Volkswagen's Big ID.4 Changes Should Worry Tesla And Ford

Miami Herald14-07-2025
Volkswagen recently reported sales for the second quarter of 2025, and it made for grim reading if you're a fan of the brand's electric crossover, the ID.4. Sales of this model for Q2 were 1,992 units in the U.S., a massive 65% decline over the same period last year. This result could be down to two things: a market more hesitant to EVs, and increased competition in the segment.
So perhaps it comes as good news that Volkswagen is planning a major update of its ID.4 in 2026; in June, VW USA only said the 2026 ID.4 would get a mid-model-year facelift, without mentioning any details. Although technically a facelift, the update is said to be so significant that the crossover will appear more like an all-new model. Here's what's in store.
VW CEO Thomas Schäfer told Autocar that the updated crossover will be "really beautiful," with a design that more closely resembles other VW EVs like the ID.2.
"We'll redo the ID.4 completely inside and out," said Schäfer. "It will be a completely different car - a huge step up."
Known internally as the "electric Tiguan," Schäfer said next year's ID.4 "needed to fit in with the new design language going forward, since it is still our most important electric vehicle in numbers."
While the current ID.4 is a neatly styled crossover, it's not as sportily styled as rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Chevrolet Equinox EV, so a restyle will be welcome. Of course, there's also Tesla's Model Y to worry about, which recently underwent a substantial redesign of its own.

The interior will also get many changes for the updated ID.4, including a new dashboard and user interface. VW has recently been reintroducing traditional buttons for certain functions, and this ID.4 will also benefit from similar changes. A traditional round knob for the volume control will make a welcome return, following backlash over the brand's fussy slider controls.
No powertrain details are known at this stage, but the typical improvements to range and efficiency are expected. The current ID.4 produces either 282 horsepower (single motor) or 335 hp (dual motor). The single-motor variant could do with a slight power bump, but the ID.4 has always been a smooth operator and not as overtly sporty as some rivals.
Expected to arrive late in 2026, the heavily updated ID.4 should launch here as a 2027 model.

5 Automakers With the Most Recalls So Far for 2025 & the Last Decade

5 Automakers With the Most Recalls So Far for 2025 & the Last Decade originally appeared on Autoblog. One manufacturer has a record-breaking recall lead this year Auto recalls are a given throughout any year, but they've become more common for some companies than others, and the manufacturer with the most from 2014 to 2024 may surprise you. As of June 30, 2025, Ford Motor Company has had the highest number of recalls this year by a significant margin, at 84, according to Consumer Shield data. Forest River, Inc., North America's leading manufacturer of RVs, cargo trailers, buses, commercial trucks, and vans, and certain watercraft, has racked up the second-most recalls so far in 2025 at 21. Volkswagen Group of America comes in third place with 17 recalls so far this year, followed by General Motors' 15 and Chrysler's 14. American Honda Motor Company similarly had 14 recalls as of June 30. By mid-year, Ford issued 88 safety recalls, breaking the previous full-year record for any manufacturer. In May, Ford recalled 1.1 million vehicles for a software issue that could cause the rearview camera to display a blank or frozen image. This month, the American automaker recalled 850,000 cars due to a problem that could result in a low-pressure fuel pump failure, potentially causing the engine to stall while driving. Weeks later, Ford recalled almost 700,000 vehicles due to a fuel leak issue that posed a fire risk. In 2025, U.S. vehicle recalls doubled during Q2 to 7.3 million, BizzyCar reports. This figure represents the highest quarterly total since early 2024, following Q1, which saw 3.46 million recalls. During Q2, back-over prevention, or features helping prevent accidents when an automobile is reversing, was the most-recalled component, with 2.59 million vehicles impacted. Engine and engine cooling recalls were also common at 1.14 million, along with Service Brakes and Hydraulics at 775,000. The three 'Do Not Drive' recalls during Q2 were all from Ford and affected 2,350 vehicles. The manufacturers facing the most recalls over the last decade One might expect Ford to have had the most recalls from 2015 to 2024, but it actually came in second behind Forest River's 505 with 458. Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz USA, and Daimler Trucks North America filled out the rest of the top five from 2015 to 2024 at 386, 332, and 328, respectively. Forest River's recalls, which have led the RV industry over the past decade, typically stem from manufacturing issues. While Forest River boasts a high manufacturing rate, ranking second in the RV market share behind THOR Industries, RV plants, such as those at Forest River, rely heavily on hand assembly. Workers at these facilities can be paid at a piece rate or by the number of vehicles they produce, rather than an hourly wage. Some argue that piece-rate work incentivizes workers to prioritize speed over quality. Forest River, owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, now sells over 100,000 RVs annually, earning over $6 billion in revenue. Final thoughts Data suggests that Ford's recalls in 2025 primarily relate to complex electronic and fuel system defects, while piece-rate pay for hand assembly seems to be contributing to Forest River's woes. Forest River's recall records indicate manufacturing issues, such as punctured microwaves resulting from improper screw lengths and misaligned furnace flues, which were discovered after an inspector quit, according to Consumer Affairs. While Forest River has the most recalls from 2015 to 2024, Ford's lead so far in 2025 is significant enough to spark concern among brand loyalists. 5 Automakers With the Most Recalls So Far for 2025 & the Last Decade first appeared on Autoblog on Jul 28, 2025 This story was originally reported by Autoblog on Jul 28, 2025, where it first appeared.

Report: Head of EPA visits Indianapolis to announce major environmental policy change

U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is expected to announce a major policy proposal during a visit to Indianapolis on July 28 Zeldin has focused his tenure at the EPA rolling back environmental rules, slashing staff and advancing President Donald Trump's Unleashing America's Energy agenda. Zeldin will announce the repeal of what is known as the "endangerment finding," according to a report in E&E News, a publication of Politico. The EPA's ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions hinges on the endangerment finding — and rolling it back could exacerbate the threats posed by climate change to human health. Governor Mike Braun, Attorney General Todd Rokita and U.S. Rep. Jim Baird, are expected join Zeldin for the announcement at Kenworth of Indianapolis off East 30th Street. Greenhouse gases weren't always classified as air pollutants under the Clean Air Act. Concerns about motor vehicles emissions rising throughout the early 2000s led to a petition where 19 organizations called upon the EPA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA rejected the petition, arguing that the gases weren't considered air pollutants subject to the Clean Air Act. Litigation ensued. And in 2007, the Supreme Court categorized greenhouse gases as 'without a doubt' air pollutants. In 2009, the endangerment finding gave the EPA authority to regulate six greenhouse gases — including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide — as threats to human health. That move contributed to regulations on emissions from cars, trucks, power plants and the oil and gas industry. Repealing the endangerment finding would be a step backward and is not supported by science, said Gabe Filippelli, a biogeochemist and professor of Earth sciences at Indiana University. 'One could argue that it is just another attempt to prop up the dirtiest of businesses we still have in the U.S., which includes coal burning power plants,' Filippelli said. Climate changes poses a real danger for Hoosiers, and revoking these rules is a case of businesses winning and communities losing, he said. The EPA balances economic needs with environmental protection, but the two issues are not at odds. 'We need business and electricity,' Filippelli said, 'but not at the expense of people's health.' KBRA Assigns Preliminary Ratings to Metronet Infrastructure Issuer, LLC, Series 2025-2

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--KBRA assigns preliminary ratings to Series 2025-2 (Metronet 2025-2, or the Series 2025-2 Notes) from Metronet Infrastructure Issuer, LLC (the Issuer), a communications infrastructure securitization (CIS) that is primarily collateralized by fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks and related contracts. Metronet 2025-2 represents Metronet System Holdings, LLC's (MetroNet's or the Company's) second KBRA-rated securitization following the establishment of the master trust in July 2025. In conjunction with the issuance of the Series 2025-2 Notes, KBRA anticipates affirming the ratings on the Issuer's outstanding notes. The ratings are consistent with the results of our cash flow analysis following the addition of the Series 2025-2 Notes. The ratings on the outstanding Series 2025-1 Notes are being published at the request of the issuer. The ratings on Series 2025-1 were assigned on July 24, 2025, on an unpublished basis. KBRA re-analyzed the Series 2025-1 Notes in conjunction with the issuance of the Series 2025-2 Notes and anticipates affirming the ratings on the outstanding series upon the closing of Series 2025-2. The business of the Issuer is to own, manage, and operate fiber optic communication systems infrastructure for the delivery of communication services to customers including, but not limited to, data services, IP-delivered voice services, and other services and equipment. Underlying customers include individual residential consumers whose associated monthly recurring charges are remitted directly to T-Mobile, USA (T-Mobile) and then remitted by T-Mobile to the trust. The portion of expected revenues to be remitted directly by T-Mobile to the trust are estimated to represent over two thirds of pro-forma revenue, and commercial customers including commercial enterprises, multi-tenant properties, schools, hospitals, libraries, and other governmental institutions are expected to constitute the remaining pro-forma revenue. The assets consist of FTTP infrastructure, customer agreements, related easements, licenses and permits, rights of use, a master framework agreement and other access agreements. The annualized revenue supporting the transaction is estimated to be approximately $372.2 million, which nets to an Annualized Run Rate Revenue of approximately $257.8 million after various senior expenses. Concurrent with the closing of the transaction, a fiber to the premises master framework agreement has been entered into between T-Mobile and the Issuer and other transaction entities. These MFA Suppliers are subsidiaries of MetroNet Systems Holdings, LLC. In this T-Mobile MFA, T-Mobile is obligated to remit to the MFA Supplier Group monthly recurring charges for services delivered to the underlying customers (who in turn pay T-Mobile directly) under the agreement.
