Tsunami threat looms over Russia and Hawaii after series of earthquakes

Metro7 days ago
A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Russia after a series of earthquakes.
Two powerful tremors – the larger with a magnitude of 7.4 – struck the sea near the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The larger quake was at a depth of 12 miles and was 89 miles east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which has a population of 180,000.
A few minutes earlier, a second one with a magnitude of 6.7 was recorded nearby.
As a result, Hawaii has been put on a tsunami watch – a lesser threat than the warning issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry says tsunami of up to 60 centimeters is possible.

Ten killed after being surrounded by raging wildfire in Turkey

At least 10 firefighters and rescue workers have died as wildfires rage across north west Turkey. Five forestry workers and five rescue workers died while trying to put out the wildfire raging through a forested area of Eskisehir earlier today. Forestry minister Ibrahim Yumakli said at least 14 more rescue workers have been hospitalised. These latest deaths bring the number of people killed in wildfires across Turkey since June 26 to 13. Mr Yumakli said all 24 people, including some from AKUT Search and Rescue Association, became surrounded by flames after the wind suddenly changed direction. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid his condolences to the families of those killed, saying they had fought 'to protect our forests at cost of their lives'. It's not yet known what caused this specific fire, but firefighters are currently dealing with seven fires in Turkey, including the one in Eskisehir. Prosecutors have now been assigned to investigate the deaths, Turkey's justice minister said. It's feared the situation could get worse on Thursday, with extreme heat and volatile wind conditions forecast for tomorrow. More Trending Mr Yumakli called on Turkey's residents to 'be vigilant and exercise extra caution'. An elderly man and two forestry workers were killed in a wildfire that raged near the town of Odemis, in Izmir province, earlier this month. AKUT is a non-governmental organisation for disaster search and rescue relief. Got a story? Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@ Or you can submit your videos and pictures here. Black aspin Moana somehow escaped after the huge rock crushed her cage outside the house in Benguet province in the Philippines. The sandstone boulder was captured rolling down the street before it flattened several objects on the driveway, including a parked car. Her owner Conniey said: 'We heard a loud rumbling from inside the house. It all happened so fast. I thought it was the end for us.' She added: 'We were so relieved to find her safe. We really thought we had lost her. She is so smart, her instincts saved her.' After emerging from the wreckage of the crash, Moana ran across the road to safety. The front of the home sustained partial damage, while no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. It came as Typhoon Wipha swept across the northern Philippines, displacing tens of thousands and damaging more than 1,200 homes. Its 167kph winds and heavy downpours have affected up to 800,000 people and left at least three dead. Power outages occurred across 76 cities, mainly in the Calabarzon region. The storm has since progressed across the South China Sea, towards southern China, Vietnam and Thailand. More Trending It also battered Hong Kong, where more than 500 flights were either cancelled or delayed at the city's Chek Lap Kok Airport. In Vietnam, the typhoon claimed the lives of at least 30 people on board the tourist sightseeing Wonder Sea boat which capsized on Saturday afternoon at Ha Long Bay, 125 miles northeast of the capital, Hanoi. Several of the 50 passengers who were on ship, including 20 children, remain missing. One of the survivors was a 14-year-old boy who was rescued after being trapped for four hours in the boat's hull.
