From Coffee to Collective Impact: The Origin of the Women in Finance Forum
On Wednesday, May 28, more than 200 women+ from around Portland working in the financial services industry came together for an evening of inspiration and connection at the second annual Women in Finance Forum. The event was hosted by the local chapters of five professional women's organizations: ● CFA Society ● Portland Women in Investment Management ● Women in ETFs ● Women in Insurance & Financial Services ● WE Inspire. Promote. Network. A Moment of Inspiration In a city rich with professional women's organizations, a simple coffee meeting in early 2023 sparked a question that would launch something much greater: "What would happen if we teamed up?" That's the question Yolanda Reyes White and Lisa Massena asked one another over coffee in the sunshine, as they chatted about work, family, and their involvement with two standout groups in Portland's financial landscape — We Inspire. Promote. Network. (WIPN) and CFA Society Portland (CFASP). 'It started with a Happy New Year email,' Lisa recalled. 'That led to a spontaneous catch-up between two people who care deeply about the role women play in shaping the financial industry.' Their conversation quickly led to a shared realization: there are so many powerful organizations that support women in finance, but few opportunities for members of the individual networks to connect. With the support of their respective boards, the idea took off. By the fall of 2023, the concept of a collaborative event had taken shape. More leaders were invited to the table, ideas began to flow, and the Women in Finance Forum was born. A Shared Vision What emerged wasn't just an event — it became a platform rooted in three core goals: ● Cultivate Community and Foster Meaningful Connections Introduce women in the Portland financial sector to the participating organizations to expand professional networks, spark collaborative opportunities, and create a supportive environment. ● Change the Metrics Encourage and support more women to take on roles of responsibility within the financial services industry, shifting the landscape for the next generation. ● Collaborate to Provide Greater Value Combine resources, ideas, and energy to offer more than any one organization could alone. 'This collaboration is about more than networking,' Yolanda shared. 'It's about showing what's possible when women unite around a shared mission. We're acknowledging, celebrating, and amplifying the leadership already happening — and making room for more.' In just one year, the event has grown to include five partner organizations, dozens of volunteers, and a sold-out audience at its 2024 and 2025 forums. The heart of it, however, still comes back to the question asked over coffee — and the collective action that followed. A Collective Thanks The 2025 Women in Finance Forum would not have been possible without the generosity and commitment of its sponsors, the strength of the five collaborating organizations, and the dedication of the volunteers who brought this vision to life. To all attendees — thank you for showing up with curiosity, energy, and purpose. Your presence is what transforms ideas into momentum. This forum is a reflection of what happens when we lead together, build intentionally, and share the stage.

Star Refrigeration's Astrid Prado appointed Co-Chair of Women in RACHP
The company celebrates the appointment of its team member by the IOR, which aligns with Star's longstanding commitment to supporting diversity and collaboration across the RACHP engineering sector. GLASGOW, Scotland, Nov. 26, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Star Refrigeration is proud to announce the appointment of Astrid Prado, the company's Head of Marketing, as Co-Chair of the Women in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, and Heat Pumps (RACHP) group. The Women in RACHP Network was established by the Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) in 2016. It is dedicated to supporting and promoting career development for women across the industry. It offers opportunities for networking, mentoring and learning while raising awareness of the career paths available in the industry. The group is open to all professional women working within the engineering sector and extends its support beyond engineers to include those in roles such as legal, administration, HR, marketing, and accounting. Recognising the diverse expertise and critical contributions essential for the success of engineering projects and businesses, the group aims to drive progress and foster equity across the sector. A Chartered Marketer and IOR member, Astrid Prado has been with Star Refrigeration since 2005. She has played a pivotal role in championing initiatives that align with the company's ethos of sustainability, career development and diversity. In her 20-year tenure at the firm, she has successfully led marketing strategies for both Star Refrigeration and its online educational platform, Star Learning Solutions. Her dedication to promoting diversity within engineering industries aligns with Star Refrigeration's longstanding commitment to drive positive change in the sector through education. Throughout her career, Astrid has contributed to the development of future business leaders by delivering guest lectures on marketing to MBA students at the University of Glasgow. In 2019, she was nominated by the Women in RACHP group for the Diversity Impact Award at the RAC Cooling Industry Awards for her work, on behalf of the Institute of Refrigeration, in driving the group's groundbreaking gender parity survey. The research provides valuable insights into the industry's attitudes and benefits for women, identifying steps to close the gender gap and attract more female talent. During her career in Star, Astrid has supported initiatives that empower women, including the STEMAZING programme, which provides resources to help women build confidence to deliver STEM sessions to primary school children. She has also led STEM awareness events with local schools as part of Star Refrigeration's 'Little Stars' programme, which encourages children to explore the exciting opportunities a career in engineering can offer. Story Continues Astrid has additionally played an active role in supporting Star Refrigeration's commitment to developing an inclusive workplace. The company continues to lead by example by offering part-time and flexible working arrangements, alongside enhanced maternity, paternity, and shared parental leave policies. These initiatives create an inclusive environment that supports women in the workplace and fosters shared caregiving responsibilities. Commenting on her new role, Astrid Prado said, "I am honoured to take on this position alongside Sam Buckell, a valued colleague and dedicated professional in our industry. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with talented individuals to expand the impact of the Women in RACHP group. I firmly believe that individual efforts alone are not enough; true progress happens when women unite to amplify their voices and visibility. By sharing experiences, challenges and successes, we can create a more inclusive industry where diversity becomes the norm, not the exception." "This group is about more than networking. It's a movement to empower women, foster mentorship and inspire the next generation. Together, we can ensure the refrigeration and heating sector is a place where everyone can contribute and thrive." The dual Co-Chair structure marks an evolution in the group's governance and represents a move towards a more inclusive leadership model to better address the varied challenges faced by women in the industry. Star Refrigeration's active involvement in initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion is part of a longstanding tradition of stewardship in industry organisations. Over the years, Star personnel have held prominent roles, including the Presidency of the Institute of Refrigeration, Chairmanship of the British Standards Institute Committee on Refrigeration Safety, and participation in Eurammon's Steering Committee and the British Refrigeration Association Council. Astrid Prado's appointment builds on Star Refrigeration's efforts to inspire positive change, advance diversity, and showcase the potential of the RACHP sector to offer rewarding and innovative careers for all.
