A.P. govt. sets target to increase green cover to 50% by 2047

The Hindu05-06-2025
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has announced an ambitious plan to increase the green cover in the State to 37% by 2029 and 50% by 2047, saying that 'those who do not plant trees have no right to expect clean air.'
Participating in World Environment Day celebrations at ADC Park in Ananthavaram village of Thullur mandal in Guntur district on Thursday, Mr. Naidu emphasised the collective responsibility of all citizens in safeguarding the environment.
Komera Ankarao appointed adviser
Mr. Naidu appointed Komera Ankarao, popularly known as 'Andhra Forest Man', who has been working to protect Nallamala forests, as Adviser to the Forest and Environment Department. 'His (Mr. Ankarao) grassroots conservation efforts and awareness campaigns are inspirational, and his role will be pivotal in guiding the State's green mission,' Mr. Naidu said.
The Chief Minister, joined by Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan, launched a massive one-crore tree plantation drive and pledged to raise 5.58 crore saplings by the Environment Day next year.
Highlighting the urgency of combating global warming, Mr. Naidu noted, 'Rainfall has declined, groundwater is depleting, agriculture is at risk, and fluoride-related health issues are rising. Trees are our only rescue.'
Seed Rakhi
Mr. Pawan Kalyan, who holds the Environment portfolio, emphasised the importance of citizens' participation and awareness among the youth. 'We are starting innovative campaigns such as 'Seed Rakhi' to involve young girls in environmental protection,' he said. He also assured the creation of urban forests in all 175 Assembly constituencies and efforts to eliminate single-use plastic across the State by June 2026.
Currently, Andhra Pradesh has a green cover of 30.05%, with forest areas spanning 23% of the State's landmass. Mr. Naidu noted that past regimes had planted trees only for 'photo opportunities', while the current administration is committed to bringing in a measurable impact.
Green capital
The Chief Minister also revealed plans to transform Amaravati into a green, futuristic capital, introducing Miyawaki gardens, renewable energy projects, and free 2-kilowatt solar panels for SC and ST households. Waste-to-energy plants in Guntur and Visakhapatnam, and 157 Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR) centres across 87 municipalities are already operational.
Mr. Naidu concluded by announcing that International Yoga Day, on June 21, would be held under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Visakhapatnam, aiming to set a Guinness World Record with participation from more than 2 crore people across the State.

Gujarat govt brings ordinance to extend factory working hours, allow women on night shifts

The Gujarat government has promulgated an ordinance amending key provisions of the Factories Act, 1948, allowing an increase in the daily working hours of factory workers from nine to twelve, while capping the weekly working limit at 48 hours. The ordinance also permits employment of women in night shifts under a set of conditions. The Factories (Gujarat Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, issued on July 1 by the Labour, Skill Development and Employment department, comes into effect while the state Assembly is not in session. It seeks to provide 'relaxation to the factories to boost economic activities, attract investment in national importance to new projects and generate employment.' The ordinance amends Section 54 of the Act to allow the state government to notify an increase in daily working hours up to 12 hours, including rest intervals, subject to a maximum of 48 hours in any week. It clarifies that increased hours is contingent on the written consent of the worker. The revised Section 54 also allows the state to extend, through notification, the number of continuous working hours without interval from five to six. Workers will receive overtime wages at twice the ordinary rate. Additionally, the ordinance raises the quarterly cap on overtime hours from the existing 75 to 125, again subject to the worker's written consent. Another key amendment permits employment of women in night shifts—from 7 pm to 6 am—subject to 16 specified conditions. These include mandatory preventive measures against sexual harassment, provision of proper lighting and CCTV coverage in and around the workplace, minimum batch size of 10 women workers per shift, deployment of female security personnel, and provision of safe transportation. The ordinance clarifies that no woman worker shall be compelled to work night shifts and that written consent will be required from those willing to opt for such night shifts

Andhra Pradesh CM Nara Chandrababu Naidu slams YSRCP: Alleges threat to singaiah's wife to corner ruling party; announces Rs 250 crore for mango farmers

TIRUPATI: Chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu accused the YSRCP of threatening their party worker Singaiah's wife in a bid to corner the ruling party. 'YSRCP has the dubious distinction of being renowned for its murder politics. It was very clear that when their own party worker Singaiah got crushed under the wheels of the vehicle of their party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy, instead of taking him immediately to the hospital, they dumped his body on the roadside and left him to die', Naidu lamented. Shifting his focus to the mango crisis in the state, particularly in Chittoor district, CM stated that he was scheduled to hold a meeting with all stakeholders concerned and assured that the state govt will resolve the issue and come to the rescue of the farmers. 'We have set aside Rs.250 cr towards extending subsidies for the mango farmers. We have also sought the centre's support on the issue', CM asserted. 'Unlike the previous govt, the NDA govt is committed for the upliftment of the farming community as is evident from our allocations to irrigation in the very first year of the NDA rule in the state. The govt has allocated Rs.3950 cr at one go for Handri-Neeva project alone to ensure every single acre of farmland in the Rayalaseema region of the state gets assured water supply', Naidu asserted. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo Meanwhile, CM reiterated that the Banakacharla project in Andhra Pradesh will not harm anyone's interests. 'About 2000 TMC ft waters from the Godavari river are going waste into the Ocean for more than a century now. All that Andhra Pradesh is trying to do is to divert and store about 200 TMC ft waters to benefit the farmers of the state', Naidu asserted and added that he never raised any objections to irrigation projects constructed by Telangana or any other state in the past.

Anbumani has no power to remove R. Arul from PMK's primary membership, says Ramadoss

Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss on Thursday (July 3, 2025) said the party's 'working president' Anbumani Ramadoss does not have the power to remove Salem West MLA R. Arul from its primary membership. The founder alone is vested with the powers to remove him, he said. Speaking to reporters at his Thailapuram residence near Tindivanam, Dr. Ramadoss said Mr. Arul is the party's whip in the Assembly, and at most, honorary president and Legislature Party leader G.K. Mani could only recommend his removal to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The 'working president' has no power to remove the party whip, he said. On Wednesday (July 2), Dr. Anbumani announced the expulsion of Mr. Arul from the primary membership of the party, accusing him of acting in a manner that went against the party's disciplinary rules and bringing disrepute to the party by making statements to the media. Decision on alliance Replying to a question, Dr. Ramadoss said a decision on the PMK's alliance for the 2026 Assembly elections would be made only after consulting party workers at the executive council and general council meetings. Until then, speculations about an alliance are merely rumours, he said. Welcoming the Tamil Nadu School Education Department's new initiative 'Level Up' to improve students' proficiency in English, Dr. Ramadoss said the project should be expanded to cover students of classes I to V as well. With farmers expecting an enhanced target of 5 lakh acres in the delta districts for the ongoing Kuruvai cultivation, the State government should ensure adequate stock of fertilisers, he said. Dr. Ramadoss also urged the government to provide a compensation of ₹1 crore to the next of kin of the Sivaganga custodial death victim, B. Ajith Kumar.
