Chicago Blackhawks will open the NHL season on the road vs. the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers

Chicago Tribune21 hours ago
The Chicago Blackhawks will go on the road to play the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers as part of the NHL's season-opening tripleheader Oct. 7.
The game will kick off ESPN's slate at 4 p.m., with the New York Rangers hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 and the Los Angeles Kings hosting the Colorado Avalanche at 9:30.
The full NHL schedule will be announced at noon Wednesday on NHL Network.
The Hawks might be starting to feel like the visitors at a big homecoming game. It will be the fourth time in the last six seasons they've been the side note in the host team's celebratory opener — either a championship banner raising or an expansion team's first game.
Another recent opener pitted Hawks rookie Connor Bedard, in his NHL debut, against his idol, Sidney Crosby, and the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of another tripleheader. The Hawks' 4-2 upset on Oct. 10, 2023, in front of 18,411 at PPG Paints Arena drew 1.43 million viewers, a regular-season record for ESPN (excluding Winter Classics).
The Hawks will open on the road for an eighth consecutive season, dating to Oct. 4, 2019, in Prague against the Philadelphia Flyers as part of the NHL Global Series. The Hawks lost that game 4-3 in front of 17,463 at O2 Arena.

Social Media Rips Pat McAfee's Appearance at Home Run Derby

Apparently ESPN and MLB couldn't find anyone more synonymous with the sport than a former NFL punter for Monday night's Home Run Derby. The network and league decided to have Pat McAfee and his 'The Pat McAfee Show' co-host Ty Schmit introduce the players participating in the derby at the home of the Atlanta Braves — and it was quite the spectacle. Advertisement McAfee caught himself nearly slipping up when introducing Pittsburgh Pirates' Oneil Cruz, saying he was on the Steelers. McAfee also decided to tell a national audience that Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has the 'fattest a** in all of professional sports.' Fans were instantly tired of McAfee's act and ripped him across social media. Fans expressed frustration about ESPN forcing McAfee into baseball coverage. Many called his performance 'obnoxious' and 'exhausting,' with some noting that the 60,000-plus crowd at Truist Park seemed to tune him out during the introductions. Several users compared the situation to ESPN's overexposure of Stephen A. Smith, suggesting the network is making the same mistake by putting McAfee 'everywhere.' Others questioned why a former NFL punter was chosen to introduce MLB players at one of baseball's premier events. Inside, center Joe Tippmann is developing admirably. Veteran guards Alijah Vera-Tucker and John Simpson were terrific in 2024. ESPN is currently dropping their position rankings daily. More than 70 NFL executives, coaches, and scouts were polled to put together composite rankings. The interior offensive line version recently dropped. None of the Jets' three starters made the top 10, but both Vera-Tucker and Simpson received votes. Vera-Tucker played 916 snaps at right guard last season. The former USC standout was outstanding, having only allowed four sacks and 16 QB pressures all year long en route to a 76.3 pass-blocking grade, according to Pro Football Focus. Vera-Tucker was also a difference maker as a run blocker, scoring a 76.3 in that department. Simpson played even more snaps (951) than Vera-Tucker did. Simpson allowed just three sacks and 20 pressures, helping ensure Aaron Rodgers had a steady pocket to operate from. He also scored a 72.3 as a run blocker. The Jets are fortunate to have Vera-Tucker and Simpson at guard. New offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is inheriting a solid interior duo. He'll attempt to build a run-first offense with the dual-threat Justin Fields at quarterback and a solid offensive line.
