algorithm and real-time data about all user posts on the platform in order for several 'experts' to analyze the data and purportedly 'uncover the truth' about the operation of the X platform. One of those 'experts' is David Chavalarias, who spearheads the 'Escape X' campaign. Formerly known as 'HelloQuitteX', the campaign is dedicated to encouraging X users to leave the platform. A second 'expert,' Maziyar Panahi, has previously participated in research projects with David Chavalarias that demonstrate open hostility towards X.
The involvement of these individuals raises serious concerns about the impartiality, fairness, and political motivations of the investigation, to put it charitably. A predetermined outcome is not a fair one. What's more, French authorities have classified X as an 'organized gang' for the purpose of the investigation. This characterization, which is usually reserved for drug cartels or mafia groups, enables the French police to deploy extensive investigative powers under French law, including wiretapping the personal devices of X employees.
X remains in the dark as to the specific allegations made against the platform. However, based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech.
For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities' demands, as we have a legal right to do. This is not a decision that X takes lightly. However, in this case, the facts speak for themselves.
X is committed to defending its fundamental rights, protecting user data and resisting political censorship.

Was US's serial killer wave a result of industrial pollution? In the age of true crime fandom, books about serial killers have big appeal. Murderland: Crime and Bloodlust in the Time of Serial Killers by Pulitzer-winning Caroline Fraser reminds us how stomach-churning this hobby can be. There are more women being killed on a page, in one terrible way after another, than men in the entire book. What the book investigates is why so many serial killers were roaming America in the 1970s and 80s. At the time, all this 'mindless violence' was blamed on political turmoil, dissolution of the family, on television. On black people, even though the superpredators were mostly white males. The book offers a dramatically different answer. It was toxins that made the men toxic. Sulfur oxides wafted up the furnaces spread across the Pacific Northwest, alongside lead and arsenic. Many neighbourhoods felt like Dante's inferno. Sometimes when men got into a bathtub after smelting work, the water turned green. But ASARCO, which operated many smelters (plus copper, zinc, asbestos mines) kept fighting off the citizens who wanted pollution controls and the scientists who worried about carcinogens. It creates a sinister parallel between how all the anti-pollution objections were swept aside for decades, and how many rape-murders the serial killers were able to get away with. Fraser completely reframes the time and space otherwise associated with baby boomers, Americana and Archie. She also enmeshes herself into this rebranding. She extends out the map of her childhood neighbourhood, centres it on Tacoma, and finds Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway also growing up near her, and Charles Manson imprisoned. In addition to the many serial killers she tracks through the book, she muses on her own father's random cruelties to his wife and children: 'I should have killed him while I had the chance.' If the Tacoma of that time is comparable to the wasteland landscape of Dune, it's because Frank Herbert indeed drew his desert vision from the city and its smelter, which made the air 'so thick you can chew it'. The book highlights research connecting the functional derangements caused by lead to men repeatedly beating, raping, strangling, stabbing and smothering women and children, as if compelled by some force as implacable as gravity. This fever only breaks around 1992, after regulators stop dragging their feet, leaded gasoline is phased out, and lead levels in American children and adults start declining rapidly. $565m credit line for Maldives, talks on free trade pact
PM Modi and President of the Maldives Mohamed Muizzu (Pic credit: AP) The turnaround in India-Maldives ties in the past 10 months - following the acrimonious removal of Indian military personnel from the strategically located country - seemed complete as India announced a fresh $565 million line of credit (LoC) for the Indian Ocean neighbour and signed an agreement to reduce its annual debt repayment burden by 40%. As President Mohamed Muizzu hosted PM Modi for the latter's first visit to the country under his presidency, receiving Modi at the airport, both sides affirmed their commitment to a bilateral investment pact and a free trade agreement, for which the terms of reference were finalised. Seven MoUs and agreements were signed. Muizzu had invited Modi as the guest of honour for the Maldivian independence day celebrations. India had extended an $800 million LoC in 2019 under the previous pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party govt but on this occasion the LoC is in Indian currency (Rs 4,850 crore). One of the agreements signed is expected to bring down Male's annual LoC debt repayment from $51 million to $29 million. Modi said that both countries will soon finalise a bilateral investment treaty and their target now is "from paperwork to prosperity", adding a local currency settlement system under discussion will facilitate trade. There was focus on defence and security cooperation as the new defence ministry building built with Indian assistance was inaugurated. Asked whether there was any discussion about China, Misri said in a press briefing that India continued to work very closely with the Maldives on any issue that might "impinge on not just our security but our common security in this region that we share". Modi will participate in the independence day celebrations on Saturday and meet political functionaries. The visit saw the leaders virtually inaugurating a roads and drainage system project in Addu city and six high impact community development projects in other cities.

Nagpur: In 2012, Maoists killed Suresh Alam, a former gram panchayat member in Nandigaon, Gadchiroli, suspecting him of being a police informer. His daughter, Naame Nagamani Alam, has now been directly appointed as a police constable. In 2005, a village warden Lalsu Pungati was lynched in a guerrilla kangaroo court in Nargunda, Gadchiroli. His son, Sainath Pungati, was directly appointed as a police constable. Both received their job letters from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 22. The ceremony marked a significant step in rehabilitation of families affected by Maoist atrocities. So far, 56 victims have been recruited into the police force in three years. Once helpless and cringing under fear after Maoists dragged their fathers out of their homes and slaughtered them in public, these orphans of insurgency have transformed their grief into resolve. Years passed, and the fear diminished as law enforcement turned the tables on the guerrillas. "We witnessed our father's killing. His lifeless body and my inconsolable mother are still fresh in our memory.
