MNF alleges infra funds misuse in Mizoram
Mizo National Front
(MNF) on Friday raised serious concerns over the utilisation of funds sanctioned for key infrastructure projects in Mizoram, questioning whether the money was misused or misappropriated by the Mizoram govt.
The alleged fund embezzlement was brought to light during a meeting of the DONER Consultative Committee held on Thursday afternoon at the Parliament Annex Committee Room. The meeting was attended by several MPs from the northeastern states and key officials, MNF said in a statement.
According to the statement, during the meeting, Mizoram's lone Rajya Sabha member, K Vanlalvena, representing MNF, pointed out that funds allocated under the ministry of DONER for the repair of the Keitum-N Mualcheng-Zawlsei road in central Mizoram's Serchhip district, under the 2023-2024 budget, were yet to be utilised.
Despite approval for the repair works, the projects did not commence, and Vanlalvena suggested that the allocated money might have been diverted to other purposes by the present state govt.
The meeting decided that the matter should be addressed in the next meeting for further investigation.
The MP told TOI that around Rs 200 crore was sanctioned by the ministry of DoNER for the repair of the road.
In addition, the director of fisheries and animal husbandry from Mizoram raised concerns about the SNA SPARSH Scheme, for which the central govt sanctioned Rs 1,000 lakh in April 2025.

Central officials pointed out that the Mizoram govt had not utilised the funds, and this non-utilisation might affect further sanctions amounting to Rs 700 lakh.
MNF also demanded a white paper on the use of funds sanctioned in April 2025, stressing the need for accountability and transparency in the spending process. They called for the central govt to step in and ensure that the funds are utilised effectively for the benefit of the people of Mizoram.

No slums will be demolished, open to policy change: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta
Facing fire from the Opposition and dissent within party ranks over the ongoing slum demolitions in the Capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Friday said her government is open to amending Delhi's slum policy — countering claims that the BJP is reneging on its promises to the urban poor. Calling slum dwellers the 'backbone of Delhi's working class,' Gupta announced a halt on all demolitions unless alternative housing is provided in advance. The Delhi government has also made it clear that no slum will be removed in the Capital. Gupta directed land-owning agencies like the Railways, Delhi Development Authority, and other departments to 'immediately cease' any eviction drives and warned that her government would approach the courts if necessary. Her statement comes weeks after eviction notices were served to residents of a jhuggi cluster in R K Puram, an area where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier assured slum dwellers that 'no jhuggi would be demolished'. The BJP has also faced internal criticism from its MLAs and booth workers, who had campaigned extensively in slums with the slogan 'jahan jhuggi, wahan makan'. Since the BJP government has taken charge in Delhi, major slums have been demolished over the past few months: Madrasi Camp (340 structures demolished), Bhoomiheen Camp (344 structures demolished), Jailer Wala Bagh (300 structures) and Taimoor Nagar (100 structures). Criticising both AAP and Congress, accusing them of historic neglect and using slum residents merely as 'vote banks', Gupta said: 'The Congress named colonies after their leaders but gave nothing. The AAP promised the world, but didn't even ensure clean drinking water or drainage. They pushed these communities into neglect and addiction.' She also announced that 50,000 unallotted flats in Outer Delhi — long left in disrepair — will be renovated under the PMAY-Urban and handed over to slum dwellers. The Centre has allowed Rs 732 crore, previously underutilised under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, to be repurposed for this housing initiative. In response to Gupta, AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj said, 'Rekha Gupta and her party have been bluffing the poor residents of Delhi for many months now. If Rekha Gupta is actually serious about what she is saying, then she should ask the central government and its agencies — DDA, Railways, and L&DO — to withdraw cases against these JJ clusters in the High Court and the Supreme Court.' Attempting to reframe the demolition narrative, Gupta claimed the BJP is the first government to pair evictions with actual housing handovers, unlike her predecessors. 'Previous governments simply watched slums grow. We are finally giving people homes — and dignity,' she said. She said slums are an inseparable part of the national capital and asserted that her government is making sincere efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi.

CBCI president meets BJP state chief, demands nuns' release
Thrissur: BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Friday met Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) president and Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath over the arrest of two nuns in Chhattisgarh. However, the meeting didn't appear to have gained much ground in assuaging the wounded feelings of the Christian community as Thazhath stuck to the church's stance that the arrest of two nuns was in effect denial of religious freedom and unconstitutional. Addressing a joint media briefing in Chandrasekhar's presence, Thazhath said immediate steps must be taken for the release of the two nuns. He said attacks and discriminations against Christians were on the rise across the country, though the forms may vary in different states, and govt must take steps to curb them. "Those two sisters were working for poor leprosy patients. They were there (in Chhattisgarh) for about 40 years. We are deeply pained and saddened that they have been arrested. They should be released at the earliest. Govt must ensure justice and security for minorities, particularly to those nuns. We should be able to live as free citizens of this country," said Thazhath. He, however, expressed happiness that Chandrasekhar was the first to respond to the request to intervene in the issue. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas in Dubai | Search Ads Get Info Undo "We are particularly happy that he has come here to brief us about the steps being taken by the Prime Minister and Union home minister in the issue," the archbishop said. Auxiliary Bishop Mar Tony Neelankavil was also part of the closed-door meeting which lasted for about half-an-hour. Chandrasekhar said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah assured him that Chhattisgarh govt wouldn't oppose the nuns' bail application. "They have asked to wait till the legal process is completed. Our utmost consideration is to ensure that the nuns get bail and they come out of detention. We shouldn't politicise the issue. Many are trying to take political advantage from the issue. Opposition leaders were performing political drama in front of the jail in Chhattisgarh. It is due to a misunderstanding that the cases were registered against the nuns,'' said Chandrasekhar. The first massive public protest in the country against the nuns' arrest was held in Thrissur on Tuesday under the leadership of Mar Thazhath. The state has been witnessing a series of such protests in different areas since then.

Arunachal Cong chief meets Kharge, seeks support on critical state issues
1 2 Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bosiram Siram on Thursday met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi and sought the party's support on several critical issues affecting the frontier state. During the meeting, Siram sought the party's support on the need to amend Article 371(H), opposition to the proposed 11,000MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), and the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). The APCC also submitted a memorandum outlining concerns over what it termed as the "inadequate" constitutional safeguards provided under Article 371(H) of the Arunachal Pradesh Statehood Act, 1986. The provision, Siram said, fails to protect tribal customs, land ownership rights and the interests of indigenous communities in terms of natural resource management. He contrasted this with stronger protections available to neighbouring states such as Nagaland and Mizoram under Articles 371(A) and 371(G) and urged the party to push for constitutional amendments. Raising the alarm over the proposed SUMP, Siram informed Kharge that the 11,000-MW mega dam with a proposed height of over 300 metres poses a serious threat to the ecology, cultural heritage, and demographics of the Siang region. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Roof Repair or Replacement? He flagged concerns over the use of Central Armed Police Forces to push forward survey and drilling activities without the Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) of local communities — a move he described as reminiscent of "colonial-style dominance". While reiterating the Congress' commitment to development, he maintained that such projects should not come at the cost of indigenous lives, livelihoods, and heritage. "We are not against development, but we are against destructive development," he said. Siram further called for the rollback of the New Pension Scheme (NPS) and the reinstatement of the OPS, arguing that the NPS leaves govt employees vulnerable to market fluctuations and fails to guarantee post-retirement security.
