Scottish sports star dies after hotel balcony fall in Ibiza
Gary Kelly, from Dundee, fell to his death at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio in the early hours of Monday morning.
The 19-year-old ice hockey star played for both [[Dundee]] Stars and Aberdeen Lynx last season.
A statement from Dundee Stars read: "The Dundee Stars are truly devastated to learn that Gary Kelly has tragically passed away.
"We send our thoughts and condolences to Gary's family, partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.
"Everyone at the club including players, staff, management, and ownership are heartbroken to hear this tragic news.
"Gary was hugely talented and charismatic individual who had a great future ahead of him. His loss will impact many in the ice hockey community and beyond. He will be sadly missed.
"We respect and support the family's request for privacy at this extremely difficult time."

Aberdeen Lynx also paid tribute, writing: "The Lynx family is heartbroken to share the devastating news of the sudden passing of one of our brightest young stars, Gary Kelly, while on holiday.
"Gary was more than just a talented hockey player — he was a young man full of heart, passion, and dedication. On the ice, he gave everything he had. Off the ice, he brought energy, kindness, and an infectious love of life that lifted everyone around him. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and that spirit left a lasting mark on our team, our club, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
"Gary's potential was limitless, but even more than that, he was simply a brilliant person to be around. He was part of our family, and his absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled.
"We send our deepest condolences to Gary's family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time. Our thoughts are with you, and we stand with you in grief and in love.
"As a club, we are doing all we can to support our players and members as they come to terms with this tragic loss.

Scottish Ice Hockey, the governing body for ice hockey in Scotland, added: "It is with deep sadness that Scottish Ice Hockey has learned of the sudden passing of Gary Kelly, a young athlete who represented both his clubs and his country with distinction.
"Gary was a dedicated and talented player who proudly wore the Scotland jersey. He brought commitment, energy, and integrity to the sport both on and off the ice. His passion for hockey and the positive impact he had on teammates, coaches, and those around him will not be forgotten.
"At just 19 years old, Gary had already demonstrated remarkable potential and was widely respected throughout the Scottish ice hockey community. His love for the game and the contribution he made to the clubs he played for have left a lasting legacy.
"On behalf of everyone at Scottish Ice Hockey, we extend our deepest condolences to Gary's family, friends, and teammates at this incredibly difficult time.

The death of the teenager comes weeks after another Scottish holidaymaker died at the same hotel in similar circumstances.
Evan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, died after falling from a sixth-floor balcony at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel on July 7.
On Monday afternoon, Ibiza Rocks issued a statement and confirmed that it had paused events following the deaths.
The statement read: "We are deeply shocked and devastated by the recent incidents that have tragically occurred.
'Our priority is to support those affected and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time, and to fully assist the authorities with their investigations.
'The safety and wellbeing of our guests has, and always will remain, our highest priority.
"Given the seriousness of the situation and out of respect for those involved, we believe it is right to pause our advertised events programme at this time."

Scottish airport fined £144,000 for failures that led to death of employee
The company that runs Glasgow Prestwick Airport has been fined more than £144,000 for failures that led to a member of airport staff falling to his death when a guardrail gave way. Joseph Dempsey, an experienced member of the airport's ground handling team, died in the incident on January 11 2023. The 59-year-old had been preparing to unload cargo from an aircraft using a pallet loader. He had positioned the loader alongside the aircraft and was repositioning a guardrail when it suddenly gave way and he fell to the tarmac some 10 feet (three metres) below. Mr Dempsey's colleagues immediately went to his assistance and paramedics attempted CPR and advanced life support. However, these efforts proved unsuccessful and Mr Dempsey was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that one of the guardrail posts had completely fractured, and that there were visible signs of significant corrosion, discolouration and flaking white paint around the area. At Ayr Sheriff Court on June 25, Glasgow Prestwick Airport Ltd pled guilty to a breach of health and safety legislation, having failed to ensure the pallet loader was maintained and in good repair. At the same court on Thursday, the company was fined £144,050, including a victim surcharge of £10,050. Debbie Carroll leads on health and safety investigations for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS). Speaking after the sentencing, she said: 'Joseph Dempsey lost his life in circumstances which could have been avoided if Prestwick Airport had in place a suitable and adequate maintenance and inspection programme to ensure the equipment he was using was in a good state of repair. 'This prosecution should remind duty holders that a failure to fulfil their obligations can have fatal consequences and they will be held accountable for this failure.' Metallurgical examination of the guardrail posts carried out during the investigation found differences in chemical composition, manufacturing, and wall thickness which indicated the posts were manufactured from two different tubing sections. The HSE found these welded sections were not a feature of the manufacture's original design, and appeared to have been modified while the loader was under the ownership of Prestwick Airport. The investigation also found the welds on both the guardrail posts contained defects which would allow moisture in, creating a corrosive environment and speeding up deterioration. It was also found that the maintenance programme in place at the time did not cover the parts of the guardrail where failure or deterioration could lead to health and safety risks. Graeme McMinn, HM principal inspector of health and safety, said: 'Employers have an absolute legal duty to ensure that equipment they use at work is maintained in an efficient state and in good repair and full working order. 'This incident is a tragic reminder of what can result when that does not happen.' Since the incident, Prestwick Airport has undertaken a review of all work at height, and checks of the guardrails on the platform loaders have been made part of the regular service and inspection schedule.

Bodies of 3 men recovered from Mississippi River after swimming, fishing on sandbar
The bodies of three men were recovered from the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tennessee, on Wednesday after they went missing while fishing and swimming on a sandbar. The victims, who ranged in age from their 20s to their 50s, were reported missing Tuesday evening near a boat ramp at Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park, about 13 miles north of Memphis, authorities said. Search and rescue teams with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office and other Memphis-area agencies began looking for the men Tuesday evening and eventually had to call off the search because of darkness, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office said. 6 SWEPT OVER OREGON WATERFALL; 2 DEAD AND 1 MISSING The search, which included aircraft, rescue boats, drones and the use of sonar, resumed Wednesday morning. The first two bodies were recovered at about 11 a.m. and the third at around 12:45 p.m., the sheriff's office said. A cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. The victims, who authorities said were all Hispanic, were identified as Marlon Mendez, 28, Rudy Perez, 31, and Jose Yanes, 52. Authorities said the men had been fishing and swimming on a sandbar – a natural ridge of sand formed when fast-moving water slows and deposits sediment. In rivers like the Mississippi, sandbars can be unstable and collapse under weight or shifting currents. You can be drawn into the channel and find yourself staring at a 24-unit barge that's the size of a skyscraper on its side coming straight at you with no way for the barge crew to have any idea that you are there," the fire department said on Facebook. Doug Ammons, the owner of a general store a few miles from the river, told the outlet that the river is "lethally dangerous." "This is a horrific tragedy right here, and it happens way too often," Ammons said. "But I understand how it happens.
