However, during monsoons, joint pains can increase and sometimes even interfere with the daily chores of a person. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Pramod Bhor, director - orthopedics and joint replacement surgery at Hiranandani Hospital Vashi – A Fortis Network Hospital, explained, 'This is because there is a direct correlation between monsoons and colder climates with joint pain. Due to changes in the humidity levels, atmospheric pressure and the sudden shift in the temperature and precipitation, blood pressure in the blood vessels is impacted.'
He added, 'As a result of the increased blood pressure, the body must work harder to pump blood, which can result in more joint pain. In addition, monsoons and colder climates can also lead to dehydration in the body, decreasing fluid concentration and worsening joint pain. Besides joint pain, monsoon can worsen arthritis-related symptoms, especially in people above 60.'

What are the possible causes of joint pain?
Understanding the root cause of joint pain is critical as it can help treat the condition effectively. According to Dr Bhor, some common causes of joint pain that can worsen in the monsoon season include:
One of the most common causes of joint pain is Arthritis. In India, it is projected that there are at least seven million patients who suffer from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), which is one of the most common forms of Arthritis. Moreover, Osteoarthritis, the second most common rheumatologic problem in the country, has a prevalence of 22 – 39 per cent in the country. Since Osteoarthritis and RA are degenerative joint diseases, they can cause inflammation, pain, and stiffness. RA and Osteoarthritis cannot be cured, so their symptoms must be tackled through medication and other forms of treatments. However, little is possible to prevent the disease once it has advanced.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can cause your body to attack itself. Besides damaging the organs and tissues, lupus can also cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints. As lupus is a chronic condition and takes a considerable time to diagnose (as it mimics other conditions, ruling out other diseases is time-consuming), some ways to combat this condition include medicines and healthier life choices.
Other conditions that can cause stiffness and pain in the affected joints include Bursitis (a condition in which the tiny, fluid-filled sacs in the body, called Bursae that cushion the bones, tendons and muscles near the joint become inflamed), Gout (which is a type of Arthritis that can appear suddenly) and in rare cases Bone Cancer.
What are the symptoms of joint pain?
Dr Bhor answered, 'In many cases, joint pain, especially during monsoon, will not require medical attention, but there is always an exception to this rule. A person should consult a medical expert when they do not know the reason behind the joint pain and are experiencing other symptoms.' He advised to consult a doctor immediately in the following scenarios:
The place around the joint is swollen, red, tender, or warm
The discomfort has persisted for more than three days
A fever with no other signs of the flu accompanies the ache
The pain is a result of a severe injury or accident
The joint seems deformed
The swelling in the joint occurs suddenly or if it looks immobile
The agony in the joint is extreme.

How to treat joint pain in monsoon?
Since joint pain in the monsoon is seasonal, Dr Pramod Bhor suggested that making lifestyle changes and combing home remedies with medications can help combat this issue in the long term. Some of them include the following:
Aerobic exercises that are easy on joints, like walking, bicycling, swimming and water aerobics, are highly recommended. It is essential to stay physically active throughout the year to ensure that symptoms related to joint pain do not flare up during this time. Doing at least 150 minutes of strenuous aerobic weekly is highly recommended. Further, exercise for ten minutes at a time if that helps to reduce the pain and always consult a doctor before doing anything strenuous. A good diet rich in essential nutrients can go a long way in helping fight inflammation and improve symptoms related to joint pain. For starters, a diet focusing on whole foods, like fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts and beans, and at the same time having minimal amounts of processed foods and saturated fat is ideal for overall health while at the same time helping manage disease activity as well. Some examples of food to add to such a diet include oily fish (Sardines, Mackerel, Salmon and fresh Tuna), dairy (milk, yoghurt and cheese), dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, collard greens), broccoli, green tea, garlic and nuts. Keep yourself warm with warm showers or baths, which can help ease joint pain. If required, dress in layers and increase the heat inside your house to prevent moisture retention, which can increase your symptoms. Consult a doctor for pain medications that can help reduce the severity of joint pain. Get sufficient sleep of at least eight hours. Get enough sleep for at least eight hours. Not getting quality good sleep can lower the threshold for pain, leading to increased joint pain and pain that was felt only in a particular part of the body becoming more widespread.

Scientists are investigating whether gut bacteria may play some role in neurological diseases like Parkinson's or autism. Research on the gut microbiome has exploded over the past 15 years. 'Now it's recognized that virtually all disease can be impacted by your microbiome," Michael Snyder, a professor of genetics at Stanford Medicine, tells Barron's. Snyder led a six-year study of the gut, mouth, nose, and skin microbiomes of 86 people. Our bodies harbor key bacteria in all these locations, but the most numerous and important bacteria are in the gut. For example, people with Type 2 diabetes had a less stable and less diverse microbiome. 'Our results underscore the idea that we each have individualized microbiomes in our bodies that are special to us," Snyder told the Stanford Medicine publication. Cleveland Clinic researchers are developing drugs that block gut microbes from producing TMAO. When given to mice, these drugs reduce heart disease, says Hazen, who led the Cleveland Clinic team. Despite research showing growing links between gut bacteria and various illnesses, Dr. Kashyap cautions that it doesn't necessarily mean the microbiome is the culprit. 'When we say the gut biome has been linked to a plethora of diseases, it means there is an association," he says. 'It doesn't mean the microbiome is causing all these diseases." Babies are born with a small amount of bacteria in their biome. Through exposure to their mother, to different foods, and to their environment, their biome quickly develops. By the age of three, it can be close to that of an adult. Once you have a complete biome, it takes more work to change it. For example, if you eat a lot of meat, you will have lots of bacteria linked to meat consumption. If you adopt a vegetarian diet, it will take time for your biome to change over to the bacteria needed for the consumption of plant products. 'It doesn't mean you can't change your microbiome," Dr. Kashyap says. 'It just means it will be much harder." Such claims are often accompanied by the argument that re-boiled water leads to the accumulation of allegedly hazardous substances including metals such as arsenic, or salts such as nitrates and fluoride. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD This isn't true. To understand why, let's look at what is in our tap water and what really happens when we boil it. Contents of tap water Let's take the example of tap water supplied by Sydney Water, Australia's largest water utility which supplies water to Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra region. From the publicly available data for the January to March 2025 quarter for the Illawarra region, these were the average water quality results: pH was slightly alkaline total dissolved solids were low enough to avoid causing scaling in pipes or appliances fluoride content was appropriate to improve dental health, and it was 'soft' water with a total hardness value below 40mg of calcium carbonate per litre. The water contained trace amounts of metals such as iron and lead, low enough magnesium levels that it can't be tasted, and sodium levels substantially lower than those in popular soft drinks. These and all other monitored quality parameters were well within the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines during that period. If you were to make tea with this water, re-boiling would not cause a health problem. Here's why. As long as the water you're using is within the guidelines for drinking water, you can't really concentrate it to harmful levels within your kettle. Representational image/Pixabay Difficult to concentrate such low levels of chemicals To concentrate substances in the water, you'd need to evaporate some of the liquid while the chemicals stay behind. Water evaporates at any temperature, but the vast majority of evaporation happens at the boiling point – when water turns into steam. During boiling, some volatile organic compounds might escape into the air, but the amount of the inorganic compounds (such as metals and salts) remains unchanged. While the concentration of inorganic compounds might increase as drinking water evaporates when boiled, evidence shows it doesn't happen to such an extent that it would be hazardous. Let's say you boil one litre of tap water in a kettle in the morning, and your tap water has a fluoride content of one mg per litre, which is within the limits of Australian guidelines. You make a cup of tea taking 200 ml of the boiled water. You then make another cup of tea in the afternoon by re-boiling the remaining water. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD On both occasions, if heating was stopped soon after boiling started, the loss of water by evaporation would be small, and the fluoride content in each cup of tea would be similar. But let's assume that when making the second cup, you let the water keep boiling until 100 ml of what's in the kettle evaporates. Even then, the amount of fluoride you would consume with the second cup (0.23 mg) would not be significantly higher than the fluoride you consumed with the first cup of tea (0.20 mg). The same applies to any other minerals or organics the supplied water may have contained. Let's take lead: the water supplied in the Illawarra region as mentioned above, had a lead concentration of less than 0.0001mg per litre. To reach an unsafe lead concentration (0.01mg per litre, according to Australian guidelines) in a cup of water, you'd need to boil down roughly 20 litres of tap water to just that cup of 200ml. As long as the water you're using is within the guidelines for drinking water, you can't really concentrate it to harmful levels within your kettle. Can a broken heart really kill you? Science says yes — here's why
Scientists now confirm that grief isn't just an emotional wound — it can be deadly. Representational Image/Pixabay The death of someone deeply loved is one of life's most painful experiences. But beyond the emotional toll, new research suggests that grief can actually shorten lives. A decade-long study from Denmark has found that people enduring the most severe and unrelenting grief were far more likely to die within 10 years of their bereavement than those who coped with it more mildly. Published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, the research tracked the health of more than 1,700 bereaved individuals for a decade and concluded that grief isn't just an emotional wound — it can trigger a cascade of physical consequences that may ultimately be fatal. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Tracking grief over a decade Beginning in 2012, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark recruited 1,735 people who had recently lost a loved one — most were women, and their average age was 62. Nearly two-thirds of participants had lost a partner, 27 per cent had lost a parent, and about seven percent had experienced the death of another close relative. The participants were asked to complete detailed surveys on their grief when they enrolled, then again after six months, and once more after three years. These questionnaires helped scientists categorise the severity of their grief over time and to observe how their symptoms evolved or persisted. The researchers identified five distinct grief patterns, or 'trajectories': Persistently low symptoms – 38 per cent of participants displayed relatively mild grief responses that didn't disrupt daily life significantly. High but easing symptoms – 18 per cent started with intense grief that gradually diminished. Moderate but easing symptoms – 29 per cent had mid-range symptoms that lessened over time. Delayed peak symptoms – 9 per cent began with lower levels of grief, which spiked about six months after the loss before tapering off. Persistent high symptoms – 6 per cent remained at consistently elevated levels of grief with little or no relief. It was this last group that faced the gravest risks. The numbers paint a stark picture Over the 10-year follow-up, researchers found that 26.5 per cent of those in the 'high grief' group had died, compared to just 7.3 per cent in the group with the lowest grief symptoms. Those with the most unrelenting sorrow had an 88 per cent higher mortality risk than those with milder grief. The study also found that participants suffering from persistent grief were far more likely to be prescribed antidepressants and to continue mental health therapy years after their loss. Their reliance on primary care and psychiatric services was notably higher in the first three years — though by year seven, these differences began to level off. Researchers stressed that the study didn't determine the exact causes of death among the bereaved. But it strongly reinforces previous evidence that intense emotional distress can lead to serious health consequences. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'We have previously found a connection between high grief symptom levels and higher rates of cardiovascular disease, mental health problems, and even suicide. But the association with mortality should be further investigated,' said Dr. Mette Kjærgaard Nielsen, a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University and a coauthor of the study, said in a statement. How grief impacts the body Grief triggers stress responses that can damage the body over time. One well-documented condition, broken heart syndrome — also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy — can appear suddenly after an intense emotional event, such as the loss of a loved one. In this condition, the heart temporarily enlarges and struggles to pump blood efficiently, creating symptoms that can be mistaken for a heart attack. While broken heart syndrome is more commonly diagnosed in women, men who experience it have a higher likelihood of dying from the condition, according to a separate study published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Heart Association. But the effects of grief are not limited to acute heart failure. Prolonged sorrow can lead to elevated blood pressure, chronic inflammation, disrupted hormone levels such as cortisol, and a weakened immune system. Previous research has shown that bereaved spouses and partners face higher risks of dying from heart disease or suicide in the first three years after their loss. For men, there is also an elevated risk of fatal respiratory or digestive issues. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Identifying those most vulnerable The research also shed light on who might be at greatest risk. Many in the 'high grief' category already showed signs of mental health fragility before their loss, with a higher likelihood of having been prescribed psychiatric medications. 'That suggests that they had signs of mental vulnerability which may cause greater distress on bereavement,' Nielsen explained. This insight could help doctors intervene earlier. 'A GP could look for previous signs of depression and other severe mental health conditions,' Nielsen said. 'They can then offer these patients tailored follow-up in general practice, or refer them to a private practice psychologist or secondary care. The GP may also suggest a bereavement follow-up appointment focusing on mental health.' Can therapy change the outcome? The study did not evaluate whether therapy or counselling reduced the likelihood of early death among the most grief-stricken participants. But Nielsen believes there is value in seeking help: 'I would say that they may benefit from specific grief therapy.' Grief therapy, support groups, and structured bereavement follow-ups may help blunt the long-term harm that chronic grief inflicts.
