Mohammed Siraj fined: Cricket legends back India pacer after match fees deduction

India Todaya day ago
Cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar and Nasser Hussain have jumped to the defence of Mohammed Siraj after the Indian pacer was slapped with a fine after his altercation with Ben Duckett on Day 4. As the Lord's Test became a fiery contest from the final over Day 3, the action on Sunday saw Siraj dismiss Duckett and have an animated celebration. As the Indian pacer was celebrating, his shoulder bumped into Duckett and this was noted by the match officials. Siraj was fined 15 percent of his match fees for the incident, which Gavaskar felt was a bit harsh. Speaking to India Today after the game, the Indian legend said he didn't see anything wrong it and felt it wasn't a send-off for the batter.advertisementGavaskar also feels that it was Duckett who initiated the contact during the incident.
"I actually didn't see anything wrong with that celebration because he wasn't giving the batter a send-off. Actually, when you give a send off, that is where I think you need to be fined. But if you're in the face saying, got you, I don't think that is any reason for the player to be summoned before the match referee."ENG vs IND, 3rd TEST HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD"I think it was just over the top, as far as the matchup fee is concerned. If you see the contact that happened, it was Ben Duckett who's came there. Siraj is not in this. Siraj's shoulder is a bit this way. Duckett is the one who's made the contact. Well, I mean, there you are. I think the match referee has taken the call. Hopefully Siraj will celebrate subtly, maybe, because at the end of the day, all you want is to keep on getting wickets. It doesn't matter what else happens," said Gavaskar.'Don't want 22 robots in a game of cricket'Speaking to Sky Sports, Hussain said that he wasn't a fan of the call made and said that in a game of cricket, it is natural that a fiery player may go a bit overboard with his celebrations. The former England captain said he doesn't want to see 22 robots playing and a quiet word from the match referee should have been enough for Siraj."[That punishment] is just not for me. These are not robots, these are people giving it absolutely everything, ball after ball on a hot week. You're playing for a country passionate about cricket, you're passionate. Sometimes as a fiery individual you will go slightly over the mark.""You do not want 22 robots, you want a bit of fight, so a quiet word from the match referee would have been enough for me," said Hussain.- EndsYou May Also Like

India vs England Women's ODI Series 2025, Live streaming: All you need to know

Riding high after their historic T20I series win over England, the Indian women's cricket team is set to take on the hosts in a three-match ODI series starting Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. This series marks a crucial phase in India's preparations for the upcoming ICC Women's ODI World Cup, which will be held on home soil later this year. After edging out England 3-2 in the T20Is-India's first-ever T20I series win against the English side-Harmanpreet Kaur's team is brimming with confidence and intent to carry that momentum into the 50-over last ODI assignment was the Tri-series in May, featuring Sri Lanka and South Africa, where they emerged victorious with dominant performances. In that series, India's approach reflected a significant shift in mindset. They posted totals of 276, 275, 337, and 342, showcasing a renewed emphasis on aggressive batting. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged this change, noting that the team has been focused on consistently scoring more than 300 runs in ODIs to give the bowlers ample cushion. She also highlighted how the inclusion of multiple spin options, seen in the T20I series, has helped India gain an edge in the middle overs. Concentration Intensity Smiles Preps in full flow ahead of the start of the ODI series #TeamIndia | #ENGvIND BCCI Women (@BCCIWomen) July 15, 2025One of the most exciting developments for India has been the rise of young opener Pratika Rawal, who once again gets the nod ahead of veteran Shafali Verma. Rawal has been in sensational form, having recently become the fastest batter to reach 500 runs in women's ODIs. She will be joined at the top and middle order by the experienced and dependable Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, and hard-hitting Richa Ghosh. The Indian batting unit is further strengthened by the finishing abilities of Deepti Sharma and Amanjot Kaur, both of whom add depth and power to the lower order. England, meanwhile, will be buoyed by the return of two of their most crucial players. Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, who missed the final three T20Is due to a groin injury, is fit again and will lead the side. Also back is the world No. 1 ODI bowler Sophie Ecclestone, making her return after a knee injury that kept her out of action during the West Indies series. Were Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Forced To Retire? 'It's The Policy Of BCCI...'

Last Updated: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket within days of each other leaving raising eyebrows. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has clarified whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were asked to retire from Test cricket. Both Rohit and Kohli announced their respective Test retirements within days of each other earlier this year even as the duo was expected to be on the flight to UK for the ongoing five-Test series between India and England. The decisions were surprising considering neither gave any prior hint. Rohit, in an interview to former Australia captain Michael Clarke, had expressed how he was looking forward to leading India in England while it later emerged that Kohli too was eager to get back his Test form in England, hoping for bucketful of runs. It did give rise to speculations over the retirement not being their own calls. However, Shukla has cleared the air, 'once and for all." 'I want to make it very clear once and for all," Shukla was quoted as saying by news agency ANI on Tuesday. 'We are all feeling the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The decision to retire was made by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on their own. It is the policy of BCCI that we never tell any player to retire. It was their call." Indian Teams Meet King Charles III 76-year-old British Monarch King Charles III met with the Indian men and women cricket teams in the gardens of Clarence House in Lond on Tuesday. He discussed cricket with the likes of Test captain Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant. 'It was amazing. I think he (King Charles) is very kind and generous… we had some really good conversations," Gill told media after the audience. King Charles III also enquired about India's Lord's Test defeat as they came close to chasing down 193 on the final day before an unfortunate dismissal ended their hopes. 'He did tell us that the way our last batsman (Mohammed Siraj) got out was quite unfortunate, the ball rolling on to the stumps. And he was just asking us, 'how did you feel after that?' And we told him it was an unfortunate match for us… but hopefully, we'll have better luck in both the next games," Gill said. IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'Has he actually said that?' Ex-England cricketer baffled by Indian player's comment at Lord's

Jofra Archer catches out Washington Sundar during day five of the 3rd Test Match at Lord's on July 14(Photo by) India fell to England in the 3rd Test of the five-match series after a hard-fought battle at Lord's. While the defeat means that India have now dropped to 2-1 behind the hosts in the series, it makes the penultimate Test a must-win affair for Shubman Gill and his men. However, spirits in the Indian camp were sky high ahead of the second innings after the hosts were bowled out for 192. India star Washington Sundar , who played an impressive part in India's efforts to bowl out England in the second innings in particular, was extremely confident of securing the win. In conversation with the media, the 25-year-old even went on the record to state that India 'will' win. This elicited a sharp reaction from England batter and former captain Jos Buttler . Speaking in the "For The Love Of Cricket " podcast alongside Stuart Broad, the Englishman argued that Sundar must have gotten his words wrong. "I heard it and then I thought, has he actually said that?" said Buttler. He was referring to a clip where the young player told the media that 'It's going to be amazing when we win the game and go 2-1 up in this series. "I wonder if he's just got his words out wrong," said Buttler. Buttler also said that Sundar's comments were made with such confidence that showing that clip to the hosts ahead of the final day would have been enough to get them fired up and charged to win the game on Monday. Washington Sundar press conference: On Gautam Gambhir's support, last over drama, winning at Lord's He proceeded to claim that Sundar must have regretted his words immediately after the interview. Broad however, backed Sundar, saying that his extremely confident words were most probably owed to fatigue and confusion after the day's play. Poll How do you feel about India's chances in the final two Tests of the series? Confident they'll win. Nervous about their performance. In the end, Sundar and the rest of his teammates were forced to admit defeat on Monday as England pulled off a stunning victory on Day 5. The hosts successfully managed to restrict India to 170 despite a marathon effort from Ravindra Jadeja. Sundar ended up going out for a duck in the second innings as Jofra Archer claimed his wicket.
