On the eve of the 90th birthday of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, prominent Indian leaders, including BJP leader Vijay Jolly and JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, attended a celebratory event in Dharamshala to honour the revered figure.Speaking at the event, Vijay Jolly expressed deep admiration for the Dalai Lama, emphasizing India's strong bond with the spiritual leader."Well, India has a common relationship of friendship, tolerance, peace, and prosperity with the Dalai Lama. I have come over here to attend his 90th birthday celebration since we all revere him, we follow him, we respect him, we love him, and we wish a long life to the Dalai Lama. China may say whatever they wish to. But Dalai Lama has love and affection from all corners of the globe. He is an embodiment of peace, prosperity, and international brotherhood," Jolly stated.Echoing similar sentiments, Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh highlighted the significance of the occasion and the Dalai Lama's enduring legacy."Tomorrow is his birthday, and we have come to wish him good luck. To take forward the struggle he has made, he should gain strength. We wish him good luck and honour him on his birthday. The religious practice of the Indian government is very clear. The approach is that the Indian government does not interfere with it," Singh said.This comes after China's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday once again emphasised that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be approved by the central government in Beijing.Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Tibetan Buddhism is a religion with Chinese characteristics and that the reincarnation process must follow traditional methods, including the drawing of lots from a Golden Urn."Tibetan Buddhism was born in China and is a religion with Chinese characteristics," spokesperson Mao Ning said in a news briefing.Mao Ning referenced an 18th-century Qing dynasty selection method, which involves drawing lots from a golden urn to determine the reincarnation of high-ranking Buddhist figures.Meanwhile, Celebrations are underway in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, ahead of the 90th birthday of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama.According to the Gregorian calendar, the Dalai Lama's birthday is officially observed on July 6.The occasion is being marked with festive spirit and devotion by Tibetan communities and followers across the region.

Ball in Washington's court on India-US interim trade pact before July 9
With India setting its red lines on key issues in sectors such as agriculture and dairy for the proposed interim trade agreement with the US, the ball is now in Washington's court to finalise the deal, sources said. They said if issues are settled, an interim trade pact could be announced before July 9, which marks the end of the 90-day suspension period of the Trump tariffs announced on April 2 on dozens of countries, including India. "India has drawn its red lines... now the ball is in the US court," they said. In February, the two countries announced starting negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA). They fixed a deadline to conclude the first tranche or phase of the BTA by fall (September-October) this year. Before that, the two sides are locking to finalise an interim trade pact. On April 2, the US imposed an additional 26 per cent reciprocal tariff on Indian goods but suspended it for 90 days. However, the 10 per cent baseline tariff imposed by America remains in place. India is seeking full exemption from this 26 per cent tariff. "If the proposed trade talks fail, the 26 per cent tariffs will come into force again," one of the sources said. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal last week stated that India does not enter into any trade agreement based on deadlines and will accept the proposed trade deal with the US only when it is fully finalised, properly concluded and in the national interest. FTAs are possible only when both sides get benefitted and it should be a win-win agreement, he has said. "National interest should always be supreme. Keeping that in mind, if a deal is made then India is always ready to deal with developed countries," Goyal had said on July 4. The Indian team returned from Washington last week after holding talks with the US on an interim trade pact. Differences are also there on steel, aluminium (50 per cent) and auto (25 per cent) tariffs. India has hardened its position on giving duty concessions to the US on agriculture and dairy products as both are sensitive subjects. India has never opened the dairy sector in any of the previous trade pacts signed. US President Donald Trump last week said his administration is sending letters to the first batch of 10-12 countries, sharing details of reciprocal tariff rates and the entire process could be completed by July 9. His comments came amid increasing suspense in India on whether New Delhi and Washington would be able to firm up a much-anticipated trade deal before the US president's tariff deadline ends. He has, however, not named the countries. The president has stated that the reciprocal tariffs would come into effect from August 1. While the US is looking at duty concessions in sectors like certain industrial goods, automobiles (electric vehicles particularly), wines, petrochemical products, dairy, and agriculture items such as apples, tree nuts, and alfalfa hay; India may look at duty cuts for labour-intensive sectors like apparels, textiles, gems and jewellery, leather, plastics, chemicals, oil seeds, shrimp, and horticulture products. The US is India's largest trading partner from 2021-22. During 2024-25, the bilateral trade in goods stood at $131.84 billion ($86.51 billion worth of exports, $45.33 billion of imports and $41.18 billion trade surplus). India's merchandise exports to the US rose 21.78 per cent to $17.25 billion in April-May this fiscal year, while imports rose 25.8 per cent to $8.87 billion. The two-way trade in services expanded from $54.1 billion in 2018 to an estimated $70.5 billion in 2024. India is also a key destination for American businesses such as professional, scientific, and technical services, manufacturing, and IT. The US accounts for about 18 per cent of India's total goods exports and over 6 per cent in imports and about 11 per cent in bilateral trade. India received $70.65 billion between April 2000 and March 2025, making Washington the third largest investor. In 2024, India's main exports to the US included drug formulations and biologicals ($8.1 billion), telecom instruments ($6.5 billion), precious and semi-precious stones ($5.3 billion), petroleum products ($4.1 billion), gold and other precious metal jewellery ($3.2 billion), ready-made garments of cotton, including accessories ($2.8 billion), and products of iron and steel ($2.7 billion). Imports included crude oil ($4.5 billion), petroleum products ($3.6 billion), coal, coke ($3.4 billion), cut and polished diamonds ($2.6 billion), electric machinery ($1.4 billion), aircraft, spacecraft and parts ($1.3 billion), and gold ($1.3 billion).

Temples should be included in Sacrilege Bill in Punjab: BJP
BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Sunday demanded that Hindu temples and idols should also be included in the proposed Sacrilege Bill, for which a special Punjab Assembly session has been called on July 10 and 11. Chugh regretted that the Bill is being brought by the Bhagwant Mann government even after more than three years of its promise made in the election manifesto. 'But better late than never,' he said and demanded that the Bill must also include 'Pran Pratishthit' Hindu temples in Punjab. Chugh said that lately there have been a number of incidents in which Hindu temples were targeted. The BJP, he said, holds Guru Granth Sahib in the highest esteem, so the party welcomes the Bill, but at the same time Hindu idols should also be accorded respect. Meanwhile, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has called the Legislative Assembly, which was adjourned sine die on May 5, to meet at 11 am on July 10 under the second proviso to Rule 16 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha (Punjab Legislative Assembly). A government spokesperson said the law against sacrilege would prevent a repeat of such incidents in the future. 'For a long time, there has been a demand for making a law against sacrilege in Punjab. The Mann government will fulfil the demand of the people,' said the spokesperson. The incident of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib that caught nationwide attention took place in Behbal Kalan village of Faridkot district in 2015, and the subsequent police firing on protesters that claimed two lives was raked up by the Congress against the SAD-BJP combine government in the 2017 Assembly polls. Even in 2022 polls, in which the current state government came at the helm, the incidents continued to rock the state's political sphere as successive governments are under fire for failing to deliver justice in the cases. In the run-up to the last assembly polls, Justice Ranjit Singh (retd), who headed the commission into the alleged incidents of sacrilege and the subsequent police firing, placed then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) patriarch, and then DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in the dock. He castigated the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda, whose chief and self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is currently serving a 20-year jail sentence for raping two of his disciples and a life term for a journalist's killing, for the incident of sacrilege.

Karnataka BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi's son fires gun in air during Lakshmi Devi temple festival, booked under arms act
Former Karnataka Minister and BJP MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi's son, Santosh Jarkiholi, has been booked by the police following a video emerged showing him allegedly firing a gun in the air during a temple fair in Gokak, reported PTI on Sunday. On Friday, during the annual fair of Laxmi temple festival in Gokak town in Belagavi district, the incident occurred. Santosh was seen celebrating amid a crowd by firing in the air. The video of the incident has gone viral on social media. The Gokak Town Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Santosh Jarkiholi on Saturday and booked him for the illegal use of a firearm in a public gathering. Police claimed that Santosh, who was covered in yellow powder, was among a large crowd when he was seen using a double-barrelled gun to fire shots into the air. His supporters were cheering as he fired shots. Santosh reportedly carried out the act in the presence of a significant police deployment at the venue. Speaking to reporters Belagavi District Superintendent of Police Dr Bhimashankar Guled confirmed the development. 'We have come across the video showing Ramesh Jarkiholi's son firing shots into the air in a public place. Displaying firearms and firing in public is an offence. Based on this, we have registered a suo motu case and further legal action will follow after a detailed investigation,' Hans India quoted the SP as saying to the reporters. Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that the state the matter was being taken seriously. "A formal complaint has been filed, and legal action will follow accordingly. The police will perform their duty without succumbing to any kind of pressure. No one is above the law," he said, assuring a transparent investigation into the case. Santosh may be summoned for questioning soon, officials have indicated.
