‘Tamil Nadu Day': Stalin, Udhayanidhi hail the State CM Stalin and deputy Udhayanidhi sing praises for the State
It was on this day, July 18, 1967, the State got its real name 'Tamil Nadu', which was a long dream, the Chief Minister said. Hailing former CM C.N. Annadurai, Mr. Stalin recalled that the late leader uttered the name thrice in the Assembly amidst the thumping of desks.
In a social media post, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin recalled how emotionally charged the moment was within the Assembly on the day when the State got the name.
He also called for defeating the 'fascist forces' and those assisting them by giving up the rights of the State. He called for efforts to defeat 'rivals and traitors' who he claimed were against the interests of the State.
The Tamil Development Department organised various competitions for school students to mark the 'Tamil Nadu Day' celebrations. During an event here on Friday, the Minister for Information and Publicity M.P. Saminathan distributed financial assistance to aged Tamil scholars who have contributed to the development and promotion of the Tamil language. He also distributed prizes to the winners. Pollachi MP K. Eswarasamy and senior officials were present.

Congress leaders who joined BJP ahead of Delhi elections get key posts
BJP MLAs Arvinder Singh Lovely and Raj Kumar Chauhan, who had switched to the party from Congress ahead of the Assembly elections in the Capital, have been appointed to key positions in the Delhi government. Lovely, the Gandhi Nagar MLA, has been named Chairman of the Trans-Yamuna Development Board, while Mangolpuri legislator Chauhan has been appointed the Chairman of the Village Development Board. The posts are equivalent to the rank of a Cabinet minister, underlined a government document. 'The Council of Ministers decided to designate the positions of Chairperson of Delhi Village Development Board (DVDB) and Chairperson of Trans Yamuna Area Development Board in the rank of Cabinet Minister in GNCT of Delhi,' stated a government document on Saturday. It added that other members of DVDB will be nominated by the government. 'The function of the Board will be to advise the government on issues connected with the infrastructural development works in rural and urban villages of Delhi,' it further said. Both Lovely and Chauhan had previously served as ministers in the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress government. The latest appointments are seen as a reward for their role in strengthening the BJP's campaign in the Assembly election. 'This was a much-awaited reward. Both leaders bring administrative experience and will play key roles in developmental initiatives and in the party's civic poll strategy,' said a senior BJP functionary. Officials said the nominations received approval from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta a few days ago. Lovely, who also served as the pro-tem Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, quit the Congress last May, citing disagreement with the party's decision to ally with AAP for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He had then joined the BJP for the second time and said: 'The last time I left Congress, it was in anger. This time, I did so with a cool head and after deep thought. Now, it's BJP or nothing—either we do politics here, or we don't do it at all.' Chauhan resigned from the Congress after being denied a ticket in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Contesting on a BJP ticket from the Mangolpuri (SC) seat earlier this year, Chauhan emerged victorious. Chauhan on Saturday said, 'The party has given us recognition equivalent to Cabinet rank and given the opportunity to work for the welfare of the people. ‘Amma Arogya Thittam' renamed ‘Nalam Kaakkum Stalin': EPS
1 2 Tuticorin: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday accused the DMK govt of renaming Amma Arogya Thittam, launched in 2016 by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa, as Nalam Kaakkum Stalin scheme. He was speaking at different places in Tuticorin district as part of his Makkalai Kappom Tamilagathai Meetpom campaign. At Tiruchendur, he charged the DMK govt with rebranding all AIADMK-era welfare schemes and claiming them as new achievements. "Under the AIADMK govt, weekly medical camps were held at upgraded primary health centres, offering 16 types of diagnostic tests. The DMK has changed the name and stuck a label on the same scheme. This is not innovation, but advertisement," he said. "That project is now being showcased as a DMK achievement," he said. He said that under the AIADMK govt, monthly review meetings led by the CM were held to fast-track approvals. "This govt has abandoned that system, and industry is suffering," he said. Palaniswami also hit out at the DMK for mismanagement during Tuticorin floods in 2023. EPS began the day by offering prayers at Our Lady of Snows Basilica in Tuticorin. Chennai: After the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that 36 lakh voters from Bihar were missing from the electoral rolls, Tamil Nadu politicians expressed concern that they might be included in the state's voter list. DMK general secretary Duraimurugan, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan, NTK chief coordinator Seeman, and Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) founder T Velmurugan opposed "the addition of guest workers from Bihar to the Tamil Nadu voter list".
