Can a broken heart really kill you? Science says yes — here's why
Researchers outlined five distinct grief patterns following bereavement, with those in the most severe category facing a higher likelihood of dying within a decade. Representational Image/Pixabay
The death of someone deeply loved is one of life's most painful experiences.
But beyond the emotional toll, new research suggests that grief can actually shorten lives.
A decade-long study from Denmark has found that people enduring the most severe and unrelenting grief were far more likely to die within 10 years of their bereavement than those who coped with it more mildly.
Published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, the research tracked the health of more than 1,700 bereaved individuals for a decade and concluded that grief isn't just an emotional wound — it can trigger a cascade of physical consequences that may ultimately be fatal.

Tracking grief over a decade
Beginning in 2012, researchers at Aarhus University in Denmark recruited 1,735 people who had recently lost a loved one — most were women, and their average age was 62.
Nearly two-thirds of participants had lost a partner, 27 per cent had lost a parent, and about seven percent had experienced the death of another close relative.
The participants were asked to complete detailed surveys on their grief when they enrolled, then again after six months, and once more after three years.
These questionnaires helped scientists categorise the severity of their grief over time and to observe how their symptoms evolved or persisted.
The researchers identified five distinct grief patterns, or 'trajectories':
Persistently low symptoms – 38 per cent of participants displayed relatively mild grief responses that didn't disrupt daily life significantly.
High but easing symptoms – 18 per cent started with intense grief that gradually diminished.
Moderate but easing symptoms – 29 per cent had mid-range symptoms that lessened over time.
Delayed peak symptoms – 9 per cent began with lower levels of grief, which spiked about six months after the loss before tapering off.
Persistent high symptoms – 6 per cent remained at consistently elevated levels of grief with little or no relief.
It was this last group that faced the gravest risks.
The numbers paint a stark picture
Over the 10-year follow-up, researchers found that 26.5 per cent of those in the 'high grief' group had died, compared to just 7.3 per cent in the group with the lowest grief symptoms.
Those with the most unrelenting sorrow had an 88 per cent higher mortality risk than those with milder grief.
The study also found that participants suffering from persistent grief were far more likely to be prescribed antidepressants and to continue mental health therapy years after their loss.
Their reliance on primary care and psychiatric services was notably higher in the first three years — though by year seven, these differences began to level off.
Researchers stressed that the study didn't determine the exact causes of death among the bereaved. But it strongly reinforces previous evidence that intense emotional distress can lead to serious health consequences.

'We have previously found a connection between high grief symptom levels and higher rates of cardiovascular disease, mental health problems, and even suicide. But the association with mortality should be further investigated,' said Dr. Mette Kjærgaard Nielsen, a postdoctoral researcher at Aarhus University and a coauthor of the study, said in a statement.
How grief impacts the body
Grief triggers stress responses that can damage the body over time. One well-documented condition, broken heart syndrome — also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or Takotsubo cardiomyopathy — can appear suddenly after an intense emotional event, such as the loss of a loved one.
In this condition, the heart temporarily enlarges and struggles to pump blood efficiently, creating symptoms that can be mistaken for a heart attack.
While broken heart syndrome is more commonly diagnosed in women, men who experience it have a higher likelihood of dying from the condition, according to a separate study published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
But the effects of grief are not limited to acute heart failure. Prolonged sorrow can lead to elevated blood pressure, chronic inflammation, disrupted hormone levels such as cortisol, and a weakened immune system.
Previous research has shown that bereaved spouses and partners face higher risks of dying from heart disease or suicide in the first three years after their loss. For men, there is also an elevated risk of fatal respiratory or digestive issues.

Identifying those most vulnerable
The research also shed light on who might be at greatest risk.
Many in the 'high grief' category already showed signs of mental health fragility before their loss, with a higher likelihood of having been prescribed psychiatric medications.
'That suggests that they had signs of mental vulnerability which may cause greater distress on bereavement,' Nielsen explained.
This insight could help doctors intervene earlier. 'A GP could look for previous signs of depression and other severe mental health conditions,' Nielsen said.
'They can then offer these patients tailored follow-up in general practice, or refer them to a private practice psychologist or secondary care. The GP may also suggest a bereavement follow-up appointment focusing on mental health.'
Can therapy change the outcome?
The study did not evaluate whether therapy or counselling reduced the likelihood of early death among the most grief-stricken participants.
But Nielsen believes there is value in seeking help: 'I would say that they may benefit from specific grief therapy.'
Grief therapy, support groups, and structured bereavement follow-ups may help blunt the long-term harm that chronic grief inflicts.
Researchers say this is an area that warrants further investigation.

Ozempic maker's plight shows why managing markets matter for pharma giants
Ozempic-maker Novo Nordisk A/S saw its shares take a record plunge last week, sending their peak-to-trough collapse to 70 per cent and returning them to levels last seen in 2022. The Danish drug giant's purpose may be to improve people's lives, but investors' shrinking gains from its opening of the anti-obesity market matter too. Novo's blind spot has been failing to see its share price as an asset to manage — and exploit. For years, Novo had a relatively quiet life as one member of an insulin oligopoly alongside US peer Eli Lilly & Co. and France's Sanofi SA. While it wasn't a completely smooth ride — 2016 was dire — Novo has never seen operational and strategic challenges on the scale it's now facing. In developing Ozempic for diabetes and its sibling Wegovy for weight loss, the company suddenly found itself riding a tiger. On a five-year view, Novo is still the world's third-best performing major pharma stock, after Eli Lilly and Abbvie Inc. Perhaps if it had made a steadier journey to this point, instead of more than trebling in just over two years before its subsequent slide, there'd have been no drama. Try telling that to Lars Fruergaard Jorgensen. He has been replaced as chief executive officer. First, Novo should not have let market expectations run away. A key issue here was confidence it expressed that a successor to Wegovy, CagriSema, would achieve 25 per cent weight reduction. This long-held view within the company was expressed even a few weeks before trial data came in at 22.7 per cent in December. That was still an impressive achievement, but the stock market was badly disappointed. The shares tumbled amid concern the shortfall would further weaken Novo's competitive position. Company leadership is often overly preoccupied with how to get a share price up. But boards should worry about the stock price in both directions. As the cliché goes: under-promise and over-deliver. Some may say a company can't and shouldn't try to control its share price. But that doesn't let Novo off the hook. Should it not have taken advantage of the strength of its shares by using them as a currency to make an acquisition? That was an opportunity even before the price went into overdrive. Novo could have diversified, say, by buying a biotech specialising in related areas such heart disease. Instead, Novo's fortunes have yoked largely to Wegovy. It's hard to separate this from the governance of the firm. Novo has a controlling shareholder in the form of the Novo Nordisk Foundation. This has a majority of the votes but a minority economic interest. Such foundation ownership is common in Scandinavia. The stated objectives for the Novo investment include 'contributing positively to the lives of people' and 'generating competitive long-term financial results.' That doesn't mean Novo the foundation or Novo the drugmaker ignores ordinary shareholders. The foundation says it has an 'arm's length relationship' with Novo Nordisk, which in turn is governed by an independent board of directors. It also says it's 'particularly mindful of observing and respecting the rights of other shareholders.' Nor has the foundation been passive. It sought the CEO change. And last year it struck a major deal to expand manufacturing capacity. But the general idea that a long-term anchor shareholder is a good thing needs some qualification. Novo's ownership structure and sheer size protect it from a takeover or shareholder activism: These are the twin threats that otherwise focus boards' attention on their stock price. For a controlling shareholder with an indefinite investment horizon, the short-term share price — whether a bubble is inflating or deflating — is unlikely to be of much concern. In turn, such governance is more likely a brake than a spur to doing anything strategically opportunistic, especially if it involves issuing stock that might change the power dynamics. Small wonder that Novo has historically avoided transformational dealmaking in favour of commercial partnerships and small bolt-ons.

Scientists are investigating whether gut bacteria may play some role in neurological diseases like Parkinson's or autism. Research on the gut microbiome has exploded over the past 15 years. 'Now it's recognized that virtually all disease can be impacted by your microbiome," Michael Snyder, a professor of genetics at Stanford Medicine, tells Barron's. Snyder led a six-year study of the gut, mouth, nose, and skin microbiomes of 86 people. Our bodies harbor key bacteria in all these locations, but the most numerous and important bacteria are in the gut. For example, people with Type 2 diabetes had a less stable and less diverse microbiome. 'Our results underscore the idea that we each have individualized microbiomes in our bodies that are special to us," Snyder told the Stanford Medicine publication. 'Your genetics, your diet and your immune system are all shaping this ecosystem." Some elements of your biome are shaped in the early years of your life. Others can be affected by what you are eating now. Diets full of whole foods and fiber produce a more diverse biome, which is good. As in so many areas of health, the Mediterranean diet—which emphasizes whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and nuts—is believed to be beneficial for gut bacteria. Want to improve your biome? Up your fiber intake, says Snyder. The government recommends that women eat 25 grams a day of fiber, and that men eat 38. The best way to hit those numbers is to eat more whole foods and fewer processed foods. But if that proves too difficult, fiber supplements will help produce a more diverse biome, Snyder says. In a 2018 study, scientists were able to produce measurable drops in LDL cholesterol, the fat that causes plaque buildups in our arteries, by giving study participants regular doses of psyllium, a plant fiber used to treat constipation. No one knows for sure why there has been a surge in colon cancer cases among young adults in recent years. One theory is that they eat too much processed food, which encourages the growth of unhealthy gut bacteria. Another theory is that heavy use of antibiotics during childhood harmed gut bacteria. In the future, your doctor—whether she is a cardiologist, nephrologist, or endocrinologist—may prescribe treatments for your gut microbe that will help your heart disease, kidney disease, or diabetes. 'I think that is where the future lies," says Dr. Stanley Hazen, chair of the department of cardiovascular & metabolic sciences at the Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Research Institute. 'Understanding what the microbes in your gut are making and how it affects you." Some of the strongest links between the microbiome and disease come in cardiology, Dr. Hazen says. Consider trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolite that is produced by gut bacteria and the human body. 'It is a waste product of the foods we eat, especially the animal products," Dr. Hazen says. High TMAO levels in your blood are linked to arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, heart failure, and aortic aneurysms, Dr. Hazen says. You can reduce TMAO levels through the foods you eat, but its precursors are present in many foods, making it difficult to control by diet alone. Cleveland Clinic researchers are developing drugs that block gut microbes from producing TMAO. When given to mice, these drugs reduce heart disease, says Hazen, who led the Cleveland Clinic team. He expects versions of the drugs to be approved for humans eventually, and says they could change heart disease treatment. Hazen says he changed his own diet because of what he learned about the gut microbiome. 'I dramatically reduced the amount of red meat I eat. I used to eat meat in some form almost every day. Now it's a rarity." Gut bacteria help humans digest food. The human body doesn't have enzymes to break down all the nutrients and fibers we eat. It relies on bacteria to break down certain ones. 'Gut bacteria do have a strong role in modulating gut function," says Dr. Purna Kashyap, a Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist who studies the interaction between gut bacteria and dietary carbohydrates and how they influence the human digestive system. 'It's logical. They live there. They want the environment to be as conducive for their survival as possible." Despite research showing growing links between gut bacteria and various illnesses, Dr. Kashyap cautions that it doesn't necessarily mean the microbiome is the culprit. 'When we say the gut biome has been linked to a plethora of diseases, it means there is an association," he says. 'It doesn't mean the microbiome is causing all these diseases." Babies are born with a small amount of bacteria in their biome. Through exposure to their mother, to different foods, and to their environment, their biome quickly develops. By the age of three, it can be close to that of an adult. Once you have a complete biome, it takes more work to change it. For example, if you eat a lot of meat, you will have lots of bacteria linked to meat consumption. If you adopt a vegetarian diet, it will take time for your biome to change over to the bacteria needed for the consumption of plant products. 'It doesn't mean you can't change your microbiome," Dr. Kashyap says. 'It just means it will be much harder."
