Daily Mirror02-05-2025
Ryan Garcia will make his highly-anticipated return to the ring later this evening, but is set for a tough night at the office in the shape of Rolly Romero
Ryan Garcia is set to return to the ring for the first time in a little over a year tonight when he takes on a familiar face in Rolly Romero.
The boxing stars were once sparring partners back in the day. While Romero was quick to throw his weight around the ring in the remerged viral footage, it was over eight years ago, and the pair finally have the chance to settle the score once and for all. It's been a tough year for Garcia after the New York State Athletic Commission had suspended him for a failed drug test following his win over Devin Haney in April 2024. However, he has since had his suspension lifted.

"The suspension has been lifted as all conditions of the Consent Order have been met," a NYSAC spokesperson said in a statement to ESPN. Garcia's victory was overturned to a no contest and he was suspended for a year. As for Romero, the former world champion scored an impressive decision win over Manuel Jaimes in his last outing. And so, here's everything you need to know about tonight's fights...

What time will Ryan Garcia vs Rolly Romero start tonight?
Tonight's blockbuster event is scheduled to take place in Times Square, New York City. The main pay-per-view card is scheduled to get underway at around 11pm BST (5pm CT / 3pm PT / 6pm ET). Devin Haney's showdown with Jose Ramirez will likely start at around 12am Saturday morning BST (6pm CT / 4pm PT / 7pm ET). In the main event, Romero will make the walk to the ring first at around 1am Saturday morning BST (7pm CT / 5pm PT / 8pm ET) with Garcia set to immediately follow. The fight should not start later than this but could be brought forward if the undercard fights are completed earlier than expected.
How to watch Ryan Garcia vs Rolly Romero on TV and live stream
Fans will be able to stream the event live on DAZN pay-per-view. The event can be purchased for £21.99 in the UK, $59.99 in the US, and the equivalent of $24.99 for the rest of the world. A subscription for DAZN starts at £14.99 a month.

Ryan Garcia: 'I retired Luke Campbell, I retired Javier Fortuna, and I'm about to retire Rolly and be done with these dudes. Whenever I get a feeling about retiring someone, I just know it. I know once I knock him out, he's done. I'm gonna take control of the fight right away. I have to control the ring. He's not a better boxer than me, but he's gonna try to do things to make me uncomfortable. Ring generalship is my best friend when I step into the ring.'
Rolly Romero: 'I'm great. I'm happy right now. This is just another normal day for me…It's a historic event in Times Square and I'm happy to be headlining. This is going to be a legendary moment for all of boxing. This fight was destined to happen. I called it. I knew it was gonna be at 147 pounds and be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. Look at this.'

Claressa Shields eases past Lani Daniels to defend undisputed heavyweight title

Claressa Shields retained her undisputed women's heavyweight championship with a commanding unanimous decision over Lani Daniels on Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The judges scored the bout 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91 in favor of Shields, who improved to 17-0 (3 KOs). It marked the third straight main event appearance in Detroit for the 30-year-old Flint native and two-time Olympic gold medalist, who remains the only boxer in the four-belt era to become an undisputed champion in three different weight classes. Daniels (11-3-2, 1 KO), a 37-year-old former IBF light heavyweight titleholder from New Zealand, offered little early offense and spent the opening rounds circling the ring. Shields was forced to press the action and gradually took control with superior timing, footwork and punch variety. By the middle rounds, Shields had closed the distance and was landing consistent body shots and combinations to the head. Daniels began to stand her ground in the sixth and seventh rounds but struggled to match Shields' output or accuracy. The final rounds featured more two-way action, but Shields remained in control through cleaner shot selection and sharper counters. She outlanded Daniels in every round and neutralized her opponent's late pressure with disciplined defense and calculated exchanges. The fight capped an 11-bout card broadcast on Dazn and drew an announced crowd of 15,366. Shields' previous two appearances at Little Caesars Arena also headlined boxing's return to a venue that hadn't hosted a major card until her 2023 win over Maricela Cornejo. In the co-main event, Detroit's Tony Harrison (30-4-1, 21 KOs) returned after a 28-month layoff and scored a unanimous-decision win over Edward Diaz (15-7, 12 KOs) despite being dropped in the ninth round. Harrison, a former super-welterweight champion, was fighting for the first time since losing to Tim Tszyu in 2023.

‘I'm not joking' – Boxing champion sensationally backs Jake Paul to KO heavyweight star Anthony Joshua

JAKE PAUL has sensationally been backed to knock out Anthony Joshua by a boxing world champion. The YouTuber-turned-prizefighter audaciously called out two-time heavyweight champ AJ earlier in the year on his podcast. 5 5 It sparked a behind-the-scenes back and forth which has since escalated to genuine talks between the two camps to make the fight happen. But the likes of Derek Chisora have pleaded with Paul to think twice about seriously facing 6f6 6in and 18 STONE Joshua. WBA welterweight world champ Rolly Romero on the other hand has actually backed Paul to somehow beat AJ. Romero, 29, told Boxing Social: I think they should fight. 'I got Jake Paul. I got Jake Paul. I'm not even joking, I got Jake Paul. Knockout. "I'm telling you, straight up, I'm not messing around Jake Paul for real." Paul is 12-1 in his career with his lone loss in the ring coming against Tommy Fury in 2023. And Fury's brother Tyson unsurprisingly threw a dig Joshua's way by joining Romero in predicting a Paul KO. He told Ring Magazine: "I just think Jake Paul would knock AJ out. I think AJ is a spent force, and Jake Paul is on the rise. 5 CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS 5 "I like his new heavyweight look - bit chubby, bit bulky. [He's] getting there." Fury even claimed he would bet £1MILLION on Paul to beat his long-time rival AJ. Derek Chisora says Jake Paul is doing 'great things for boxing' but pleads with him not to fight Anthony Joshua Joshua, 35, is yet to return since his KO loss to Daniel Dubois, 27, in September and has recently undergone elbow surgery. Paul, 28, meanwhile beat ex-middleweight champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, 39, over ten rounds in June at cruiserweight. He dropped TWO STONE after beating Mike Tyson in November when the heavyweight great controversially returned to the ring aged 58. But Chisora, 41, warned that fighting Joshua is a completely different story in a desperate plea to Paul. He told SunSport's Split Decision show: "Listen, Jake Paul is doing so many great things for boxing, I don't care what anybody he says. "He should fight Roy Jones next. I would tell him not to fight Joshua. Because Joshua would actually smoke him out for the sake of it. "I'd tell him, you've got a good thing going on. Fight Roy Jones, fight Floyd Mayweather, fight all these guys. Don't fight AJ." 5
