Indian private sector in ‘developing' stage: Jitendra Singh
'We need a robust, developed private sector. There are some gaps...but that's also because past policy has not favoured the robust development of the private sector. It is only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi came that this has started happening. The space sector opened up to the private sector only four to five years ago, and so their capacity building has started only just now. Several projects have been rolled out, but we don't have the private sector acumen. This will take time, but there is now a shift in the policy,' said Dr. Singh.
He was responding to a question from The Hindu on why, despite the government's multiple claims of championing private sector participation in the space sector, no private company was selected to manufacture the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). Last week, public sector defence company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) bagged a Transfer of Technology (ToT) deal, valued at ₹511 crore from the Indian Space Research Organisation to build and operate Small Satellite Launch Vehicles (SSLVs).
Bidding for SSLV
The SSLV is a three-stage vehicle to launch satellites that weigh less than 500 kg into the lower earth orbit (LEO). Apart from the HAL, which had applied independently, two other technically qualified bidders were shortlisted: Alpha Design Technologies Ltd. (ADT), Bengaluru, leading a consortium with Agnikul Cosmos and Walchand Industries Ltd.; and Bharat Dynamics Ltd., Hyderabad, leading a consortium with Skyroot Aerospace, Keltron and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). ADT is a subsidiary of the Adani conglomerate. Among the three, the HAL emerged as the highest bidder.
Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, which oversees the BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) programme that funds biotechnology start-ups since 2012, said that while a start-up listing in the public markets was a sign of success, it was also important to consider market equity. 'The equity of biotechnology start-ups is currently around ₹7,000 crore...they have longer incubation periods,' he said in response to a query from The Hindu on when an Indian biotech start-up would hit the public markets.
Dr. Singh was addressing a press conference on the achievements of scientific departments — the Departments of Science and Technology, Biotechnology, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Informing this a spokesperson of the district administration said that experienced and capable NGOs are requested to send their proposals to run the rehabilitation centre being run for the beggars till 5.00 pm on July 15, 2025. The NGOs registered under Society Registration/Firm/Public Trust Act will be eligible to apply. India, US to finalise 10-year framework to boost defence ties: Pentagon
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterpart Pete Hegseth have agreed to firm up a 10-year framework to further expand defence and strategic ties between India and the US. The decision on the defence framework was mentioned in a Pentagon statement that was released on Wednesday, a day after Singh and US Defence Secretary Hegseth held a phone conversation. "Secretary Hegseth and Minister Singh agreed to sign the next 10-year US-India Defence Framework when they next meet this year," it said. It said the two sides discussed pending major US defence sales to India and the imperative of close defence industrial cooperation between the two countries. "Secretary Hegseth emphasized the priority the United States places on India as its key defense partner in South Asia," the Pentagon said. It said the two leaders reviewed the "considerable progress" both countries have made toward achieving the defense goals set out in the February 2025 joint statement by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "The two discussed pending major US defence sales to India and the imperative of close defense industrial cooperation between the two countries," the Pentagon readout said without providing further details. In the phone conversation on Tuesday, Singh urged Hegseth to expedite the delivery of GE F404 engines to power the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, people familiar with the matter said. Singh also pitched for early finalisation of a proposed deal between Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and US defence major GE Aerospace for joint production of F414 jet engines in India, they said The delays in supply of F404 engines by GE Aerospace has resulted in HAL missing the deadline to supply Tejas Mark 1A aircraft to the Indian Air Force. An Indian readout on Tuesday said Singh and Hegseth discussed a wide canvas of issues ranging from long-term cooperation in the defence sector, including training and military exchanges, to expanding industry collaborations. "They agreed to further build upon the momentum of this critical & mutually beneficial partnership across all its pillars such as interoperability, integration of defence industrial supply chains, logistics sharing, increased joint military exercises and cooperation with other like-minded partners," it said.

Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court has ordered that a fresh petition challenging the MP Private Universities Regulatory Commission chairman's appointment be clubbed with an earlier plea accusing him of corruption. Now, the two petitions against Prof Bharat Sharan Singh will be heard simultaneously. Advocate Anil Singh from Bhopal, in his petition, said Prof Singh's appointment as the commission chairman was contrary to rules and illegal. The petitioner argued that he was appointed chairman of the commission in 2020 on deputation. Earlier, Singh was posted on deputation at SN Shukla Private University in Shahdol. He said the salary of Prof Singh at the private university was Rs 3.5 lakh per month, but he preferred to come as chairman of the commission, where his salary is Rs 2.10 lakh per month. Following initial arguments, a bench of acting chief justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and justice Vinay Saraf ordered clubbing of the two petitions.
