Scots issued warning over 'sophisticated' scams ahead of Amazon Prime Day
Advice Direct Scotland (ADS) said scammers are using artificial intelligence (AI) to create more 'convincing' scams to defraud people out of money.
The consumer advice charity said AI is being used to create realistic phishing emails and automated calls, which could be harder to spot as scams.
Amazon Prime Day runs from July 8 to July 11, and sees deals discounted and offers incentivised for Prime users.
ADS said its staff have handled cases including fake messages about Prime membership renewals, bogus refund offers, and calls claiming Amazon accounts have been hacked.
The warning comes after it revealed that Scots have lost at least £860,000 to cyber criminals in the past year, representing a tenfold surge in online scams.
Scammers often claim shoppers have ordered expensive items such as iPhones and demand personal or banking details to cancel payments.
Fraudsters also try to trick people into downloading software that gives them remote access to devices, exposing bank details.
ADS said Amazon would never call to ask for remote access or to install apps.
If you receive suspicious calls, texts, or emails asking for personal information or payments, the charity says people should not respond.
Hazel Knowles, senior project lead for Advice Direct Scotland, said: 'With households across Scotland still facing huge financial pressures because of the cost of living and energy crises, it is understandable that people will be hunting for genuine Prime Day deals.
'But criminals are also looking for opportunities and now they have AI to help them sound more believable than ever.
'It can be easy to get caught out, especially if a call or email seems urgent and official. But the best advice is to take a moment, trust your instincts, and check before you buy or click.
'Amazon will never ask for remote access to your device or for payment details over the phone or email. If something feels suspicious, it probably is, and our expert team is here to help if you are unsure.
'Anyone who is caught out by a scam or spots a suspected scam should report it using our free ScamWatch tool at www.scamwatch.scot.'

Gangland wake held at Scots restaurant after Lyons hoods gunned down in Spain
A Scots restaurant held the wake for Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan, who were shot dead in a targeted assassination at Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola, Costa Del Sol. A Scots restaurant has hosted the gangland wake for slain hoods Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan, who were gunned down in Spain. Nonnas Kitchen Dullatur in Cumbernauld held the two gangsters ' wake following their funeral yesterday (Friday July 5) at Bishopbriggs Crematorium in the north of Glasgow. An order of service, seen by the Record, read: "Every man dies but not every man lives. " Edward and Ross ' family would like to thank you for your support today and always. Thanks to Gordon for conducting the service and thanks to Margaret Fraser Funeral Directors. "The families would like to invite you to join them at Nonnas Dullatur." Nonnas Kitchen Dullatur and Margaret Fraser Funeral Directors declined to comment. Two silver funeral cars carrying two black coffins arrived at the Bishopbriggs Crematorium for the 3pm service, carrying floral wreaths, which had the words "Son" and "Dad" placed inside. A fleet of Mercedes vehicles carrying loved ones and the closest associates of the pair followed the cortege. A huge crowd, dressed in black and many draped in designer gear, queued to gain entry into the building as they waited for the cortege to arrive. A " guard of honour" was created by a number of male pals of the pair stood together to form two parallel lines at the entrance to the crematorium as women cried and held one another. Over 100 cars were seen at the premises, many of them large, dark SUVs with blacked out windows, as two private security guards in yellow jackets monitored the scene around the perimeter of the car park. The funeral service was filled to capacity and around 100 grieving attendees paid their respects while standing outside in the rain. Lyons godfather Eddie Snr, 67, and the clan's close associate Liam Boyle, Liam Boyle, 44, were both in attendance. Boyle, Lyons and Monaghan were all accused of carrying out a brutal attack outside the Campsie Bar that left three other men severely injured in April 2016 before the case later collapsed. The theme tune from Braveheart was played at the entrance to the crematorium while the Verve's Bittersweet symphony was later payed inside. A eulogy read to mourners said: 'Everyone in this room has been touched by Edward and Ross in some way. Let's remember them - the sons, brothers, husbands, dads cousins and the loyal and trusted friends.' On May 31, Senior mob member Eddie Lyons Jnr and key lieutenant Ross Monaghan were shot dead in front of horrified tourists, who were enjoying a drink after the Champions League final, in a targeted assassination at Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola, Costa Del Sol. Lyons Jnr and his holiday golfing buddies from the Dullatur Golf Club in Cumbernauld later headed to the Irish boozer owned by long-time pal Monaghan when he was shot dead outside after a masked gunman emerged from a car. The assailant stormed the boozer and fired bullets into Monaghan as pub-goers scrambled to flee the scene. Footage shared in the aftermath showed a woman trying to administer CPR to Lyons on the pavement as a panicked pal shouted "save him". CCTV from inside the bar showed Monaghan crawling across the floor in his bid to escape from the gunman inside the bar as blood from a stomach wound poured from his t-shirt. The 43-year-old quickly succumbed to his injuries. Harrowing images later showed Monaghan and Lyons ' bodies covered by white sheets following the fatal attack. The shootings came following the eruption of an explosive gang war in Scotland. The feud was sparked when cronies of Edinburgh cocaine kingpin Mark Richardson ripped off Dubai-based Ross McGill, a former Rangers 'ultras' leader, in a £500k drug deal. Richardson's henchman Michael Heeps orchestrated the transaction that scammed McGill after he was paid in fake notes. McGill retaliated by launching a relentless and violent vendetta of shootings and firebombings led by his sinister Tamo Junto group - dragging anybody associated with Richardson into the feud - including Glasgow's notorious Daniel crime clan. The Lyons gang, who both Monaghan and Lyons were senior members of, have been involved in a long-running feud with the rival Daniel family dating back almost 25 years. Spanish police chiefs investigating the double murder said it was linked to the Lyons and Daniel war. However, this claim has been refuted by Police Scotland, who insist the double deaths are "not linked" to the ongoing gang war on home turf. Michael Terrence Riley, 44, from Liverpool, has since been charged in connection with deaths. He faces an extradition hearing later this year. Around 18 years ago, Eddie Lyons Jnr survived a previous attempt on his life when he was ambushed by Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll in Bellshill, Lanarkshire. Trusted pal Monaghan also brushed with death a number of times throughout the course of his life. He was cleared of the murder of notorious Glasgow hood Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll, who was shot dead in a brutal gangland assassination in Asda Robroyston carpark in 2010. Monaghan was tried for the killing of the Daniels enforcer, but was acquitted in May 2012 after it emerged there was no evidence which placed him at the supermarket at the time of the shooting. Then he fled to Malaga in 2017 after he was shot twice while pushing a child's buggy in a gun attack outside St George's Primary School in the Penilee area of Glasgow. Philips flexi draw air fryer that makes food 'ridiculously crispy' drops from £160 to £90
'This Philips dual basket air fryer has been a total game-changer in our kitchen.' When trying to knock up a family dinner, an essential item to have in the kitchen is an air fryer. Allowing you to cook multiple different foods at once at different temperatures, the stress of family cooking will quickly become a breeze. For those who currently don't have an air fryer, buying your first one can be a daunting task as there are so many different brands and sizes on the market. However, now may be the best time to buy as in the lead up to their Prime Day sale, Amazon has knocked the price off some of their must-have items for the home. In the midst of the early sale, the major online retailer has dropped the price of the Philips Dual Basket Airfryer 1000 Series. Normally priced at £159.99, shoppers can now grab the 7.1L air fryer for £89.99 in a limited time deal. With a massive 7.1L capacity, this Philips air fryer is said to be perfect for families as it can cook multiple dishes at once. Additionally, this device is an ideal option for people who meal prep as its versatile functions will save users both time and effort in the kitchen. Equipped with RapidAir Technology, shoppers will be able to enjoy the taste and texture of fried food guilt free as the air fryer can cook your meals with up to 90 per cent less fat, while still keeping them golden and crispy. On top of this, the air fryer comes with 10 cooking functions that will deliver 'consistent results every time'. This air fryer also comes with the added bonus of being a flexi draw. With a removable divider, users can switch between cooking with two drawers at different temperatures to combining all their food into one huge drawer. And for those who struggle to come up with recipes for dinner or are wanting to try and make something new, shoppers will be able to use the Home ID Recipe App to unlock endless recipe ideas and access the cooking controls. Another air fryer included in Amazon's early Prime Day sale is the Tefal Easy Fry Dual Zone Digital Air Fryer. Dropping from £179.99 down to £99.99, this 8.3L air fryer comes with two different sized drawers (5.2L and 3.1L) and eight automatically programmed cooking functions. Alternatively, Argos currently has a deal on the Ninja Foodi 4-ini-1 7.6L Air Fryer. Normally priced at £150, shoppers can get this cooking appliance for cheaper by adding the code ELEC20 at the checkout - dropping the price down to £120. Back to the Philips Air Fryer, it is currently one of Amazon's top choices and boasts a 4.6 star rating from happy shoppers. Many reviewers praised the device for its cooking results, while one shopper dubbed it a 'game-changer' for the kitchen. One delighted shopper said: "A really great quality air fryer but i would expect nothing less from this brand. The air fryer is a nice size and comes with two drawers, it is really easy to clean. Cooks the food well. Happy with this." With a five-star reviewer also adding: "Since entering the world of the airfryer I have not used my main oven. These devices cook food faster, and certain foods like chips, chicken wings, etc. come out ridiculously crispy. The Philips airfryer is a thing of beauty, it is slightly smaller than my Devology and fits nicely on the countertop next to it." However, a few shoppers grumbled over the fact that the air fryer does not come with a physical instruction manual. One person said: "Could do with a basic information leaflet for beginners explaining symbols." With another customer agreeing: "A word of warning to anyone thinking of buying this item. You have to go online for how to use. I managed to register to get my 2yrs guarantee. Couldn't see the very small writing on my I-phone. When did instruction books go out of fashion." Despite this, one top reviewer commented: "I really like the build quality of this and the display makes it easy to use. The size is ideal for a family. It's good too that you can make one bigger drawer. Fair value for money as it's a quality item." With a sixth shopper praising: "This Philips dual basket air fryer has been a total game-changer in our kitchen. From the moment we unboxed it, the build quality felt premium—sturdy, sleek, and just what you'd expect from Philips. "The 7.1L capacity is surprisingly spacious, and the dual baskets make it so easy to cook different things at the same time. No more waiting around while one batch finishes." Olay's ‘anti-wrinkle' cream that's ‘better than high end brands' has 63% off
Amazon has slashed the price of Olay's anti-ageing moisturiser by 63% in an early Prime Day deal and shoppers say it's 'better than high end brands' Amazon Prime Day is on the horizon, and in the lead up the online retailer has been slashing prices on hundreds of products. And one that caught our attention was the amazing discount on Olay's Regenerist Whip Moisturiser. Originally priced at £38, this hydrating face cream is now £14 - that's a huge 63% discount. Whipped face products have been a popular beauty trend over the past few years, with products like Drunk Elephant's Lala Retro Whipped Cream and Bondi Sands' Daydream Whipped Moisturiser around. So what exactly is a whipped moisturiser? It's a cream that's been whipped up to incorporate air, resulting in an ultra-lightweight, fluffy consistency. And that's exactly the texture of Olay's highly rated moisturiser. This anti-wrinkle cream features 99% pure Niacinamide, which helps to promote skin cell renewal and anti-ageing peptides that are proven to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. On top of this, the cream features SPF 30 making it the ideal base for the summertime. Shoppers can't get enough of this cream praising its non-greasy feel, lightweight texture and hydrating results that feel comparable to luxury brands. One reviewer wrote: 'I have always used various Olay products all my adult life and I'm in my 60s. Have tried other brands but always come back to Olay This particular one is very creamy but sinks into the skin quickly and feels light I apply it in the morning and my skin feels moisturised all day. It has a touch of luxury when using it and lasts well' A second added: 'As an older person I have used Olay products for years (since called Ullay) and found them to be value for money especially with spf. I steered away from spending the extra on this but when my skin was looking sallow and make up didn't sit well I decided to give it a go I was nor expecting miracles (I am almost 70!). I saw a difference after a couple of uses my skin felt tighter and hydrated giving back a dewyness.' The main criticism came from shoppers who think the product is too expensive for the amount you receive. A shopper said: 'Bit pricey considering it is whip, meaning there is slightly less actual product than original.' However, that's why the 63% discount is a great opportunity to try the product out before committing to the full price.
