Volkswagen issues urgent safety recall for Polo and Taigo vehicles
As safety takes precedence, Volkswagen consumers are urged to act swiftly, ensuring that their vehicles are examined and outfitted with the necessary corrections. In an age where vehicular safety is paramount, addressing these safety alerts promptly can save lives and prevent injuries. Stay informed and vigilant; your next drive may depend on it. Read on to learn more about the recall process and how to safeguard your journey.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed the recall of 142 Volkswagen Polo vehicles and 8 Taigo vehicles due to a critical safety defect involving the gas generators in the front passenger airbag module. This significant recall, proactively announced by Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA), affects a portion of vehicles sold in the country between late 2022 and early 2024.
The defect poses potentially life-threatening risks. In the event of an accident, the airbags may fail to deploy properly, resulting in reduced protection for passengers, an alarming situation that raises the stakes for vehicle safety. Further compounded by the gas generator housing's risk of bursting or releasing loose components, the implications for occupants could be serious or even fatal.
According to VWSA, the problematic vehicles include 141 Polo models that were made available for sale nationally from 20 December 2022, alongside one Polo and the eight Taigo models that reached consumers starting 29 January 2024. The sheer number of vehicles involved underscores the urgency of addressing this safety issue promptly.
Steps for affected consumers
The NCC strongly advises affected owners to take immediate action to protect themselves and their passengers. Here are the recommended steps:
Deactivate the front passenger airbag.
Refrain from using the front passenger seat until further notice.
Submit the vehicle to any VWSA-approved dealer for inspection and necessary replacement of affected components.
This recall is a stark reminder of the automotive industry's commitment to safety and the crucial role regulative bodies play in protecting consumers. Volkswagen has initiated this recall process to avert the potential consequences of faulty airbag deployments, reflecting a proactive stance towards ensuring the safety of their drivers and passengers.

RMI launches Project Dineo to train young South Africans for a career in the motor industry
Project Dineo aims to attract more youths to the automotive industry. Image: Supplied Youth unemployment remains a crisis of epic proportions in South Africa. The most recent figures, from the first quarter of 2025, showed that joblessness among those under 34 surged to 46.1%, from 44.6% in the previous quarter. And yet skills shortages prevail, particularly among the trades. For instance, South Africa currently trains just 13,000 artisans per year, well below the national target of 30,000, according to BluLever Education. A new initiative called Project Dineo aims to attract more youths to the automotive industry by providing a practical pathway to 100 learners per year for the next three years. The project is a partnership between the Retail Motor Industry (RMI), merSETA and the Presidency, and it will focus on empowering women, people with disabilities and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. Launched at the MIWA Motor Mech Show at the Port Rex Technical High School in East London over the weekend, the programme will provide high-quality training through top public TVET colleges and accredited learning providers. This will be complemented by hands-on apprentices at RMI-approved employers. 'The combination of formal education and real-world exposure sets learners on a direct route to full employment in high-demand trades such as motor and diesel mechanics, panel beating, spray painting, and more,' says RMI National Training Director Louis van Huyssteen. He added that modern apprenticeships offer much more than practical training, they provide a pathway to a respected and sustainable career. Video Player is loading. It is a future-facing profession and a real career of choice,' van Huyssteen added. Sabelo Buthelezi, special project director at the Department of Higher Education said participation by private sector employers was essential for providing today's youth with the necessary skills. 'Without workplace experience, an apprenticeship remains incomplete. Without employer mentors, apprentices lack the real-world feedback that makes learning come alive. We are not asking you to carry this burden alone. Government, through SETA grants and support systems, stands with you,' Buthelezi said. IOL

Volkswagen unveils most powerful Golf GTI yet in 50th anniversary tribute
Volkswagen is marking 50 years of the Golf GTI with a special edition that also happens to be the most powerful production GTI yet. The new Golf GTI Edition 50 was revealed during the Nürburgring 24 Hours and is set to go into production at the end of 2025, with deliveries expected in early 2026. Looking for a new or used Volkswagen? Find it here with CARmag! Power comes from a 2l turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 239kW and 420N.m. That's a 44kW jump over the standard GTI, and it edges past the Golf GTI Clubsport, which makes 221kW. Power is sent through a seven-speed DSG transmission. Chassis changes include a 15mm drop compared with the standard GTI, with further tweaks available through an optional Performance Package. That setup lowers the car by an additional 5mm, stiffens the springs, and adds revised suspension mounts. Volkswagen says the adjustments improve turn-in and stability under load. Sebastian Willmann, head of chassis development at VW, says the Edition 50 builds on lessons from the Golf VII GTI Clubsport. 'We managed to further increase front axle grip while maintaining neutral, agile handling,' he says. A lightweight Akrapovič titanium exhaust saves another 11kg over the standard system. Volkswagen development driver Benjamin Leuchter drove the Edition 50 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:46.13, the fastest recorded lap for a production Golf. 'It's the most precise and sporty Volkswagen I've ever driven,' he says. Visual cues include GTI 50 badging on the mirrors and spoiler, a black roof, and a gradient side stripe in Tornado Red, a colour with GTI heritage. Inside, the cabin gets the usual GTI plaid seats with red belts, a GTI 50-branded steering wheel, and green contrast stitching. Volkswagen celebrates Golf GTI's 50th early with special Edition 50
Besides the regular GTI, the 50 Edition also becomes the most powerful Golf GTI ever made with power than the GTI Clubsport and the same torque figure as the Golf R. Edition 50 has officially become the fastest and most powerful Golf GTI ever made. Image: Volkswagen Ahead of its 50th anniversary celebration next year, Volkswagen officially debuted the commemorative Edition 50 of the Golf GTI this past weekend on the eve of the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. The most powerful GTI ever made, and the fastest to have lapped the 'Ring with a time of seven minutes 46.13 seconds, the GTI Edition 50 retains usage of the same 2.0 TSI engine as the standard GTI and Golf R, but with the same drive unit as the Golf 8.5 GTI Clubsport. Mechanically otherwise unchanged, the result is a power output of 239 kW, 44 kW more than the normal Golf 8.5 GTI and six kilowatts down on the R, and torque rating of 420 Nm. The latter representing an increase of 50 Nm over the standard GTI and matching that of the R, the GTI Edition 50 will get from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and hit a limited top speed of 270 km/h. More powerful than the Clubsport, whose 221kW/400Nm had been the most of any GTI until now, the Edition 50 continues to send its amount to the front axle only via a seven-speed DSG. Unsurprisingly, a series of extensive revisions have taken place underneath. These include a 15 mm ride height drop, retuned steering, reprogramming of the Dynamic Chassis Control system and a revised XDS electronic front differential. As an option though, the GTI Performance package goes a step further by adding an additional five millimetre ride height drop for a total of 20 mm compared to the standard GTI, 19-inch Warmenau forged alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza semi-slick tyres that weight eight kilograms less each than the normal wheels, and an Akrapovič titanium exhaust system that reduces weight by a further 11 kg. Externally, the easy-to-spot changes consist of gloss black finishes on the door sills, gloss black mirror caps, GTI 50 logo on the outer blades of the roof spoiler, black exhaust outlet tips, Tornado Red detailing on the wheels and a black stripe at the base of the doors that fades to red. Inside, the unique touches comprise red seatbelts, a GTI 50 logo on the base of the steering wheel, check pattern red, white and green imitation Velour-trimmed seats, GTI stitch work on the front seatbacks, a gloss black centre console, GTI 50 treadplates and red alloy pedals. In total, the GTI Edition 50 will be offered in five colours; Pure White, Grenadilla Black, Moonstone Grey and two exclusive hues not offered on the standard GTI, Tornado Red and Moss Green. Now available for ordering with deliveries starting from the first quarter of 2026, the Golf 8.5 GTI Edition 50 is unlikely to be offered in South Africa anytime soon as a result of the country's poor quality currently prohibiting the launch of the normal GTI and R until at least 2027.
