Hernandez fires parting shot at AC Milan
French international Theo Hernandez, who has joined Saudi club Al-Hilal, took a swing at AC Milan's leadership as he bid farewell to the club and its fans on social media.
Milan finished eighth in Serie A last season amid vociferous protests from supporters against the club's American owners RedBird.
In a farewell post on Instagram, Hernandez, a left back who can play in midfield, echoed that criticism.
'Milan has always been my priority,' he wrote. 'But, unfortunately, not everything depends on one person. The direction the club has taken and some recent decisions do not reflect the values or ambition that brought me here.'

Alcaraz withdraws from Toronto event for Wimbledon recovery
World number two Carlos Alcaraz, a fivetime Grand Slam singles champion, has withdrawn from next week's ATP Canadian Open in Toronto to recover from Wimbledon, organizers said on Monday. The 22-yearold Spaniard lost to topr a n k e d Ja n n i k Sinner in the Wim - ble - don final earlier this month in a bid for his third consecutive crown in the grass-court classic. 'I'm really sad to have to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto,' Alcaraz said in a statement. 'I tried my best to be ready for the tournament as it's one I really enjoy playing, but it comes just too soon for me as I recover after Wimbledon. I wish the event well and look forward to being back on the Canadian courts next year.' Alcaraz had his best Canada run in 2023, falling to American Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals. 'It's disappointing to lose a player of Carlos' quality, as we k n ow our fans were looking forward to watching him,' tournament director Karl Hale said. 'Although he has been on the scene for a while, he's still at the beginning of his career and there will be plenty of opportunities for Canadians to see him again in the future.' American Sebastian Korda, the world number 33 struggling with a leg injury, and Poland's 38th-ranked Hubert Hurkacz, fighting a knee injury, have also withdrawn.

Venus Williams wins doubles comeback match at DC Open
AFP | Washington Seven-time Grand Slam single champion Venus Williams returned to competitive tennis after a 16-month hiatus on Monday with a doubles victory at the WTA and ATP DC Open. The 45-year-old American joined compatriot Hailey Baptiste to defeat Canada's Eugenie Bouchard and US teen Clervie Ngounoue 6-3, 6-1 in a firstround match. 'After the match Hailey asked me, 'How did that feel?' It's probably even harder to play the doubles first because I'm not a doubles player,' Williams said. 'So it's great to have her to kind of hold the team up. She has had the experience. She served first because she has been playing all year and playing well. I think that helped me a lot. 'I think also just to get the feel for the ball. Obviously singles I have a little more experience even though doubles I have had some great results. 'It's just nice to be able to play. Where I am at this year is so much different where I was at last year. It's night and day, being able to be here and prepare for the tournament as opposed to preparing for surgery a year ago.' Williams was set to make her return to singles later yesterday in the main court night feature match against American Peyton Stearns. A crowd of about 3,000 spectators watched the doubles match, including NBA star Kevin Durant, who is from Washington. 'We were both so focused and after the match, I was, like, 'Did you see Kevin Durant walk in?' She was, like, 'Yeah,'' Williams said. Fans chanting 'K-D' made it tough for Baptiste to focus but she was happy to have a famous fan in the stands. 'It's sick that he came out to support us,' she said. 'It's really cool.' 'I was, like, 'I want to show KD what I can do. Hit the ball to me,'' Williams said. 'They hit every ball to you. I was, like, OK, whatever. However we win is fine.'

Paret-Peintre delivers Tour de France home win in Mont Ventoux thriller
Valentin Paret- Peintre bagged a first home win on an enthralling stage 16 of the Tour de France yesterday pipping Ireland's Ben Healy atop the 1910m altitude Mont Ventoux finish line. Behind them Jonas Vingegaard attacked overall leader Tadej Pogacar relentlessly but the defending champion tracked the Dane all the way up the 15km ascent to extend his lead by two seconds. Trailing by 4min 13sec at the start of this stage Vingegaard attacked with 9km to climb on Mont Ventoux, whose eery upper reaches resemble a lunar landscape. They were eclipsed, however, by a frantic fight for the line and the stage win between EF's Healy and Soudal Quick-Step;s Paret-Peintre who relieved home hopes on a Tour raced entirely on French soil. Vingegaard and his Visma team did everything they could to hurt the Team UAE leader Pogacar, but the 26-year-old resisted all they threw at him despite being isolated from his teammates early in the climb which is already etched into Tour folklore after epic past battles. Chris Froome ran part of the way up during a frantic wait for mechanical assistance, while even the great Eddy Merckx once needed oxygen at the summit. Tom Simpson died here in 1967 after collapsing on a baking climb but asking to be helped back onto the saddle. Stage 17 should be one for the sprinters as Tim Merlier hopes to add to his two stage wins and current green jersey Jonathan Milan also targets a second win at the 700m straight run to the finish line at Valence. The weather however could rewrite the script with 50kph winds forecast along the 170km run.
