AI roadmap focuses on ethics, innovation and equitable growth
The roadmap outlines five key priorities, namely, delivering measurable sectoral impact, embedding responsible AI, building talent pipelines, supporting local innovation, and ensuring coordinated government execution.
"Inclusivity means ensuring AI benefits all segments of society - across regions, income levels, ages and abilities - by expanding access to AI education and tools, supporting SMEs, startups and underserved communities, and promoting multilingual and culturally relevant AI solutions," NAIO told the New Straits Times.
Sustainability, meanwhile, covers economic resilience, environmental responsibility and evolving safeguards.
The Action Plan also aims to close the digital divide through literacy programmes in underserved communities, empower cooperatives with AI tools, and create real-world use cases in areas such as health, education and agriculture.
The office said public consultations on a comprehensive AI Governance Framework, which integrates ethical principles, regulatory recommendations and safeguards for responsible AI use, will also follow once its draft framework is approved.
Malaysia is currently ranked second in Asean and 23rd globally in AI readiness.
The government has made key strides since 2021, with major investments in supercomputing capacity, such as YTL-Nvidia AI Cloud, and chip development, such as ARM IP licensing.
"This step is crucial to ensure Malaysia's AI governance is transparent, inclusive and grounded in societal values, while aligning with global best practices," it added.
On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Malaysia aims to be an "inclusive and sustainable" Artificial Intelligence (AI) nation by 2030.
Under the 13th Malaysia Plan, the government wants the country to become a regional hub for digital technology innovation and the production of " Made by Malaysia" products and services, he said.

The fighting led to 15 deaths and displaced more than 100,000 people. On July 28, Malaysia, as the Asean chair, hosted a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur involving Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. The meeting produced an encouraging outcome, as Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

Malaysia clarifies rare earth export terms with US under trade deal
KUALA LUMPUR: The agreement allowing unrestricted rare earth exports to the US does not grant exclusive rights to America, clarified Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. He emphasised that Malaysia currently imposes no export restrictions on these materials to any nation. The terms, part of the Malaysia-US trade negotiations under Section 5 - Economic and National Security, also address controls on AI chip exports from the US to certain countries. Malaysia will enforce stricter measures under the Strategic Trade Act 2010 starting July 14, 2025. Tengku Zafrul noted that tariff negotiations expanded beyond US requests, resulting in Malaysia offering reduced or eliminated import duties for 98.4% of tariff lines. Sales tax exemptions for US agricultural imports like fruits and seafood were agreed upon, though excise duties remain. Local industry protections stay intact, with no blanket exemptions for US import licenses or full foreign equity liberalisation in strategic sectors. Bumiputera equity requirements are also upheld. On digital services tax (DST), Malaysia applies non-discriminatory policies. The government will no longer require US social media and cloud providers to contribute 6% of revenue to the Universal Service Provision Fund. A directive redirecting DNS traffic to local services was also repealed. To prevent trade loopholes, MITI will exclusively issue Non-Preferential Certificates of Origin for US-bound exports starting May 6, 2025. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 — The state visit by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, to Russia, which is at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, marks a new chapter in Malaysia-Russia bilateral relations. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the visit, taking place from August 5 to 10, is expected to boost strategic cooperation across multiple sectors, including bilateral trade, investment, higher education, technology and innovation, as well as people-to-people relations. 'Malaysia has the potential to attract new investments and advanced technologies from Russia, particularly in the fields of energy, aerospace, defence, and smart agriculture, in line with the Madani Economy framework that emphasises competitiveness, sustainability, and shared prosperity,' Anwar posted on Facebook today. More significantly, he noted that the visit reaffirms the role of the Malaysian monarchy as a respected pillar of national diplomacy, enhancing Malaysia's image as a neutral, open, and progressive nation on the global stage. The prime minister said it is also a very historic and significant event with Sultan Ibrahim being the first Malaysian Head of State to set foot in Russia for a state visit since diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1967. 'This reflects His Majesty's role as a symbol of national unity and a strategic contributor to strengthening Malaysia's international relations,' Anwar said. Earlier today, Anwar accompanied Sultan Ibrahim at the royal send-off ceremony held at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) base in Subang. Russia is currently Malaysia's ninth-largest trading partner among European nations and ranks 28th globally, with a bilateral trade value of RM11.46 billion (US$2.48 billion) in 2024.
