Six longhouses in rural Katibas now get 24-hour power supply, thanks to RES
KAPIT (July 29): The villagers of six longhouses at Sungai Tekalit in Katibas now enjoy 24-hour electricity supply, thanks to the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES).
Under Phase III of the scheme, the people of Rumah Johnny, Rumah Dunggo, Rumah Lumpong, Rumah Bahrain, Rumah Ensam and Rumah Ebin are now benefitting from reliable power that has improved their daily lives.
The RES sets out to extend the existing supply from Sarawak Power Grid to the 'un-electrified' areas, giving access to electricity for rural households and other facilities such as rural schools and rural clinics.
'This facility (RES) has brought significant changes to the daily lives of these longhouse residents in Tekalit.
'Now, they don't have to worry about cooking food like meat, fish and vegetables immediately, as these can be kept fresh in the fridge over a longer period of time.
'More importantly, however, the stable electricity supply really benefit the fields of education, health and local economy.
'Students can now access online learning, and our healthcare workers can utilise medical equipment to the fullest.
'This is an important step in rural development,' said Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan in announcing the readiness of RES Phase III at Rumah Johny last weekend.
On another matter, he called upon the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Rumah Johnny to engage with the local Fire and Rescue (Bomba) statin in programmes meant to raise public awareness of longhouse fire safety.
'Seek advice on setting up your own Volunteer Firefighting Squad,' he added.
Later, the assemblyman announced a government grant for JKKK Rumah Johnny to plan and hold activities meant for the benefit of the longhouse folks.
Among those present at the session were the Ambrose Abong Bugek, the political secretary to federal Works Minister; Watson Awan Jalai, a political secretary to the Sarawak Premier; Song District officer Harry Bruce Edwin; local community leaders Temenggong Jamit Untam, Temenggong Toh Tze Hua, Pemanca Lim Eng Hock and Penghulu John Kho Chong Bee; as well as Sarawak Energy Bhd divisional engineer Mariana Sylvester. electricity supply Lidam Assan longhouses rural electrification scheme

Over 2,000kg of rubbish collected from clean-up drive in Song District
The volunteers place bagfuls of rubbish at the collection zone during the work party in Song. KAPIT (July 26): A clean-up drive jointly carried out by Kapit District Council (KDC) and Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) on Thursday recorded 2,080kg of rubbish collected across a riverbank section of Sungai Katibas near here. The volunteers included the local residents, representatives of local non-governmental organisations (NGOs), as well as personnel of the KDC and Song District Office, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Civil Defence Force (APM), and People's Volunteers Corps (Rela). The clean-up activity covered the riverbank area along Jalan Mission, between SMK Song to Song Express Terminal. 'I cannot stress more about the importance of maintaining a clean environment that will protect our nature and heritage, and help us achieve balance in development. 'I call upon all of you to practise the good habit of disposing of rubbish inside the proper bins, and to never throw them into the river. 'Maintaining cleanliness is a collective responsibility of all quarters,' said Lidam. He also pointed out that the government had agreed to gazette Sungai Katibas as an 'Empurau Belt', and Song District as a 'Dabai Belt' stretching from Katibas to Ngemah. 'The Ka'tibas River is famous for the highly-prized indigenous freshwater fishes such as 'semah', 'tengadak' and 'empurau', which can fetch prices as high as RM1,000. 'Thus, maintaining a clean environment for our rivers is very important, as progress should not sacrifice nature,' added the assemblyman. Brunei team leaves for regional disaster exercise in Cambodia
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: A six-member team from the Fire and Rescue Department's (FRD) Special Technical Rescue Assistance (Satrea) unit left the country for Phnom Penh, Cambodia to participate in the Asean Regional Disaster Emergency Response Simulation Exercise (Ardex) 2025. Ardex 2025, taking place from July 22 until July 24 is a simulation exercise bringing together emergency response teams from Asean member states to enhance regional cooperation in disaster management. This year's scenario involves simulating a major flood caused by a typhoon, leading to collapsed buildings and damaged roads. The Satrea team will conduct search, rescue and victim management operations in a high-pressure environment. Prior to departure, Acting Director of Fire and Rescue Azmi Hafneh presented the national flag to Commander of Satrea, Senior Superintendent of Fire and Rescue Azizul Rahman Yusop at the Brunei International Airport. Satrea is a specialised search and rescue team established to provide rapid response to complex incidents, including large-scale disasters. Their participation in Ardex 2025 serves as an important platform to test their preparedness, communication, and logistical capabilities in a simulated international disaster scenario. The exercise will also provide an opportunity for the team to gain practical experience and strengthen its technical competency in line with the standards of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group.
